  • After much listening I think I'm going to go with a Splawn (USA Company) Quick Rod Amp Head.

Has the modded Plexi, Modded JCM800, Modded Plus 800 tone :-) 2 channels.

  • That amplifier really rings true with my ears...good clean tones, and just enough gain. Thinking this one's on the to-get list(at least the head)......does this have onboard reverb?

  • @bowslap It has onboard digital reverb. Some folks don't care for it but it sounds fine to me. Great crunchy tone - the best sounding Marshall I've ever owned except for a '78 Master Volume 100 watt head which sounded about the same.

  • @JesseFSegovia If it stacks up that well against a 2203...then it really MUST be something. BTW, what speakers are in that 412? Curently have a set of greenbacks in my 412....would want to have the speakers pair well with the head( I know some of Marshall's cabinets employ the Celestion 70/80's), and I have to admit from just the video footage that this sounds well-balanced...would love to drag a slide out and see what magic happens!

  • This is the amp Robin Trower uses :-) Can you get the heavier tones with this or would you add a pedal? Good GNR tones? One more?? Clean tones....good bad?? I am just worried because it's a One channel amp.

  • @hawg427 Slash also uses it, as well as Peter Frampton, Jeff Beck and Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi. You can get really heavy tones with just the two preamp knobs but if you're switching back and forth you may want a pedal.

  • So YOU'RE that guy in Guitar Center! :) Kidding, nice playing and tone man.

  • Aaaah I'm getting d zzy

  • u film like my dog

  • @utPr3d4ToR Is your dog available in February? We have a gig coming up and I can never get anyone to tape an entire show.

  • @JesseFSegovia yes, 1750 dollars for hour. :P i need the vintage modern ...

    lol

  • What was the trick that you did at 0:42 to 0:45?

  • @firegeek22 It's just thirds down the neck. The first finger of my left hand is on E, 3rd string, 9th fret, and the middle finger is on A-flat, 5th string, 11th fret. Slide down 2 frets to D, 2 frets to C, 3 frets to A and 2 frets to G. When you play the G the 3rd string is actually open. The reason this works is you muffle the string in between, the 4th string, with your first or middle finger as you fret so you can pick all three strings but only the 3rd and 5th will ring.

  • HE LOOKS LIKE THE GUY WITH THE GOLDEN VOICE THUMBSUP SO OTHER CAN SEE

  • is that the guy from weekend at bernies movie

  • From guitar direct to amp with no Pedal boost????wow

  • Can you play with this (head+4x12cab) in your bedroom?

  • @ozzyfan1995 Yes, it's got a master volume and it works very well. Very big, bottomy tone even at bedroom volumes.

  • I know the amp is the focus here, and it is great, but what about the guitar, what is that (Gibson LP, obviously, but), an R8? It's gorgeous.

  • @Nikola85ZgCRO Yep, as I recall it's the R8 plain top. I always wanted a '59 RI but this one was really nice, too. Although after my '89 three pickup ebony Les Paul Custom was stolen and I could've bought any new Les Paul to replace it, I ended up with another three pickup ebony Les Paul Custom! :)

  • @jessesegovia :O my worst nightmare, having my Les Paul stolen. That's a nice guitar aswell, the 3pu Custom. I have to say, I'd rather have a plain top '58 reissue than a '59... I really like the plain tops... :)

  • I'd like to have one especially for this kind of vintage tones.

  • Marshall discontinued this excellent amp (bcos they're crazy, I guess) in favor of their new solid state line. Hendrix pukes in his grave...

  • @gwugluud

Complete misinformation, the VM has not been discontinued.

  • @Bieling3 Well, it would seem that every online music store (Musician's Friend, Zzounds, Guitar Center, etc, etc) on the internet all disagree with you.

  • @gwugluud

??? It's available at all those sites.

  • which box did you use??

  • Never give your girlfriend the camera. Crotch shot at 1:02

  • @giffy5775 Uh. That's his daughter...

  • I want to go to lefty land

  • @cast390 Ha, you noticed! Yes, everything is backwards in left-land. That's why I sound like a decent guitarist in this clip. :)

  • doesnt slash use the 2266?

  • yeah i'm pretty sure he used it to record libertad

  • @djdavidtee nah he uses the 2466

  • would this amp be good for hard rock like guns n roses metallica, megadeth, led zeppelin, and steve vai?

  • @joshua0226 With the right guitar this amp would be absolutely perfect for Guns'n'Roses & Led Zeppelin. Slash uses one as well as Beck, Frampton, Trower, Sambora and other notable classic rockers. I don't do any Metallica or Megadeth so I can't say anything about that, and Vai gets so many different guitar tones it's hard to say.

