Hello fellow dreamcast lovers. Is there a case or protective carrying bag for the dreamcast? You know like XBOX has a carry case. If so can you guys send me a link to a place that sells one.
At 7:18 you wrote that any console without 3rd party support was doomed. N64 & Master System both didn't win the console war but they certainly didn't fail. N64 did better than Saturn, Master System did better than 7800.
Skies of Arcadia was probably the best RPG I have ever played. It had some game mechanics that I still have never seen in any other game to this day. I really wish that SEGA would make a spiritual sequel to this game since the ending of Arcadia was pretty solid and don't really want it ruines. Guess the closest thing I'll get is Vyse, Akia and Fina in Valkyria Chronicles. I really did miss the great games of the Dreamcast, I just got another one a few days ago. Needs some cleaning though.
I bought a brand new (supposedly) dreamcast in the factory unopened box a couple months back. I also fixed another dreamcast console that had a bricked controller port and restored it.
I love dreamcast. I just need to mod them now lol.
I had one back in '00. I returned it because of overheating. But a friend of mine has one and is giving it to me for free here within the week! He said he and his brother won it in a drawing played it once and boxed it. I don't know how long it was left alone but I can't wait.
So like I said, The 32X was a bigger mistake. (I already mentioned Saturn's success in Japan)
Honestly, I don't think there's any way a branch of Sega was unaware of a consoles development. The American Saturn launched within 6 months of the 32X. So games for the American Saturn had to be in development before the 32X launched. The Japanese Saturn was on shelves the same month the 32x launched in America. And the Japanese Saturn and 32X launched within a month of eachother.
this an old topic but sega of japan was still making dreamcast and games up 2005 or 2004 and thay had gd rom too if the japanese were making dreamcast console in that time how the hell the did the US stop making for console 3 years before the japanese stop dreamcast in japan 1998-2004 or 2005 the US 1999-2001 ? anwser+=petar moore was segas presendent in 1999-2003 than joining microsoft in that same year 2003 he is the dream killer
@steveandbobsho replying to my own comment by 2001 the year of segas failing nfl-2k1 was one of the games aviable to xbox and ps2 and of course dreamcast hears the funny part that game released back in sept 7-2000 why is that funny its becuse sega was not a 3rd party company yet sega dint stop production of dreamcasts intel sometime jan 2001 so did peter moore make a deal with micososoft so he could screw sega and be part of xbox team?
i have genesys , dreamcast , game gear, master system. sega saturn, N65 super nes, nes, nintendo gamecube, xbox, & im very dissapoint of the actual generation., & i dont bought any console, because this generation all are grapchics, if is for that reason?? i have my pc!! , this generation dont do it any memorable things... that is the reason for i dont bought, and i dont wanna buy 360 , wii, ps3, all whitout personality... i love 8 to 128 bits gens the games was games !! in all ways!!
Also Sega had a very ugly history with dumping hardware projects and leaving developers and consumers stuck with expensive dead hardware. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Developers I'm sure walked on eggshells when dealing with Sega because they've been known to pull the plug.
Remember that the Dreamcast came out during PS1 and N64 life cycle. The highly successful launch was highly due to the fact that DC's visuals blew those systems away. After PS2 came out, it was a different story
I have a few more ideas why the Dreamcast died an early death. Sega always marched to the beat of their own drum. They didn't have alot of mainstream games. While that is a good quality, not having enough multi-plats and strong contending software to compete with Sony's flagship titles hurt Sega.
I think the Dreamcast has been highly overrated due to the fact that today the game industry has tanked into multi-plat hell. Dreamcast was the exact opposite of that.
I'd love Sega to come back with a new machine.....I just bought a dreamcast with 35 games on yahoo auctions here in Tokyo...hehe...cant wait til it arrives tomorrow! Keep making the good vids!!!
I still can't get my head around why Sega would announce they're gonna end the DC when they see a sales boost. I reckon if they kept it around, it could've bested, or if not that then equaled, the GameCube.
