  • Other than the fact that it looks all wrong, it looks spot on. 6 buttons on the right = A, B, and the 4 C buttons. 3 handles, joystick, centered start button, and unnecessary D-pad. Pretty cool, actually.

    The predecessor to the internet, ARPAnet, was around in 1969. Public access to the internet started taking off in 1989, and it was around 1995 that it became a common thing.

    KI2 WAS released in arcades 1st. Also, N64's KI Gold didn't quite make the US launch, though it did make the pre-Christmas "launch window."

  • @CZroe um first of all KI isn't made by nintendo, second of all donkey kong and thats it. the rest of those games were NES games and so is the play choice machine.... that doesn't count as arcade experience in the sense of say capcom or sega's arcade experience.... you have to think of the era the show was made. back then arcades still existed and none were filled with nintendo machines.

  • @MrDebauch It was made WITH Nintendo. It wouldn't exist w/o Nintendo. Nintendo's logos are more prominent than Rare's both in-game and on the cabinet and the hardware was meant to be a precursor to the N64. Also, you are a complete MORON if you think Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros, Popeye, etc were NES games before they were arcade games (NOT PlayChoice games). The NES' success was partially because it brought these hits home. Arcades were filled w/ Nintendo classics. "Punch-Out!" != "Punch-Out!!"

Sorry buddy, nintendo had one game... donkey kong... and you haven't seen those in arcades in over 20 years.

  • @MrDebauch Are you kidding me? Capcom arcade presence was still pretty much only SFII variants back then. Sega had a larger presence but not when Nintendo was dominating arcades in the '80s. So, what exactly is your point? That Nintendo has no arcade experience just because some companies have more? That's ludicrous. Nintendo was MILES ahead of Sega and Capcom in 1985 when the NES launched. If you still want to make your point, you DO need to continue. Every *real* arcade has Nintendo titles.

  • @MrDebauch OK, so Ninty had "no" experience & yet Midway came to 'em for Cruisin' hardware & Namco/Sega came for the Tri-Force platform? No. They focused on a console & cooperated in the arcades instead of competing. They were dominating before so it had to do w/what was more profitable not w/them "losing." They smartly focused on the NES making it a huge success. Ninty had variants (vs, Super) while Capcom didn't. 10yrs later Cap was then all about pathetic SFII variants & they rose from there.

  • @CZroe dont start calling SF2 pathetic just because we are disagreeing... SF2 variants were great, and they still hold sf2 tournaments to this day. You may think it is pathetic, but that is your opinion... it may be pathetic if they kept releasing them and they didn't do well... which is not the case. either way, in my experience nintendo didn't have the dominance in our arcades that capcom and sega had... no way in hell. withdrew or not our arcades weren't 25% nintendo games in '95.

  • @MrDebauch At the time, Capcom's fighter market was still just SFII variants including and the SF movie game. I wasn't insulting SFII. I was saying that it WAS pathetic that they had not actually made a true sequel or prequel. All gamers felt that way then. Capcom was only "dominating" their own sub-genre then for which there was little to compete.

  • @CZroe first of all the SF the movie game was SF2 with a different look.. and it came out in what? 96-97? a prequel? well there was an original street fighter but it wasn't that good, a prequel... might be neat. the sf variants had added characters which is all that is needed in a fighting game... should they have changed the story line? And final fight was another huge game which is not a vs fighting game, dont forget back then beat em ups were popular since double dragon.

  • @MrDebauch That's exactly what I said. SFII vairants "including" the SF Movie game. Also, it was 1995 (movie was 1994).

    FYI, SF Zero/Alpha was a prequel. It didn't exist then.

    The SFII variants did add characters and greatly modified the story for existing charaters, like having Akuma as the main antagonist instead of M.Bison.

  • @CZroe Well, SF Alpha came out in late 1995 but it didn't spread in the States and far outside of Japan until 1996. That's also when they released the CPS Changer version.

