Collectors: I have two virgin UNUSED tickets to a 1965 The Who show, put on by the now extinct White Front stores in the San Fernando valley. Bids now being taken.
This is so cool! i was 17 in 65 and didn't know of the Who until a few yrs later at Woodstock and with the release of TOMMY I think keith rules ~ thank god for the 70's hair styles for roger ~ in '65 I was into Zappa, 4 Tops, Byrds AND YARDBIRDS!
Even Daltrey was amazed (at 3:00) at how Keith was able to instantly resurrect the song back from the chaotic interlude. He looks back at Keith then laughs in disbelief.
When i watch this kind of videos ( of the best band ever) i just want to step in a f*cking time machine and go there to watch a concert where they show you how to make real music!
@18ofmeer Getin the queue bud,I'm shot gun with that time machine!ha! Never get bored of this performance. Wish I was there in the 60's,i'd prob be in my 60's,but who cares?
@Wrightwasright Best drummer on the planet.Look at him here roger turns around several times saying this kid is not human. Watch 3.00 mark roger laughs turning around .
I love how halfway through the song townshend just like " I don't like this guitar" and he takes it of and tosses it then picks up another one and starts tuning while the rest of them go on with the song. Lol!
This performance is absolute CHAOS!! In 1965 the Beatles were becoming a studio band and the Stones gigs were but very boring (the only moving part was Jagger). The Who was absolutely wild at this time. They smile at each other because they baldly can hear each other. This is one of the few shows with Moon wearing a hi-hat and A single bass drum. Entwhistle plays a vintage Danelectro Longhorn Bass (.ca 1959) which he hab purchased to play the "My Generation" solos.
@1danny1995 its anyhow,anyway,anywhere - proper mod anthem. How good is this clip, moonie mayhem - always love the early who, so raw and brilliant and exciting - drumming is incredible.Original punk attitude..
@1danny1995 yes mate, if you like who stuff from around this time (65) and dont know about them type in "the goods gone", "much too much" from the my generation album, also try "circles"- other ace tunes
Oh Moonie..the best drummer ever in one of the best bands ever. I love watching him get pissed at Daltrey for fucking with his cymbal at 1:40 so he throws it down. Never knew what these guys were gonna do maybe beat the shit out of each other. Punks before punk was even thought of.....The 'Orrible Oo
he was a proper legend, the drums are not just keeping time when Moon plays, it's kinda like an extra guitar. He's playing his own melody, just making it up there and then. and how old is he there about 18. Read a biography of Moon and in the early they hated each other and regulaly kicked the shit out of each other with Daltrey apparently being a bit handy was sacked for 3 days until he promised to stop acting the c***
Keith moon's not only the best drummer because of his talent and skill (which would still make him hands down best) but he's also well known for his innovation of the instrument (he plays Fills like no one else does) and in my opinion he plays kinda like the lead guitarist rather than a drummer who just keeps the beat. He hardly ever provides solely the back beat a lot of the time he adds flare and style and most of the time no measure is the same as the next.
@FFGG22E often the people who put together the footage don't do it too well. I have plently of music dvds where things are like this, but I know the band is playing live.
Maybe their worst selling album is there best - The Who Sellout. Side one is just one of the best ever .. from Armenian city in the sky to I Can see for miles.
They wrote many good songs but I never want to hear Who are You or Squeeze box Or don't get fooled again. I propose that when Rodger sang in a softer, sweeter voice - as he does on Who Sellout, that he was at his best, imo.
His rock and roll voice just gets on my nerves. Now send me hate mail..
I think The Who's first 3 albums are fucking stellar..."A Quick One" is probably my favorite, but "Sell Out" is a great album...psychedelia infused 'mod' rock!
The Who truly became terrible...especially after Keith Moon died, but I can't tolerate anything by them after "Live at Leeds". "Who's Next" is surely a great album, but I hate it.
Daltrey sounded great early on, as he did later - I just don't like it.
@asmorgan88 Yeah that is just how I feel "Who's next is a great album, but I hate it". Everything you wrote I agree with. One other question : while Pete Townsend is wind-milling his guitar, he looks so cool but he could be adding a few notes or tuning his guitar. Creativity and style once in a while suffocates music. Hey did you see the High Numbers, the who before the who, they do a nice Smokey Robinson "I got to dance to keep from crying" .. on youtube. Have a great day.
HAHAH - The windmill is also one of rock's greatest tricks, as Pete never (intentionally) struck any of the strings with his strumming hand - the sound comes from his LEFT hand that was essentially doing repetitive hammer-ons to the chords or whatever. He wasn't STRUMMING on those windmills.
While he was a great showman, & icon, yeah...sometimes it's a bit much & does detract from the quality...I always felt that, but Moon & Entwistle make up for it! The High Numbers! Great stuff!
@asmorgan88 Thanks for the info .. I really never noticed but then I don't watch the Who much but the tribute to them is only 24/7 on Vh1. What you say makes great sense. I really don't run into anyone who agrees with me and antagonize lots but it's nice to agree and wish I could more often but I will not lie on youtube (but, sure, in real life..ha). You are very sharp.
HAHAH - that tribute on VH1 with fucking Pearl Jam & The Foo Fighters is terrible!
Footage of the early Who is definitely worth watching. Try to see the film "The Kids Are Alright" - there's a lot of their older garbage on there, but there's a hell of a lot of good early shit too.
I hate how upset & emotional people get when you say anything less than worshiping about bands/musicians - especially Zeppelin fans, holy fuck!
@asmorgan88 Yeah Eddie Vedder has not yet written a great song but once he did write coherent lyrics on "Wish List" (good song) and he should only be at tributes because he has a great voice and does great versions of Last Date and Leaving Her and Phil Ochs songs. Yeah Led Zep stole countless lyrics and melodies .. really the biggest music thieves in history, less the the time Dylan actually stole a boatload of blues records from a friend's home. At least the critics were right on Zep.
@asmorgan88 Just to be fair, Entwistle reinvented the bass as much as Moon did the drums. So lay off the Who - man it is all about attitude and nobody commands a stage as Roger and Pete. See I can shovel drool with the best of them.
Yes, Keith was 19 years old in this video. His 20th birthday would be later that month (August). This song is one of their least appreciated (their second single I believe).
In 1965 when ever the wearing of T-shirt onstage was sign of ultimate rebelly, this kind of performance was clearly pretty shock. But possible in jazz festival because jazz was even dirtier music then.
to me,rock is before and after of the who,they revolutionized all rock, in attitud and music,keith are and was a big influence of to many big drummers, just like townsend on guitar,jhon on bass and roger on vocals and as a front man, just a great great band
Keith Moon used to go to The Rocky Horror Picture Show when it first started on a stage. He would bring each cast member a bottle of whiskey, and that's how they'd know he was there. He'd set the whiskey on the stage before each show. Food for thought.
Neil Peart, drummer for Rush once said he would listen to Keith Moons drums and play along with him. No wonder he rose to be best drummer in the world!
@ccfire63 This band sucks?!?! You obviously dont know what the fuck you are talking about or are some deaf dumb and blind kid, go play pinball..asshole
i love the who..seen them many times going back to 72..what a great no bs band..the perfect 4 guys..great songwriting and just smashing there way through the tunes..punk before there was punk.."whos left" from the 60s..thank god not much..pete and roger and zak do a great job..long live rock.
the whole thing was dubbed but the most important thing was after pete chucked his rickenbacker over the amp the horrified look on his face. like he was some ones puppet. first hand i have been on stage and all you can do is try to bury the drummer with more amp- till yu go deaf
When the Beatles were singing "I want to hold your hand," the Stones were singing "I want to get in your pants" ... And the Who were singing "I'm going to burn your fucking house down."
But, John Bonham is the biggest Keith Moon fan of all time, & watching footage of Bonzo, you can see that he clearly not only wanted to play just like Moon, but look like he did behind the kit as well...
How old is Moon here? 19 years old or some shit? You've got to be kidding me...to play like he's doing throughout this tune alone, let alone all the other shit they have out, at 19 is ridiculous.
Bonham is Keith Moon's biggest fan...just watch footage of him, he even tries to act like him.
Who at age 18 could play drums like Moon? Nobody.
Keith's drumming was, and still is, the best rock & roll drumming ever.
Led Zeppelin is a far better band, musically & commercially, but Keith Moon, John Entwistle, & Roger Daltrey were all better at what they did than Plant, JPJ, & Bonzo.
Damn they're so young then