Still, it's cool to know you can get hi-res versions of PS1 and N64 games :P Hydro Thunder looks gorgeous. It's just a shame they never put Wipeout 3 on the system. That would've looked amazing.
There were modems made for game consoles both before and after the dreamcast. But the Dreamcast was the first console to come with one built into the console.
@L1Games it was a good console i paid £150 in woolworths around 14 years ago.i did play copy games on it stupid console did not even need a chip or a boot cd to play games.could have been much better.i loved shenmue 1+2 and MSR.a big step up from ps1/sega saturn but ps2 was more powerfull had a dvd drive and a wider selection of games.
in the end the PS2 had a much bigger library, but in the beginning, the dreamcast broke all prior launch software and hardware sales of the time. and it's game library was stellar:)
if Sega had gone with the DVD drive over the GD drive, history would have told a different story. Unfortunately, the cost of the DVD drive when the DC was in development was too high. The PS2 came out a year later, so sony had an extra year to work on the tech and specs. (to make it superior)
More than the saturn, Sega messed up with the 32X. the Saturn was a good console, but hard to program. it did however, enjoy a full lifespan in Japan. (6 years) Which at the time was a bigger Video Game Market than America. It wasn't as successful as the PS1. But It did OK for being held together by only one market.
It was the 32X that damaged the trust of their clientele.
yeah i love sega and i won a dream cast when i was in fith grade for a dalla. Needless to say i was not popular after that, but i noticed instantly that games were disapearing and i had to go hunting for games in pawnshops to later find out from a friend that they used a cd compatible laser and i couldnt believe they ruined themselves by doing so......but yeah it deserved better
I never use to pirate games at all when the Dreamcast was around I would go buy them from the store but now I pirate games to find out witch ones are worth buying the real copys off
So would I be far off in guessing you run a games shop? Hmm...you got any full time positions for game reviewers there? The style of reviewing involves voicing my opinion while playing thru the game then someone takes notes and writes up a review based on my comments.
I am willing to start for a low salary of say, $100,000 per year.
Oh, and I will need an extra comfy chair and lots of kfc...but i don't like the handwipes that kfc gives you so ill need some damp cloths...
Lol i remember when the dreamcast came out i wanted one so bad but never could afford it at the time. Still have not got one but i remember playing Crazy Taxi at the stores ALL the time.
i thought the reason sega stopped making the dreamcast was because bernie stolar was fired and the new mangament wanted to focus on making software. I dont think anybody really knows the true reason why sega discontinued, but i believe it was all management. There might not even be an xbox today if the dreamcast was never cancelled.
yeah, that loss hit them pretty hard. when you compare Sega to the likes of MS and Sony, a 750 Million dollar loss is devastating. (meanwhile the big guys take multi billion dollar losses and shrug it off.)
Hopefully, if were lucky, We'll see the day Sega decides to jump back in the market. they could totally do what Nintendo has done this gen. I'd love to see that happen:)
@L1Games Me you broth bro, the reason i think everyone was so devastated when sega discontinued the dreamcast was because it was so groundbreaking and it left us all hungry for more.
Isn't sega working on something already ringedge/wide? Well thats what happens when big greedy companies get involved they take over. nintendo was in trouble too during the days of the ps2 and xbox but luckily they had the cash to weather the storm. but their back now firing on all cyliders, go nintendo/sega!!!
I actually aquired a dreamcast recently. (Black limited edition sports) Not sure what to do about games though, I can't get the programs to bootleg them on my computer anyway. =\ I'll just have to use e-bay.
When the Dreamcast came out, I always wondered what was like. My friend found his old Dreamcast and is now selling it to me, cannot wait to play it xD
Quick question...what were your thoughts when it was announced that Dreamcast production would stop? Did you see it coming? I know it was a quite a shock for most people.
Sega Dreamcast....This was well put, L1 Games. I still have my Dreamcast since Christmas 1999 and it is definitely a timeless classic. Unfortunately, my games are hidden in the storage space from when I moved five years ago. But, it will live on for many gamers hearts forever.
