To me the movie it's plain shit, as is the manga version (for 1ce!). Insead, the anime it's sooooo deep, I think , well, at least most of my friends overlooked it. But to me it took me years till somebody pointed out the real meaning.... and thus it became my fave anime series ever.

I definitely understood it that Anthy does finally manage to break free of the cycle and "grow up" out of this confined world, and her search symbolically means she's catching up to Utena. Utena didn't necessarily "die", but she found her own nirvana out of this messed up reincarnation process Ohtori trapped them in. I think she definitely does find Utena (and I think Ikuhara definitely did imply that), in a sense that she does reach her goal of breaking free.

The movie is good, definitely worth seeing if you're a fan, but I found it a little disappointing. They tried to include the amazing symbolism, and succeeded a little bit, but it was very clumsy and hardly had any of the flair the series had.

Utena didn't die. She just get out of Akio(male-chauvinist)'s world. Maybe hurt and traumatized by the swords(attack from the collective spirit of the conventional society), but she certainly broghut the revoltion to Anthy. Now Anthy restored her self confidence and surely find and wounded Utena in the new world.

2. The castle in the sky is a metaphore for it being a "twisted fairytale" because Akio never regained his powers and Anthy was a witch

A lot of people misunderstood or were confused about the series and movie relationship. The T.V series is not as confusing but the Movie tends to myth people, but over all the movie is a "Re- telling" of the series. It's just done VERY differently. I know its hard to believe but it is after several times watching and doing an analysis of both the movie and the T.V series =D The movies pretty deep

Watch the movie. It's a good companion to it. Anthy said that Utena's not really dead, she's just no longer in Akio's world. So maybe, when she died, she was able to fully walk into the real world. Which makes sense, since Anthy is shown falling when Utena died. So maybe, they both died, and were able to be reborn.

Its pretty much up to personal interpretation I guess. My belief is that since the school theyre at can be considered a prison for tormented souls, Anthy finally crossing the school borders in the first shot of the vid represents her finally breaking free of her self-imposed coffin. Something Utena helped her do by giving her a glimpse of the world when she opened the coffin in the last episode. Instead of making me sad, this ending now makes me very happy :) Shes finally free!

Actually it was never flat out confirmed what race Anthy was but it's been assumed as well as hinted that she could be possibly be a South Asian (think Southeast) Indian. Most of the characters in Utena also don't have any set religious values either.
