That amplifier really rings true with my ears...good clean tones, and just enough gain. Thinking this one's on the to-get list(at least the head)......does this have onboard reverb?
@bowslap It has onboard digital reverb. Some folks don't care for it but it sounds fine to me. Great crunchy tone - the best sounding Marshall I've ever owned except for a '78 Master Volume 100 watt head which sounded about the same.
@JesseFSegovia If it stacks up that well against a 2203...then it really MUST be something. BTW, what speakers are in that 412? Curently have a set of greenbacks in my 412....would want to have the speakers pair well with the head( I know some of Marshall's cabinets employ the Celestion 70/80's), and I have to admit from just the video footage that this sounds well-balanced...would love to drag a slide out and see what magic happens!
This is the amp Robin Trower uses :-) Can you get the heavier tones with this or would you add a pedal? Good GNR tones? One more?? Clean tones....good bad?? I am just worried because it's a One channel amp.
@hawg427 Slash also uses it, as well as Peter Frampton, Jeff Beck and Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi. You can get really heavy tones with just the two preamp knobs but if you're switching back and forth you may want a pedal.
@firegeek22 It's just thirds down the neck. The first finger of my left hand is on E, 3rd string, 9th fret, and the middle finger is on A-flat, 5th string, 11th fret. Slide down 2 frets to D, 2 frets to C, 3 frets to A and 2 frets to G. When you play the G the 3rd string is actually open. The reason this works is you muffle the string in between, the 4th string, with your first or middle finger as you fret so you can pick all three strings but only the 3rd and 5th will ring.
@Nikola85ZgCRO Yep, as I recall it's the R8 plain top. I always wanted a '59 RI but this one was really nice, too. Although after my '89 three pickup ebony Les Paul Custom was stolen and I could've bought any new Les Paul to replace it, I ended up with another three pickup ebony Les Paul Custom! :)
@jessesegovia :O my worst nightmare, having my Les Paul stolen. That's a nice guitar aswell, the 3pu Custom. I have to say, I'd rather have a plain top '58 reissue than a '59... I really like the plain tops... :)
@Bieling3 Well, it would seem that every online music store (Musician's Friend, Zzounds, Guitar Center, etc, etc) on the internet all disagree with you.
@joshua0226 With the right guitar this amp would be absolutely perfect for Guns'n'Roses & Led Zeppelin. Slash uses one as well as Beck, Frampton, Trower, Sambora and other notable classic rockers. I don't do any Metallica or Megadeth so I can't say anything about that, and Vai gets so many different guitar tones it's hard to say.
You'll have to try one out yourself but it's an awesome amp!
I'd say that you could play early Metallica and Megadeth on this one. Their later stuff might get a little difficult, although you might catch the sound with the right pick-ups and maybe a pedal.
For Led Zep and G n' R this amp is quite good.
But you want to play some super-high gain stuff, I won't recommend this amp.
Anyway, try it, with a guitar similar to yours, or even your own and see if you digg the tone.
@joshua0226 you can do pretty much anything with this amp, its so versitle, i play loads of metallica and machine head etc with one of these and its the tits, and im sure with a lil work with the settings you could get a sweet tone for some steve vai. if you wanna see how it works with metal check out my vids
i have this amp and i love it, though it broke down one time, about half a year after i baugt it, i have it back now, the power on led is dead, but i dont care, the sound is amazing, even on my home-made stack wich consists of 2 cabs each with 2 12" speakers of brand X
The first time I tried out the VM I hated it. Then I went back to the store when I had a lot of time (and a patient salesman who left me alone for a while) and after working with it for a while I realized this was MY amp. It takes time, it's not as easy as it might be with the JVM or other amps to dial in a great sound but I find that a good starting place is with knobs (except Master Volume of course) at 12:00 o'clock. Give it some time - you might be surprised.
Yes, as much as any all-tube Marshall amp. I don't think Marshall has used a tube rectifier in a long time although I think Mesa still does for the most part.
its funny, i have a shitty squire strat atm and it makes this amp sound crap. but yesterday i plugged in my rythm guitarists fender strat and played ohio by crosby stils nash n young and the tone was exactly the same
You just need to play with the controls, the two preamp controls especially and all the EQ controls to get the sound you want. Jeff Beck, Slash, Yngwie Malmsteen, Doug Aldrich, etc., use this amp and even though they all sound very different from one another, I think they all sound great.
It's very easy - you just do pull offs with your left hand down by the nut and then very lightly run the edge of your right hand down the neck brushing against the strings. It's sort of like doing movable harmonics but against your pull-off notes instead of just the open strings.
I played the modern I love its organic overdrive tones reminds me of a crank modded plexi but mix with the bluesbreaker =) I have a Jcm 800 2203 reissue I stereo em both now =)
They sound MUCH better in person! I love this thing so much I drag it with me where ever I go. I refuse to play through anything else. I bought the Fulltone OCD thinking I could keep the VM on Low range with a clean tone and control my overdrive tone with the pedal, but the pedal sound couldn't compare with the amp's natural overdriven tone on High range so I returned the OCD. The amp stays on High and I clean up my tone by turning down my guitar's volume control.
I didn't buy that one - it was a beat up floor demo and the price was still pretty high but I did get one about a week later at an amazing price on ebay. It's mine!!! :)
After much listening I think I'm going to go with a Splawn (USA Company) Quick Rod Amp Head.
Has the modded Plexi, Modded JCM800, Modded Plus 800 tone :-) 2 channels.

Sure, depending on your guitar and your playing style of course. It's a very flexible amp but for me it shines on that Plexi-like overdriven tone.
