omg this is beautiful! I have so many questions, How long are you practicing? How did you start? You must really understand your budgies. I have a budgie, he is now 3.rd week with me, i cought him outside, he goes to my hand, and we are starting basic clicker training , but seems I am way more enthusiastic then him. He follows the stick and gains a prize. please help!
@thinkgreen1084 Don't try too hard, better have short sessions, finish when your bird looses interest. You might look at my cockatiel tricks video for ideas. Good luck!
@thinkgreen1084 that's very easy. Just show a sign (whatever you want) to a budgie with one hand, while putting the finger of the other hand to the budgie as if for stepping up.The birdy lifts his leg, you move the finger away and reward him with a treat and praise :)
@Darkrai9547 FIrst you have to have your bird tame and coming onto your hand when you call him. Then gently swing you hand uo, so that the bird flies off, and immediately invite him to come on your hand - he'll fly straight back to you.
Depends on the trick. If it's completely new behaviour I am teachinng, then I say a command, and click and reward for any little effort, event incomplete, to do the behaviour, and eventually they get they idea what they are supposed to do. If it's a behaviour they do sometimes on their own, and I want them to do it on cue, I first click and reward every time they do it, adding the command, until they associate the command with the behaviour.
Ever since I got him new toys and a bigger cage he refuses to go out and sometimes bite me when I try to pet him! I've never bought toys for him until recently. He used to always want to come out and sit on my shoulder. I got him about a month ago and he will eat millets off my hand and do the target training if he's motivated enough. What should I do? I miss my friend :(
Sorry, I didn't see you comment earlier. Try to set a playground for your budgie outside the cage and play with him there. @ruta99 wow thank you so much for all your help. I was really worried about the coldness in my house because even I find it cold and I was thinking maybe I shouldn't get a parakeet because I don't want it to get sick or be unhappy. But I'm glad that the cold temperature won't hurt them
I'll look for a 2months year told budgie but would that be too young?
thank you again for your help and thanks for posting this video I love seeing it
Two months is the age when young budgies start to live independently, because their parents drive them away form their territory,. It's the age at which most breeders will sell young budgies. Some breeders would sell even younger birds, around one month old. but I wouldn't recommend to buy such a young bird, as it still needs additional feeding from its patrents, and it has to learn a lot form them about being a bird.
I have a question- So, my moms friend raises birds and gave us two 10 week old budgies. They are both males. Since they're still young, we don't know if this will change, but we keep them both in the same cage. They seem to get along weel, they never fight and eat and sleep together, but will they start to fight as they mature? And, we're thinking of getting 2 more, would it be ok, even after around a week of them in their cage?
They will get along withour any problems and won;t start fghting if there is no famale with them. WHen they are still very young, adding new birds will not make a diffrence, they all will get along. You can get two more budgies and keep them in the same cage, if the cage is big enough.
I bought a budgie from a pet store and it's a adult. It's afraid of me and I can't seem to tame it. How long will it take to tame it and how do I make it not afraid of me?
nice vid btw. :) oh and the nails of my budgie is really long, how can i clip it when itt runs away?
If you want to carch your budgie for nail clipping, do it in the evening when it:s dark outside. Just look where he is sitting, switch off the lights in the room, and you can easily take him. If your budige is afraid of you, he might bite your fingers when you hold him - be prepared for this.
I bought a budgie from a pet store and it's a adult. It's afraid of me and I can't seem to tame it. How long will it take to tame it and how do I make it not afraid of me?
Nobody can say how long it will take to tame a bird. It depends on bird's personality, human patience and methods used. Try to gain your budigie's trust offering him some millet holding it in your hand. Don't try to reach or touch the bids if he is not relaxed around you. If he is afraid, give him space, and try again when he calms down.
This is an amazing video! My little budgie was a very grumpy unhappy little girl until very recently, I started training her with a clicker and a target stick and she has come to life! I can tell she wants to learn more, and this is the perfect video for training ideas. How did you train these tricks? Did you use a clicker? Were the hand raised or tamed from a pet store? Thanks!
Thank you. Birds like to learn., trick training is an excellent joint activity with your bird. My budgies were all bought in the pet store and then tamed. I used the clicker and reward (millet) training them, but now I use the clicker method, but without the clicker - I make the clicker sound with my tongue. It's much handier as my "clicker" (the tongue) now is always in the right place, so the timing is always perfect, and I get a free hand to hold the treat o sumeting wlse.
If your budgies are very young, you can tame them both together. It 's possible to tameeven older birds together, but you need lots of time and patience. It would be easier to tame them separately. Just be aware, that when you separate them, they will call each other and won;t pay attention to you. It's better to take one bird out of the cage, leaving it in the same room, so that they can see each other, and try to tame the one that is in the cage (millet is a good treat)
