Father and I (He a Ret. Col, USAF) went to the Salinas, CA airshow a few months back. One of the planes he flew was the Globemaster II, or C-124 before transitioning to the C-141. A bit sad was dad when the 141's became ingots but when we got to the airshow and saw the C-17 do it's thing, my fathers sadness over the loss of the 141's seemed to diminish. What a grin he had on his face. I'll never forget it...
@yaya52 They use it as a recruitment tool, comes out of that budget. With so many unemployed it is a waste of money when people are lining at the door to join. Soon they will be cutting thousands of jobs making it that much harder. Airshows are not important to national security.
This, friends, is a kick ass airplane, it may not be as heavy a hauler as other transports, but they can't do what this bird can do! Very impressive! Less than 1500 feet to get 'er up, and less than 1000 feet to get 'er down.

/watch?v=VH-KDGRwwck - Russian documentary about NATO transport aviation with English subs. Including C-17 Globemaster III, C-141 Starlifter, C-5 Galaxy.
Wrong, In the mid-1970s, wing cracks were found throughout the fleet. Consequently, all C-5A aircraft were restricted to a maximum of 50,000 pounds (22,680kg) of cargo each. To increase their lifting capability and service life, 77 C-5As underwent a re-winging program from 1981 to 1987.
Using DOD's million ton-mile per day planning factors, calculated that DOD would need to fully modernize 7 C-5s ($132 million each) to attain the equivalent capability achieved from acquiring 1 additional C-17 ($276 million each), that is over 3 times more.
By the time you get one C-5 into the air, you would have (5) C-17s already in the air; this would put the aircraft at risk in the hot spots being on the ground for such a long time.
they did the same start, but they did alot of flybys, but the best part is that they used it for a combat demo, it came in and dropped like 4 crates. pretty cool.
Was involved with the flight test program for the C-17 EDW AFB. You should see this thing drop it's paylod at 50ft off the ground. Only takes a crew of 3. To bad the progam is ending.
Much quieter inside than a C-130 or C-141 - it even has a restroom. And you ain't flown until you've made a combat approach into Baghdad in a C-17. A great plane!
Yeah, one hell of a beast...BUT...can it be landed on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier like it`s smaller cousin the C 130...AND...I wonder what Boeing are gunna come with when the A400M comes into service..Checkout the C 17 rebuild on here too
lol. I had one of these fly over my house at 2 am. And it's lights weren't on... I guess if was some stealth practice, idk. Anyways... I just saw this giant black triangle in the sky right over my house... and it was really loud, contrary to what this video says, and low. I cried a bit 'cause I'm paranoid as hell. haha
I had something similar happen to me shortly after 9/11. I was sitting at my computer at about 2 am and I heard this incredibly loud noise, so I step outside, and I see the back of an F-15. Needless to say, I was giggling like a school girl, I was in awe. I will never forget that sound.
YES THERE WELL OVER THE TOP,.............but they make me laugh, and i think there good at being commentators,..........so i say WELL DONE ps that c17 is awesome
Keep in mind too that, assuming the trooper was clocking the plane from the announcer stand, there would have been a pretty substantial cosine error, which results in an artificially low readout. So they might well have read 83 mph off the radar gun, but that doesn't mean that was the correct groundspeed.
wow that guy has his facts wrong. 170ft by 170ft roughly. Not even close to a football field. Even a C-5 Galaxy comes up short. In my 6 years stationed at McChord I always thought I would do much better than the "supposed" professional airshow callers. This guy needs to quit.
ha ha...yeah I was thinking the exact same thing(about the "football field" claim)...I was just about to write something but then I scrolled down & saw your comment...I'm kind of an airshow enthusiast, over the years I've heard some dumb claims from the announcers like: "the AV-8B Harrier can cruise @ a top speed of Mach 1.5..." and "the F-15 is the worlds only carrier launched supersonic fighter..."(yeah THAT one was really bad), along with many others. Airshow announcers suck
those engines are amazing but the aircraft is empty taking off at full thrust, and u should see a ge-90-115b, about 112,000lbs of thrust from 1 engine
Actually during a triple red-line test that very engine produced 127,900lbs of thrust!! Imagine if they put just two of those things on that aircraft...
i'm from the UK...i only know British commentators...although...i have to admit...the American commentators have so much more enthusiasm...but maybe a bit too much for me...i mean...1:01 'OH MY GAWD TAKE A LOOK AT THAT!' but again...my opinion

Their Air rediness is half that of the C-17, it would take (2) C-5's to match the air-rediness of just (1) C-17.
Not to mention they cant land on un-improved landing strips, how cares if they carry more and cant land?
I have talked to Air Force pilots and they happen to love that plane.
Not to mention it can back up under its own power, the C-5 cant say that....lol
