@72seeker72 Can't argue with that, Penn State was shoved around all day in that game. And that was a phenomenal Penn State team. But IMO the 1996 Buckeyes were the second best Big Ten team of the 1990s, just a bit ahead of 1997 Michigan and right behind 1994 Penn State. Only difference is, the 1996 Bucks didn't have the luck that 1994 PSU and 1997 UM had, luck is a big part of staying undefeated. But I still maintain to this day that the 1997 Rose Bowl was the REAL national championship game.
Also the 1994 team scored so fast that the backups were on the field by halftime usually. So Penn State would take a 35-7 lead into halftime then end up winning by scores like 59-31.
What sucks was the game against Indiana in 1994, and those cock sucking Hoosiers celebrated like they won the game. 1994 PENN STATE / 2008 OKLAHOMA the funnest scoring teams i've ever watched.
What really sucked is that Penn State was up 28-7 before the backups started to be subbed in and 35-14 when all the backups came in, and they scored against scrubs with 1:48 left and then scored a Hail Mary and 2 point conversion on the final play of the game. I wish Penn State would have kept the score looking like the epic pounding that it really was. People forget just how good the starting defense was. What really was bad was the drop to #2 and never being given the chance to recover.
Now here is a another baffling thing, there is literally 1 youtube highlight of the 1994 team when they had the clutch drive against the ILLINI. I mean there has got to be a penn state die hard who will put out highlights of years past. The other thing that sucked about 1994 was the media spoon fed Tom Osborne the national championship, for the criteria of its time it was a split between the two.
Very true, Penn State had already fallen in the polls after a not-as-close-as-the-score 63-14 pasting of an Ohio State that finished #9 in the nation and was #22 at the time, while Nebraska beat a good but slightly overrated Colorado team that was about equal with Michigan that year. Nebraska gets rewarded for squeaking by the then #3 Hurricanes but Penn State gets ignored for pounding the then #6 Ducks who had a smothering "Gang Green" defense.
I'm confused too. This 1996 Buckeyes team was IMO the second best Big 10 team of the 90s. Taking a Fiesta Bowl winning Penn State to the woodshed is no small potatoes. I don't see this happening this year, though. Today's Buckeye team isn't nearly as good as the 1996 one, and that Penn State team playing today looks like a combo of the 1994 offense and 1986 defense.
Yeah Penn State is just nasty at this point . I could not believe they demolished Wisconsin like that, I was expecting as usual to lose in Madison,WI. What was your Best Big 10 team of the 1990's. I gotta go with #1 PENN STATE 1994, #2 (TIE) MICHIGAN 1997 #2 (TIE) OHIO STATE 1996, #4 OHIO STATE 1998, #5 WISCONSIN 1999 (considering they had a flat start 2-2 I believe, they saddled up and played some good football rest of the season.
1. 1994 Penn State 2. 1996 Ohio State 3. 1997 Michigan 4. 1998 Ohio State 5. 1995 Northwestern 6. 1995 Ohio State 7. 1999 Wisconsin 8. 1993 Ohio State 9. 1996 Penn State 10. 1993 Penn State 11. 1997 Ohio State 12. 1998 Michigan 13. 1997 Penn State 14. 1996 Northwestern 15. 1994 Ohio State
I would go with the 1999 MICHIGAN and 1999 MICHIGAN STATE team over that 94' OSU team. I just remember in the 1990's was the Michigan State was the most unpredictable team and I always told people never ever bet on them or bet against them, you would never know what team showed up.
I would go with the 1999 MICHIGAN and 1999 MICHIGAN STATE team over that 94' OSU team. I just remember in the 1990's was the Michigan State was the most unpredictable team and I always told people never ever bet on them or bet against them, you would never know what team showed up.
Good point, but I think 1994 OSU was still a good team because of the way that they manhandled most of their opponents, despite the fact that Penn State blew them out like a Division I-AA team (1994 Penn State blew out EVERYONE like a Division I-AA team, LOL).
This is a very good listing. Very accurate and I can tell a lot of thought went into. Hard to believe that Michigan 97 was their only great team of the decade as many times as they beat us in the big game that decade. Some of those losses, especially 95 and 96 still sting.
If Ohio State had been able to beat Michigan State in 1998, that team may have ended up the best Ohio State team of all time. But I think it's amazing that John Cooper really had some great teams but they'd always lose one or two big games (1995 and 1996 to Michigan, 1997 to Penn State and Michigan, 1998 to Michigan State). But the most impressive victory by far for the 1996 team was how they handed a great Penn State team their asses.
These rankings are terrible. How can you have the 1998 Michigan team on this list and not the 1999 team. The 1999 team was WAY better and should be ranked above even the 1999 Wisconsin team - they ended with the same record, but Michigan beat them. Also, how can you rank the 1996 OSU team that had one loss (to Michigan, btw) and didn't win a National Championship over the 1997 Michigan team? I'll give you PSU 94 over UM 97, but not the 96 Buckeyes.
You're right, the 1999 Michigan team was great, but for some reason I forgot about them, I'd put them them around 10 on my list. My reasoning for ranking the 1996 Ohio State team so high is how they won most of their games by insane scores (not shootouts either, mega blowout-shutouts) that 1997 Michigan had few of, but as I said, 2 and 3 on my list are very close and could easily be flipped. Another team worth mentioning is the 1991 Michigan Wolverines, a mostly feast or famine team.
That's true, the 1996 Buckeyes were likely the second best Big Ten team of the 90s, only surpassed by the 1994 Nittany Lions. Even the 1997 Buckeyes were pretty good, about equal with the 1997 Penn State team. Penn State was pretty good in 1997, but that squeaker against Minnesota temporarily killed their mojo, until they played PISSED OFF after getting embarrassed by Michigan. And then that loss to Michigan State happened. And then Joe Juvicius and Curtis Enis were suspended for the bowl game.
no michigan of 97 was the best big ten football team. the 94 nitney lions didn't win a championship, and the 97 michgan team had returning players from 96 that beat the 96 buckeyes.
Being champions has always been mroe about politics than anything else. Penn State in 1994 was robbed by Nebraska. At least you guys got to share co-champions with them (probably because they corrected a mistake they made in 1994). The 1996 Buckeyes are a really underrated team, blowing out top-10 Penn State (who blew out Northwestern). 1997 Michigan's best wins were over Washington State, Ohio State, and Penn State (both OSU and PSU were B10 #2 that year). But 97 UM was a good team though.
well whatever suits you. they were the only team to win a championship or part of a championship in the 90's. therefore they were the best team in the 90's. on another note, they were regarded by fans and the press and everyone other than the coaches as the National Champions that year. and they were the team who had the sports illustrated championship video made that year.
If you want to put the 1997 Wolverines ahead of the 1996 Buckeyes, I won't argue with you, but I thought the 96 Buckeyes were just amazing, especially considering all the teams they beat, including a team that finished #7. But you could say 1997 Michigan's thumping 34-8 of Penn State on the road of a team that was the Big Ten #2 was more impressive. They were very close to equal teams. But I feel the best B10 team of the 90s overall was the 94 Penn State squad. But the 97 UM was impressive.