Use a word command (like step up or up) and gently put you finger on the bird's belly above the legs. He will step up. It your bird is not very tame, try this with a steck first, then shorten the stick (every time holding it closer), until the bird steps on your hand. If the bird is not tame, it can take tike until he gets confortable and relaxxes. Be patient!
awe, my bird used to play hide and seek and stuff, and he died... new bird hates me, hes so afraid of my hand, and he talks a lot. IS THERE ANY WAY TO GET HIM TO BE OK WITH SITTIN ON MY HAND?
Don't be too intense with the bird, give him space when he wants it, nevert approach him when he is excited or tense, instead go to him when he is totally relaxed and calm. Try offering him treats like millet from you hand, when he gets used to it, shorten the distance, until he has to step on your hand to reach the millet. Don't be tense yoursef - be relaxed and calm, Approach the bird with low energy, don't make sudden movements, but don't be hesitant either. Good luck!
First, get the bird hooked on millet. Then try seeing if he will follow your hand while u are holding some millet for him. If he does, lay down your other hand and then bring the millet over your hand. keep trying this untill he is comfortable going over your hand. Then, you can try putting him on your finger/shoulder. just remember to take it VERY slow
@Badheadphones101 he is not afraid of you hand he is insecure........ try putting your hand out as close to him/her as much as you can slowly untill the bird starts skwocking then slowly wlk away and try again 15 second later reapeat and repeat until you can extremly gently touch his head and slowly walk away
Awsome Video:) please answer this...Are his wings clipped? becuz im thinking about getting a parakeet, I've done alot of research. would it be better to clip only one wing? I'm confused:) Your parakeet is SOOOO cute!!!!!:)
If your bird is very tame and wants to be with you, just reward it with lots of praises, scratching and occasional treat every time he comes when you call him, not when he comes on this own wish. With multiple birds, more important is to teach the bird not to come to you when the other bird is called :D. Anyway, you can do it with any bird - start with short distances (even stepping up), clicker and food reward, and then gradually increase the distance, still using the clicker and the reward.
But you do have a natural in-built clicker - it's your tongue! It is very easy to make a clicker sound with your tongue. I use my tongue all the time instead of the clicker - it's very handy, because the hand is free to hold a treat or to do anything else, and my natural cliclker (the tongue) is always with me, so I can use it instantly. Try it - it works perfectly :)
Thank you. It depends on the trick. Some tricks are very esasy, it takes only a few minutes. some require much more time until the bird understands what you want from him. And some birds get it quicker, some slower. I never rush and always teach one trick at a time, and then move to another one.
many birds would be scared of unfamiliar objects. The birds have to get used to the thing first, before they are taught to do a trick with this thing.
why did you use music from the snooker championship? do your birds play snooker as a trick too? they hold the que with their feet and their beaks and pot the balls on a 6 inch table.
I am not interested is snooker and have no idea what music they play in snooker championship.Tis music is world famous "The Entertainer" (a 1902 classic piano rag written by Scott Joplin).
With pateince, respecting their wishes and not rushing. When you respect the animal, don't do what he does not want and encourage him with something he likes when he is relaxed, he will end up trusting you.
Try feeding him from your hand first (millet usually works) Once he understands that the hand brings good things, put your finger on his belly still holding the millet irthe same hand - he will step onto your finger while eating :)
Hold your birds treat in your right hand and wiggle the fingers as in a small wave, and say Wave. Then put your left hand in front of the birds chest as though you were asking him to step onto it, but do not let him! The minute he starts to lift his left foot to step onto you, withdraw your left hand and praise him immediately, rewarding him at the same time with the treat in your right hand.
Thank you! I noticed how the birds sometimes lift their wings up as if strething . So I started to reward this behaviour with treats, at the same time using clicker and command, as well as visual sign for them. Soon they start to associate the command and the sign with the action (lifting the wings) and do it on command :)
I think you just fflip yuor hand, some birds will naturally hold strong to it, others will need support on the back initially (you might also need to hold their fingers with your finger, so that they don't fall or fly off frightened). But the birds should be very well used to handling. And, of course, reward it.
that's very easy. Just show a sign (whatever you want) to a budgie with one hand, while putting the finger of the other hand to the budgie as if for stepping up.The birdy lifts his leg, you move the finger away and reward him with a treat and praise :)
I love your budgies they are very talented. my 4 budgies dont do anything they just sit there and play with there toys. how long did it take you to teach them those tricks?
Thank you. Some tricks (like waving hello and turning around) are really very easy to teach. It takes only a couple of sessions of about 5 minutes each. Some tricks are more difficult. And counting is actually counting. It is easy for them to count till 5, and then it gets more difficult.
Clicker training :) In the beginning they get rewarded every time they do sometihing I want. After a while they start to repeat behaviour that is rewarded.
waving hello was the best one :D 2nd best was flying away and back

