In this video she has on SMB's on the front and back legs. Bells on the front. I always have all 4 legs wrapped with polos, splint boots, Professional Choice SMBII, Elites, or SMB3, Classic Equine Legacys, always bell boots on the front. And the rear legs always have the above boots named or skid boots. If your going to protect the front legs, why not protect the hind legs too? I always protect the front and hind legs for a race.

Thank you and good luck with your mare. Currently I don't have a finished barrel horse anymore, Ginger tore a tendon playing in the pasture after it rained and she slipped on the wet grass. She is no longer able to do barrels. now all I have are young horses to train. Could sell some 2 get a finished or already started horse on the pattern, but I'm to attached to the horses that I have. So will stick with them and wait for them to grow/mature & train/compete on them when they are ready.
Thats really neat! I have lots of horse barrel racing friends in that area. I love the LoneStar Expot arena, its awesome. Best of luck training your mare! Maybe we will meed one day at a barrel race somewhere. I love doing the WBA (World Barrel Racing) races. They are so much fun! you compete for saddles, a convertible sports care. And at the finals, a saddle and a big Dodge truck that is decked out on the outside with lots of cool graphics, and your surely get noticed driving one of those!

Lets see you taking full turns at a full gallop. Nor is she "kicking the shit" out of her horse. At all. She said that stopping the cues (kicking) signals him to slow down. That's not exactly the goal in this sport. Srry.
My other horses all need lots of training. I have a 7yo paint mare thats trotting the pattern and an 11yo paint thats slow loping the pattern. Then I have a unbroke 5yo, 4yo, 2 3yo, and 3 2yos. So I have a lot of prospects. But going to be a long time before any are ready to run.
I'm hoping if Ginger is cleared to run barrels again by the vet, that we will be able to make a few barrel races next year. I haven't barrel raced since 2006, I became ill, which ended with me having a double lung transplant, heart surgery, and repair of my bronchial tube defect. And many surgeries after that. So I'm really excited to get back in the saddle and return to the barrel racing! Ginger is my only finished barrel horse, so waiting on her to heal.
Unfortunately Ginger sustained a injury in February 2008. While playing in the pasture she blew her back right tendon. So she is sidelined. She is healing rather well and we hope she will be back to running barrels next year if the vet says its okay. I would never do anything to hurt her. This mare is like my kid. No matter if she can run barrels again or not, she has a forever home with me. I could never part with her.

I see what you are saying - I ride english and western, and although I say english (jumping) is harder, making those tight turns in barrel racing takes an EXTREME amount of skill - not only to make the turn but to stay on as well!
I ride western and english.... And barrel racing is anything but sloppy. You have to know the exact place to start your turn around the barrel and sometimes that is not easy to find, especially when the barrel is placed in a tight corner or something. Its like jumping, you have to have the right natural and artificial tools to do it.
barrel racing is NOTHING like english! when a horse in barrel racing comes up to a barrel they r going usally FULL speed and then they have to turn sharp...english, all u r doing is cantering!
Actually, in some events, like show jumping, ur going as fast as possible to try and make the time allowed as well as a clean round. All i was trying to say is that you have to know what ur doing and how u r going to do it.

i think it is a personal choice if you want to wear a helmet or not. i mean, i wear a helmet and i jumped for six years and still wear one and started barrel racing. there's nothing wrong with it, it's just a choice. it doesn't make you a sissy you are just being prepared in case of a fall. if you don't want to wear a helmet then that's fine. either way horses are AWESOME!GODBLESS

Personally I would rather ride a horse around some barrels as fast as i can then jump shit and hope my horse doesnt refuse. Barrel racing takes a shit load of practice to make the horse do it right. Western riders can get back up on their horses after falling off. So can english riders. I ride english, and I'm not afraid of falling off. Alot of experienced riders aren't. So we don't need to start a war on how "Western riders are better because..." or "English riders are better because...". Both types of riding are very fun and both types of riders are very brave and aren't afraid of falling off.
And the only reason themagnificent wont ever barrel race is because she is too much of a wuss and has no guts. I think she is jealous of all the cowgirls out there who have courage. It's our choice to wear a cowboy hat instead of a helment.
Ummmm, the only reason we western riders don't wear helments is because we are called, cow/boys/girls. Which means we get back on our horses again unlike those sissy English riders who worry about falling off all the time. I ride English, and the reason you wear a helmet is so you dont fall off and crack your head open. All western riding is, is galloping around in circles around barrels. In English, you have a greater chance of falling off because you are jumping and doing dressage. We dont have to wear a helmet if we dont want to. But it is wise for all riders to wear helmets, becasue you can still fall. We aren't sissies because we care about ourselvs!

i think that it's really important to wear a helmet; I ALWAYS wear one when i ride. I don't bash people who don't wear them, but I think it's dumb. You never know when an accident could happen, you know? Besides I have a Tipperary Helmet that looks really spiffy. Very Stylish! (sp?)