  • @CZroe well yes in super you do have akuma as the boss, and bison was a good playable character... plus the turbo settings... story lines did exist but were barely a reason to be playing the game, street fighter is not an RPG... it is not played for the story line or series of terrible movies to get released. I will say though, during the early and mid 90's SF2, final fight, tmnt, simpsons, xmen arcade... those were seen... punch out, mario bros, and popeye were not. I didn't invent history.

    I'd have to say that's incorrect. "New releases" were always at the front. If you go to the back you'd find at least 2 or 3 Nintendo machines. This was true of every real arcade I visited in the 90's (my first was '95).

Anyways I wasn't saying you would never see nintendo in arcades... you did on occasion see DK which at that point was over a decade old.. it was nintendo's biggest hit in the arcades. but come on, nintendo didn't put out a quarter of the amount of games in arcades that capcom alone put out, never mind midway, sega, namco, etc.. on top of that...golden tee golf was the most played ever lol

  • @MrDebauch Popeye was an arcade hit, as was Mario Bros. Nintendo meant much more than Sega or Capcom in the 80s still meant a lot at the time of that video. In fact, they were making a huge come-back since early 1995 with Cruisin' USA, Killer Instinct 1&2. Any REAL arcade when that video was made had Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, AND Mario Bros. Most had Punch-Out! and Super Mario Bros. Even today, it's easy to find Cruisin' or a KI game in the real arcades (not a bowling alley w/less than 15 machines).

  • @CZroe well today arcades dont really exist here in north america... but honestly, KI was barely a hit in the arcade fighter world... sure the game was awesome and super on the SNES, but where is it today? when is the last time you've seen a KI machine regularly? Funny, cause you want to talk mid 90's fighters you still see every other fighter from that era in arcades. Anyways, point is, nintendo was a "has been" in arcades when that video was made. They weren't dominating the arcades.

    So no longer being dominant & being a "has been" = no experience? Notice: That video was 15 years ago. Nintendo was still a huge arcade presence 8-10 years before that...more so than Capcom or Sega. It's like saying Sega has no console experience because their last console was released in 1999. It's just silly, wrong, & indefensible and they said it in response to wrongly thinking KI2 was direct to N64 and not arcade.

I do not. maybe your arcades were different then ours locally, but honestly... out of arcades that housed over 100 machines here you would be lucky to see a donkey kong machine or even a KI machine where as there was an abundance of sega and capcom machines, midway, etc... even namco when it comes to retro machines. The show is circa '95 and I live in canada and saw it.

  • @MrDebauch I didn't say that. The video was made in '95 but such a statement requires a 2000-2010 perspective. Capcom was still mired in SFII variants and Nintendo's experience was more recent then than Sega's console experience today. Capcom had not yet exploded into the huge arcade presence they would have by the end of the '90s. Donkey Kong is almost as common as Pac-Man (possibly more so). I find it alone far more often than I find any Capcom or Sega game (gas stations, laundrymat, etc).

  • @CZroe really? here you are WAY more likely to see a sf2 machine or an MK2 machine in a gas station or laundry mat then a DK machine... or pacman, however pacman/galaga combo machines were popular. But again, pacman being a namco classic was still more commonly seen then DK up here. Oh and by the way, sf2 and final fight were huge way before the end of the 90's... by the end of the 90's our hype was MvC, 3rd strike, tekken 3, ultimate 3, need I go on?

    And that's exactly what I was saying. In 1995, they had one major hit (SFII) with a few minor hits. It wasn't until after '95 that they exploded, so you can't use that context to justify the incorrect statement in the video. Even if Capcom was huge in 1995, to imply that it somehow detracts from Nintendo's experience is just silly.

  • @CZroe um if you didn't consider final fight a major hit you have never been inside an arcade during that era period... point is, it is fact that nintendo was nothing in arcades compared to capcom or sega or midway in '95... when that video was made the biggest thing nintendo did up until that point in arcades was DK, which in the mid 90's was completely overshadowed.... as was every other golden era game for the most part.