You'll have to try one out yourself but it's an awesome amp!

  • @joshua0226

I'd say that you could play early Metallica and Megadeth on this one. Their later stuff might get a little difficult, although you might catch the sound with the right pick-ups and maybe a pedal.

For Led Zep and G n' R this amp is quite good.

But you want to play some super-high gain stuff, I won't recommend this amp.

Anyway, try it, with a guitar similar to yours, or even your own and see if you digg the tone.

  • @joshua0226 you can do pretty much anything with this amp, its so versitle, i play loads of metallica and machine head etc with one of these and its the tits, and im sure with a lil work with the settings you could get a sweet tone for some steve vai. if you wanna see how it works with metal check out my vids

  • Sounds like ZZ Top to me haha.

  • It would be perfect. And if you wanted a lil gain boost, use a boss super overdrive.

  • @lastangelsofrock

Sure, depending on your guitar and your playing style of course. It's a very flexible amp but for me it shines on that Plexi-like overdriven tone.

    Jesse

  • and for Metal?

  • your better off with one of jcm series

  • lol @ Ashley @ 1:09. ;^). So cute!

  • I got the 50 watt head and love it,though the the pre-amp stage crapped out due to a bad resister after only playing through it about a dozen times.

  • did u crank it

  • i love my VM. i have the 2266 50W Version.

i got mine last year for about $600. they're going for $1,499.99 now. SCORE!

  • NICE. Lucky man. How did you get it for that cheap?

  • That is a score!!!

  • i have this amp and i love it, though it broke down one time, about half a year after i baugt it, i have it back now, the power on led is dead, but i dont care, the sound is amazing, even on my home-made stack wich consists of 2 cabs each with 2 12" speakers of brand X

  • I'm guessing you probably didn't have the volume high enough, they need to be really turned up to get the bass working

  • The first time I tried out the VM I hated it. Then I went back to the store when I had a lot of time (and a patient salesman who left me alone for a while) and after working with it for a while I realized this was MY amp. It takes time, it's not as easy as it might be with the JVM or other amps to dial in a great sound but I find that a good starting place is with knobs (except Master Volume of course) at 12:00 o'clock. Give it some time - you might be surprised.

  • yeah dude, i just went in one day and played that thing for three hours straight.

i picked up the head and a marshall quad for 2700AU...is that cheap? haha how much was yours?

  • that thing is all tube right?

  • Yes, as much as any all-tube Marshall amp. I don't think Marshall has used a tube rectifier in a long time although I think Mesa still does for the most part.

    Check it out!

  • @jessesegovia a tube rectifier is used by Marshall today in their JTM 45 reissue heads

  • I NEED THIS AMP! :D

  • Oh, and add Joe Bonamassa to that list - he also uses the Vintage Modern.

  • its funny, i have a shitty squire strat atm and it makes this amp sound crap. but yesterday i plugged in my rythm guitarists fender strat and played ohio by crosby stils nash n young and the tone was exactly the same

  • You just need to play with the controls, the two preamp controls especially and all the EQ controls to get the sound you want. Jeff Beck, Slash, Yngwie Malmsteen, Doug Aldrich, etc., use this amp and even though they all sound very different from one another, I think they all sound great.

  • very nice

  • It's very easy - you just do pull offs with your left hand down by the nut and then very lightly run the edge of your right hand down the neck brushing against the strings. It's sort of like doing movable harmonics but against your pull-off notes instead of just the open strings.

  • I have a JCM900 at the moment but i want one of these

  • I just bought this amp (AND A GIBSON SG!!) but i only have the sg, the amp is coming on monday!!

  • i got this amp a few months ago and its great

  • Nice!

  • I played the modern I love its organic overdrive tones reminds me of a crank modded plexi but mix with the bluesbreaker =) I have a Jcm 800 2203 reissue I stereo em both now =)

  • They sound MUCH better in person! I love this thing so much I drag it with me where ever I go. I refuse to play through anything else. I bought the Fulltone OCD thinking I could keep the VM on Low range with a clean tone and control my overdrive tone with the pedal, but the pedal sound couldn't compare with the amp's natural overdriven tone on High range so I returned the OCD. The amp stays on High and I clean up my tone by turning down my guitar's volume control.

  • Nice sound! Now I want one. And the guitar.

(And the chops too). That would be nice...

    Bill Blaze

  • Sooooo. Did you buy it????

  • I didn't buy that one - it was a beat up floor demo and the price was still pretty high but I did get one about a week later at an amazing price on ebay. It's mine!!! :)

  • rockon saw this on marshall forum...definitely great talent!!!!!