I'm always in awe of you girls! That was a neat looking run. Now i'm from England and barrel racing hasn't hit town here! I like it though......my mare is a welsh Sec D cross.......at the moment we run....ooohhhh I think about a time of 45!!!!! At the end of day, its all fun and doesn't matter.
i agree wit u to. i have been ridin' for only 6 years and my horse only runs about an 18 or high 17. and im almost 15. so no one cares what times u get.. im happy with w/e time i get. i go to all the shows to have fun. thats what everyone should do.
thats how mine is. she tries to run out of the gate and the guy hasent even opened it yet. so when i try to hold her bck she always rears then when im like half way through the show then she calms down chloe is just funny that way
just get as much practice as u can, and have fun with it! if its somethin u really wanna do make the best of it. and it dont matter what u place in the only thing that matters is that u have fun while ur doin it

My other horses all need lots of training. I have a 7yo paint mare thats trotting the pattern and an 11yo paint thats slow loping the pattern. Then I have a unbroke 5yo, 4yo, 2 3yo, and 3 2yos. So I have a lot of prospects. But going to be a long time before any are ready to run.

I'm hoping if Ginger is cleared to run barrels again by the vet, that we will be able to make a few barrel races next year. I haven't barrel raced since 2006, I became ill, which ended with me having a double lung transplant, heart surgery, and repair of my bronchial tube defect. And many surgeries after that. So I'm really excited to get back in the saddle and return to the barrel racing! Ginger is my only finished barrel horse, so waiting on her to heal.

Unfortunately Ginger sustained a injury in February 2008. While playing in the pasture she blew her back right tendon. So she is sidelined. She is healing rather well and we hope she will be back to running barrels next year if the vet says its okay. I would never do anything to hurt her. This mare is like my kid. No matter if she can run barrels again or not, she has a forever home with me. I could never part with her.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Ginger and I really appreciate them. Ginger's registered name is Ponti's Pride. Her bloodlines are Special Effort on top and Ponti on bottom. She is all race bred. She ran QH races before I got her. She is 20yo and I've had her since she came off the track at 7yo.

I see what you are saying - I ride english and western, and although I say english (jumping) is harder, making those tight turns in barrel racing takes an EXTREME amount of skill - not only to make the turn but to stay on as well!

I ride western and english.... And barrel racing is anything but sloppy. You have to know the exact place to start your turn around the barrel and sometimes that is not easy to find, especially when the barrel is placed in a tight corner or something. Its like jumping, you have to have the right natural and artificial tools to do it.

Actually, in some events, like show jumping, ur going as fast as possible to try and make the time allowed as well as a clean round. All i was trying to say is that you have to know what ur doing and how u r going to do it.

i think it is a personal choice if you want to wear a helmet or not. i mean, i wear a helmet and i jumped for six years and still wear one and started barrel racing. there's nothing wrong with it, it's just a choice. it doesn't make you a sissy you are just being prepared in case of a fall. if you don't want to wear a helmet then that's fine. either way horses are AWESOME!GODBLESS

Personally I would rather ride a horse around some barrels as fast as i can then jump shit and hope my horse doesnt refuse. Barrel racing takes a shit load of practice to make the horse do it right. Duh Jumpers(not hunters) have to haul ass too when they ride..

Western riders can get back up on their horses after falling off. So can english riders. I ride english, and I'm not afraid of falling off. Alot of experienced riders aren't. So we don't need to start a war on how "Western riders are better because..." or "English riders are better because...". Both types of riding are very fun and both types of riders are very brave and aren't afraid of falling off.

Ummmm, the only reason we western riders don't wear helments is because we are called, cow/boys/girls. Which means we get back on our horses again unlike those sissy English riders who worry about falling off all the time. If you keep on thinking about falling off your horse and believing your going to get hurt, you'll make it happen because the horse will sense your tense energy, but if your calm, the horse will be calm and nothing bad will happen.

I ride English, and the reason you wear a helmet is so you dont fall off and crack your head open. All western riding is, is galloping around in circles around barrels. In English, you have a greater chance of falling off because you are jumping and doing dressage. We dont have to wear a helmet if we dont want to. But it is wise for all riders to wear helmets, becasue you can still fall. We aren't sissies because we care about ourselvs!

English and western riding have the same degree of danger, I realize that the helmet is used as a protecting aid, but so can a hat. I ride english and western and always wear a helmet just as a precaution, and the fact that i was taught "Ready to ride? No helmet? No Boots? No Way!" But i dont have to ride with a helmet or boots if i dont want to. Just because the majority of english riders choose to wear a helmet, that does not make them prissy riders.