  • @MrDebauch Any time I find a place with 8 or more machines, it's almost sure to have both Donkey Kong and KI. Often there are other Nintendo titles like Mario Bros. Some even have Punch Out! (not the same game as the NES version). Nintendo was as big a contender as anyone else for as long as they cared to compete. They didn't get pushed out either. They just followed the money when the consoles were successful. It's ignorant to pick a narrow time window and claim that nothing else matters.

I find it a treat to find a donkey kong or a KI machine in a side of the road stop... nintendo didn't hold nearly that much arcade real estate in the arcades I played at... 2-4 games out of 8? that is 25 to 50 % of the games being nintendo? that wasn't the case anywhere I have been.

  • @MrDebauch Killer Instinct 1, 2, and Gold were fully published and distributed by Nintendo for Nintendo with Rareware as a second-party developer... unlike their later N64 games that were "Published by Rare." Nintendo championed the hardware and worked w/Rare to develop the game (watch the secret end of the Donkey Kong Country preview video to see the Nintendo of America Treehouse crew including Armond Williams & Ken Lobb working on a very early version of the game). If you don't know, shut up.

    At the time of KI, Rare was basically a Nintendo studio. Nintendo has both internal development "houses" (HAL, EAD, Intelligent Systems) and foreign studios (Retro Studios, Rare). After Donkey Kong Country, Nintendo owned most of Rare and it operated as Nintendo's European studio.

    Similarly, 2K Games and Rockstar have studios around the world.

    Games developed by the internal group known as "Team Ninja" are still Tecmo games, no?

  • @jevansturner okay, so are you with the other guy on saying that nintendo has more arcade experience then capcom and sega or something? Sorry, I thought rare was entirely responsible for KI and didn't realize nintendo has so much involvement with the series.. either way, KI was huge on the SNES, and not that huge in arcades... notice though that street fighter 2 was so huge in arcades that they ported it to every single console and they still port it to every new console today.

  • @MrDebauch I would say that Nintendo had more arcade experience than Sega or Capcom until Nintendo mostly abandoned the arcades and Sega / Capcom kept on producing them. During that period (before Nintendo re-entered with KI), Sega had some real turds like Time Traveler / Holosseum. After the financial successes of SF and MK, Nintendo saw dollar signs and made a HUGE hit with KI.

    I don't know about Canada, but the KI machine was the only one that ever had a line in GA. KI2 was the same.

  • @MrDebauch Of course they ported SF to every console, because Capcom would make more money by selling more units. Nintendo would make their title exclusive to their own platform so it would sell more systems. Then Nintendo would make money from every title you bought for that system (Nintendo-developed or not). KI could have been a bigger franchise if it was allowed to be multi-platform, but that wouldn't make sense for Nintendo because Nintendo's games would help to sell competitors' platforms.

  • @jevansturner of course they could port to every system... and it sold well on every system due to it's arcade popularity. SF2 is the reason fighters became so popular. of course capcom ported it to make money... and as we now know... they did make money because the game was huge.

  • @MrDebauch KI couldn't be ported to a non-Nintendo console because Rare was a second-party Nintendo developer, so there is no comparison. If anyone thinks that the Treehouse video was just NoA testing, consider that Nintendo's own Ken Lobb provided the voice for Chief Thunder and named his moves (Samamish was a lake nearby named for an Indian tribe).

  • @deltafreelancer No. It ripped off each of the competition's innovations. Even before the DualShock, they copied shoulder buttons and doubled them. After N64, they copied force feedback and doubled it and analog. They just stuck analog where it would fit and doubled it to balance the design, which is inferior. That's why no other dual analog controller ever put them down there until the Wii's "classic" controller

  • back in the day people were obsessed with the number of bits a system was capable of processing. NES was 8bit, SNES was 16bit, SEGACD was considered 32bit, and N64 claimed to be 64bit. Now people don't really talk about it because there's a lot more to a system than just bits.
