Having no back story doesn't make something pointless. This to me is an example of a scene to show what kind of style of film the creator would make if they had the time and money. It's also good practice. I liked it.

Nice work. Regarding backstory...it's the story of the film maker. In that sense, it's not pointless, and I appreciate the expression.
Backstory is not necessary, and in any even not really relevant. I'd look at this piece as more of a moving snapshot.