the whole thing was dubbed but the most important thing was after pete chucked his rickenbacker over the amp the horrified look on his face. like he was some ones puppet. first hand i have been on stage and all you can do is try to bury the drummer with more amp- till yu go deaf

"The who" would make a great subject for the next "Rockband" video game.
timberwolf84 2 years ago 5
Awesome stuff!
When the Beatles were singing "I want to hold your hand," the Stones were singing "I want to get in your pants" ... And the Who were singing "I'm going to burn your fucking house down."
It doesn't get any more rock and roll than this.
klaptongroovemaster 2 years ago 54
Also, The Who were setting the standards for real rock; feedback, volume and trashing gear.

Keith Moon is, hands down, the greatest drummer of all time...
asmorgan88 2 years ago 34
@asmorgan88 lets not get ahead of ourselfs now and forgret the great lord bonzo
goonyougoodthing 1 year ago
@goonyougoodthing
HAHAH - I'll go ahead & respect your opinion...
Keith Moon is the best ever.
asmorgan88 1 year ago
@asmorgan88 you are clearly one of the most respectable and educated people on the internet and you have passed the test

@scarfacejosh123
That's cool - he played on a bunch of good shit.
asmorgan88 1 year ago
@asmorgan88 bonham was far better
angusbaird1 1 year ago
@angusbaird1
Bonham is Keith Moon's biggest fan...just watch footage of him, he even tries to act like him.
Who at age 18 could play drums like Moon? Nobody.
Keith's drumming was, and still is, the best rock & roll drumming ever.
Led Zeppelin is a far better band, musically & commercially, but Keith Moon, John Entwistle, & Roger Daltrey were all better at what they did than Plant, JPJ, & Bonzo.
asmorgan88 1 year ago
@asmorgan88 Neil Peart is better than Keith by far
grossdale1 1 year ago
@grossdale1 hell no... there is no passion in his drumming... its just a lot of technical stuff but they both kick ass