Well said. I didn't know how great of a system Dreamcast was until about 2 years ago when I finally picked one up on the cheap. On a side note, I have beat SEAMAN and it is a crazy game.
my good sir, i totally agree with you. i still have my dreamcast and i love the bastard. like xbox and gamecube or n64 wasnt going as sharp as the dreamcast or ps2. but sad to say its okay ya kno shot happens and i miss sega in the full consoles development but dreamcast xbox and xbox 360 r pretty much one in the same.
I still have my Dreamcast and I played both Shenmue games, Shenmue is definitely the best Dreamcast game ever, and Shenmue II was even better than the first one in my opinion. Too bad it wasn't released for the Dreamcast in America. But really, I think you people should definitely heed Muzz's words and go play it, Shenmue is much too awesome!. I'm sure that after you've played through both Shenmue games you WILL be begging for Shenmue III like the rest of the world is.
I dunno, I got Shemnue 1 and 2 when I got my Dreamcast, and from what I've played of the first one it has a pretty good story but the gameplay is kinda boring and the voice acting is...to call it horrific would be being nice.
The same thing is going on with the PSP. Then PSP hardware keeps selling high numbers, yet the software doesn't sell at all. This is because a great number of PSP owners download their games for free. This is the main reason why Sony developed the PSPgo.
=( i miss mine! Stupid evil husband gave me one then a week later took it and let his lil bro borrow it and then and then and then evil lil bro in law sold it :(
I would agree with you L1Games on your conclusion as to why the Dreamcast failed. Piracy is a BIG issue. I think Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft realized the mistake that SEGA made with using the GD-ROM format. How could a system be called a failure though if it has such a huge following even today? I think SEGA needs to realize the actual success it had with the Dreamcast.
powerstone was an immense game :D i never owned a DC but i knew a few people that had one and it was an amazing console. soul calibur using the fishing rod was amazing lmao
I had a Dreamcast, but my cousin broke it. :( I didn't know that it was so easy to pirate the games though. I would get another Dreamcast, but they are expensive and hard to find.
THere was actually something that wasn't true. The dreamcast wasn't the first home console that came with that modem and you could , go online with. Why because in 1997, Apple realeased a console called the Apple Pipin. It wasn't really popular though.
Ah, the Pippin. I need one for my collection. There were less than 100,000 of those made!
The modems for the Pippin (14.4, 28.8, 33.6kbit/s) were sold separately and external. (Just confirmed it on the MacGeek Pippin FAQ) There were actually more of those manufactured than there were consoles. In 1996 they announced the Pippin and 28.8 modem bundle.
I replaced a broken PSX with a DC, and since then I've had 1, then 2, then 3 and now I am back to one. I have been spreading the Dreamcast love! Dreamcast is one of the greatest systems ever!
I was never able to get my hands on a Dreamcast, but I always played it at my friend's and it kicked major ass! Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, Soul Calibur, all great titles. I need to get a Dreamcast, if only for the nostalgia.
wow just considering how the dreamcast is WAY OBSOLETE by now, how does sony expect the PS3 to last 10 years!?!? im not dissing on the dreamcast but sony has to be realistic. imagine an xbox 720 or something like that in mehbe five years to blow the ps3 out of the water.... sony would definitely have to step up again right?
I totally agree and i have to say that the system may not be selling on the market but as long as gamers still hope for a second Dreamcast or love the games like sonic adventure or Sword of the Berserker then the system is still alive and still.......thinking. I hope they release a new version to teach the next gen what they're still missing even though don't get me wrong I still enjoy them but you know it's whats in now. My favorite console of all time.
It was around 11:00. Me and my father was catching the bus to get to Electronics Botique (now called GameStop) at Eastpoint Mall. There were people standing in a line waiitng for their system.
But as luck would have it, me and my father went in a different side of the mall, going right to the place just after 11:30. And guess what...I WAS THE FIRST PERSON IN BALTIMORE TO GET A SEGA DREAMCAST!! That could never happen to me again...I'm telling you....
While I was console hunting to build up my collection, I had only managed to find one place who sold just one Dreamcast with everything, 70 for the console, controllers, MVU's, and they threw in all the DC games they had (a stack of 10) for free, because the console was there for quite a while apparently. I was so freaking lucky. Now if only I could find a Saturn...