ChibiVamp232 1 year ago
@ChibiVamp232

( n its not in its cage)
PoSsEsEdTOOTLE 1 year ago
@PoSsEsEdTOOTLE
If you want to carch your budgie for nail clipping, do it in the evening when it:s dark outside. Just look where he is sitting, switch off the lights in the room, and you can easily take him. If your budige is afraid of you, he might bite your fingers when you hold him - be prepared for this.

@PoSsEsEdTOOTLE

Thanks!
wickedwitch78 1 year ago
@wickedwitch78
Thank you. Birds like to learn., trick training is an excellent joint activity with your bird. My budgies were all bought in the pet store and then tamed. I used the clicker and reward (millet) training them, but now I use the clicker method, but without the clicker - I make the clicker sound with my tongue. It's much handier as my "clicker" (the tongue) now is always in the right place, so the timing is always perfect, and I get a free hand to hold the treat o sumeting wlse.

thanks.
No, they don't talk. My male cockatiel ca say a few words, though.

@sosweetlittlegirl99
If your budgies are very young, you can tame them both together. It 's possible to tameeven older birds together, but you need lots of time and patience. It would be easier to tame them separately. Just be aware, that when you separate them, they will call each other and won;t pay attention to you. It's better to take one bird out of the cage, leaving it in the same room, so that they can see each other, and try to tame the one that is in the cage (millet is a good treat)

can u show me how to teach a parakeet or budgie to stay on my hand or stepup
JAMMZKATZ1O1 1 year ago
@JAMMZKATZ1O1

Badheadphones101 1 year ago
@Badheadphones101
Good luck!
ruta99 1 year ago
@Badheadphones101
753flipflop 1 year ago
@Badheadphones101 he is not afraid of you hand he is insecure........ try putting your hand out as close to him/her as much as you can slowly untill the bird starts skwocking then slowly wlk away and try again 15 second later reapeat and repeat until you can extremly gently touch his head and slowly walk away

Awsome Video:) please answer this...Are his wings clipped? becuz im thinking about getting a parakeet, I've done alot of research. would it be better to clip only one wing? I'm confused:) Your parakeet is SOOOO cute!!!!!:)

Thank you.
I never clip wings to my birds - birds ame meant to fly. If you get a young parakeet, there should be no problem taming it without wing clipping.

who know how to learn a budgie to came when you call ? plizz tell me
MultiMuffin123 1 year ago
If your bird is very tame and wants to be with you, just reward it with lots of praises, scratching and occasional treat every time he comes when you call him, not when he comes on this own wish. With multiple birds, more important is to teach the bird not to come to you when the other bird is called :D. Anyway, you can do it with any bird - start with short distances (even stepping up), clicker and food reward, and then gradually increase the distance, still using the clicker and the reward.
ruta99 1 year ago
@ruta99 but the problem is i didnt have a clicker
MultiMuffin123 1 year ago
@MultiMuffin123

How long did it take to train them all those tricks?
tyrannaskyrulz 1 year ago
@tyrannaskyrulz

How soon the budgie starts to speak and if it speaks at all depends on individual budgie, as well as on your time and efforts.
One of my answers to the comments below contains information on teaching budgie to wawe.

why did you use music from the snooker championship? do your birds play snooker as a trick too? they hold the que with their feet and their beaks and pot the balls on a 6 inch table.

how do u get them so tame and to trust u?
chamjoan 2 years ago
With pateince, respecting their wishes and not rushing. When you respect the animal, don't do what he does not want and encourage him with something he likes when he is relaxed, he will end up trusting you.

This is so cool!
My budgie wont even step onto my finger, he just bites me really hard. Can you please tell me how to make him stop biting me and step onto my finger?
Pikachu7755 2 years ago
Try feeding him from your hand first (millet usually works) Once he understands that the hand brings good things, put your finger on his belly still holding the millet irthe same hand - he will step onto your finger while eating :)

with repetition and positive reinforcement (rewarding). You have to tame your birds first before theachng them tricks.
ruta99 2 years ago
hello amazing amazing plz teach me how to get my budgie to wave! PLZ REPLY!
pumpador 2 years ago
Hold your birds treat in your right hand and wiggle the fingers as in a small wave, and say Wave. Then put your left hand in front of the birds chest as though you were asking him to step onto it, but do not let him! The minute he starts to lift his left foot to step onto you, withdraw your left hand and praise him immediately, rewarding him at the same time with the treat in your right hand.

awsom tricks!!
i taught mine to go threw a paper towel tube and wave!
how do u get them to put there wings up like that?!?!?
sportsgirl4444 2 years ago
Thank you! I noticed how the birds sometimes lift their wings up as if strething . So I started to reward this behaviour with treats, at the same time using clicker and command, as well as visual sign for them. Soon they start to associate the command and the sign with the action (lifting the wings) and do it on command :)
ruta99 2 years ago
by the way do you know how to teach them to hang upside down in ur had...i think its called like the bat or something...
sportsgirl4444 2 years ago

Jodi19961996 2 years ago
Thank you. Some tricks (like waving hello and turning around) are really very easy to teach. It takes only a couple of sessions of about 5 minutes each. Some tricks are more difficult. And counting is actually counting. It is easy for them to count till 5, and then it gets more difficult.
