I believe Andreas' soloing peaked at Beneath The Remains, while on Arise long elaborated solos are hardly heard, but Sepultura' s songwriting as a whole (composition, technique) peaked at Arise, as well as Igor' s drumming (clearly because they slowed down in Chaos A.D.). Then Max lyrics peaked at Chaos A.D. were intelligent and powerfull messages are heard

This was their first thrash album then they peaked (imo) with Beneath the Remains but Arise is a definitely a top thrash album too. So 3.

After that they changed their sound a lot for Chaos AD but it's a great album too. After that you've got Roots which is where things start to get less interesting.

Well actually Metallica are one of the reasons why Sepultura even played thrash metal!

If you listen to Morbid Visions followed by Schizophrenia you might notice a big difference. Andreas joined the band in 86 or so and brought with him influence from some of the bands he listened to - Metallica and Slayer, changing the sound of the next album.

@allyharp actually it wasnt necessarily that andreas brought influences when he joined because Max was already listening to metallica and slayer and iron maiden ... what happened is that max consitraights on vocal and riffs so he needed some one with superior guitar knowledge to push the band forward so andreas was a perfect fit for sepultura
