Father and I (He a Ret. Col, USAF) went to the Salinas, CA airshow a few months back. One of the planes he flew was the Globemaster II, or C-124 before transitioning to the C-141. A bit sad was dad when the 141's became ingots but when we got to the airshow and saw the C-17 do it's thing, my fathers sadness over the loss of the 141's seemed to diminish. What a grin he had on his face. I'll never forget it...

This, friends, is a kick ass airplane, it may not be as heavy a hauler as other transports, but they can't do what this bird can do! Very impressive! Less than 1500 feet to get 'er up, and less than 1000 feet to get 'er down.

Was involved with the flight test program for the C-17 EDW AFB. You should see this thing drop it's paylod at 50ft off the ground. Only takes a crew of 3. To bad the progam is ending.

Keep in mind too that, assuming the trooper was clocking the plane from the announcer stand, there would have been a pretty substantial cosine error, which results in an artificially low readout. So they might well have read 83 mph off the radar gun, but that doesn't mean that was the correct groundspeed.

those engines are amazing but the aircraft is empty taking off at full thrust, and u should see a ge-90-115b, about 112,000lbs of thrust from 1 engine
