@kuran97 you may have a gifted of learning erhu. That's what I suffer from learning erhu.I think lots of people including some performer can't control their pitch especially play violin piece by erhu.
Why people only could appreciate western music? Chinese music is beautiful, but many people could not appreciate it. May be they judge Chinese culture using political view (you know that many peoples around this world hate communism) . I think that is NOT FAIR.
@BlueMoonLightDreams meh you can produce more sounds with the erhu i think and the erhu is more unique than the violin.. i wish i learned erhu rather than violin lol
@SpoonyInfidel i am not going to be cynical about how it sounds, it sounds good, but it just is not right, that instrument is a historical piece of china, and to play classical (which i like also) with it feels wrong, even an insult to culture, its like having a chinese restaurant and serving american food.
@BlueMoonLightDreams yeah i know what your saying but mabye she wanted to create a name for herself? playing western music on a classical chinese ehru.. you dont see that very often.. if at all lol
@SpoonyInfidel yeah, because it does not look right :D but anyway, i hope she understand what she is doing unless she is creating a bad name for herself.
@BlueMoonLightDreams Thats a narrow way to think of it. Think of the larger picture. Think of it as an international affair. The two cultures coming together, in a skillfully played beautiful song. It resembles international peace and understanding of art and culture. We should preserve our cultures and share them as well because that's how cultures originally developed anyway and hopefully will continue to do so.
@BlueMoonLightDreams I have an opinion much the same as yours. I promised myself once I learn how to play the erhu well, I would not play western classical music. I would create my own songs which would be oriental in theme and not really classical in the western sense and play Chinese folk music.
In American slang, 'sick' and 'fuck' are a compliment in this context. It's a strange thing with language, I'm sure this is confusing to a lot of viewers.
From the non-musical, non-musician point of view: this is at once impressive and reminds one of the other parallel between this instrument and the "fiddle." This instrument does "credible" bluegrass tunes as well as classical music.
Proving, I suppose, that music is truly cross-cultural.
I really think it is about the same difficulty. In fact I believe all instruments are just as hard to "master", but some are just harder to initially learn!
Great performance though the tuning could have been better. Sarasate's Fantasy is more suitable for violins; if you've heard it before on a violin you'll know what I mean. It makes full use of the violin's register, which is of course wider than the erhu's, and pizzicato as well. I would imagine the erhu's timbre being well suited for the slower parts of the Fantasy though.
yes only the lightest touch is required to get a note, there is nor fretboard, so too hard and the pitch will bend. really hard to play this, shes brialliant
it's not really as hard as you think it is. the strings have quite a high level of tension, so it is actually quite difficult to push the string to the point that the pitch will bend.
but not too light though.. you hav to knw exactly how much pressure is needed to play. if not, it will affect th sound played. th amt of pressure you hav to exert depends on your erhu and th distance btwn th strings and th body of th erhu.
I wonder what Bizet would have thought if he ever saw this- years ago would he have even dared to imagine such a foreign instrument playing this wonderful piece? :D Well done!
Wow! This has to be one of the moxst difficult instruments to play, next to the theremin. I noticed the fingers just touch the strings, but like a slide steel, they don't press the strings on to a fingerboard. Amazing!
I don't mean to make light of an incredible performance, but i was waiting to see smoke. The Erhu reminds me of using a bow and two sticks to start a fire.
the sound which she played was so clearly, and the way we playing erhu is very different from violin, viola, or cello, of course double bass, i can play both viola and erhu so i know how much different it is.
there're only 2 strings on an erhu to support your fingers, unlike violin which has a finger board to support the weight and power of fingers; and your right hand must move "between" the 2 strings because the bow's hair is actually between them! her hand is amazing!!
i've only just discovered the amazing sounds of the erhu and i've only ever heard it played slowly and its beautiful. this is amazing! it's fiddlin'! but cooler than a fiddle. i wish i could play erhu. jeez. this woman is fantasitc!
Old men in Chinatown try to play the Erhu but they are so bad at it... when I see them performing in public while tourists walk by, it makes me angry because they are giving people a bad impression of the Erhu.
She's good but I wonder though, when she moves her hand in a circular motion in the fast parts affect how the music comes out. I read that the movement of their wrist and the pressure on the strings are vital when playing an erhu O:
yeah i know hehehe i jsut think its funny. Whenever i play guitar concentrated, i tend to push my face forward and when I play trombone, I subconciously bob my head to the beat lol. What if this woman doesn't realize her head is going all crazy?
Kinda like how pianist tend to bang their head on upbeat songs xD I don't do that since I like playing sad and slow song but moving with the music is natural I guess :'D