Haha, I was waiting for you to mention Shenmue! That game was just a masterpiece. I get all teary when I listen to the songs from that game here on youtube.
lmao me too.. i was subbed to a guy who only put out shenmue vids for a while.. but he actually was putting out so many i couldnt view anything else in my sub box XD
the dream cast is what got me heavily into Online gaming and MMO's.. phantasy star online = my greatest memorys of gaming.. well that and shenmue makes me sad even thinking about them.
I love my dreamcast. I have the black sega sports one, bought it off my stepbrother for $10 before he moved out. A steal in my opinion. I plan to grow my DC collection very soon as its tiny. But the games for the DC are just amazing.
To quote many others, "The Dreamcast didn't fail us. We failed the Dreamcast."
I still have my dreamcast and it works Along with Some of the few best games for it. Such as Power stone 2 Sega collections 1 and grandia 2 there is more but thats just some
mate.. loved ur take on the dc.. .was very similar to a discussion u and i had some time ago... but yeh... for anyone out there who would like to find more info about the burning disc craze of 2001..do a google search for a Dreamcast feature called Mil-CD (that was how crackers got past the dc's security)
i saw one at microplay for about 30 or 40 dollars i think a while back but i didnt know if it was good or not. after seeing this video, ill be saure to keep an eye out for one.
well you should get into the whole online thing, or else you're going to be screwed. That's where this whole generation is going online. Amazon is probably the most reliable site you can find, I'd recommend that one.
i thought it was the fact that sega just couldnt afford to add a dvd player...they got a deal with yamaha to get the discount on the gd rom drives.. as one of the heads of sega would play gold with one of the heads of yamaha..
If Sega had went with the DVD DRIVE and DVD Format at the time. The cost of the Sega Dreamcast would of been almost as bad as the launch price of the Playstation 3 back in 2006. The Sega Dream cast was released over in Japan late 1998! At the time (1998, 1999), would anybody would want to spend over $500 for the Sega Dreamcast?

Randomaited 7 months ago
@Randomaited
The master system sold 13 million consoles while the NES sold 62 million. It didn't fail but it didn't hold a candle to the competition.
the N64 was outsold by 70 million consoles and was the beginning of Nintendo's 13 year slump.
The Saturn and the 7800 weren't even consoles of the same Gen. The Saturn competed with the PS1, which sold about 90 million more units worldwide.
I love Sega, but the fact is, they're consoles were never as popular as their main competitors.

The Dreamcast was and is an amazing system.I loved Sword of the Berserk also....and Shenmue was classic!

The wii has crappy 3rd party support why is it bestseller
videoking5567 2 years ago 2
I think because it has been a tradition of Nintendo consoles to have a better line of1st-party games than a line of 3rd-party games.

I think SEGA needs to realize the actual success it had with the Dreamcast.

powerstone was an immense game :D i never owned a DC but i knew a few people that had one and it was an amazing console. soul calibur using the fishing rod was amazing lmao
michaelalowther 2 years ago
I had a Dreamcast, but my cousin broke it. :( I didn't know that it was so easy to pirate the games though. I would get another Dreamcast, but they are expensive and hard to find.
skills2gunz 2 years ago
Not really, go on Ebay, I got the system and 2 games for £35 including shipping (the 2 games were shitty but oh well, they barley cost anything)
LeonSKennedy828 2 years ago
Good theory there. GD-ROM was a bad idea.
I still have a few Dreamcast games left and you can pop them in your PC and get bonus wallpapers and stuff :)

THere was actually something that wasn't true. The dreamcast wasn't the first home console that came with that modem and you could , go online with. Why because in 1997, Apple realeased a console called the Apple Pipin. It wasn't really popular though.
InktoPixels 2 years ago
Ah, the Pippin. I need one for my collection. There were less than 100,000 of those made!
The modems for the Pippin (14.4, 28.8, 33.6kbit/s) were sold separately and external. (Just confirmed it on the MacGeek Pippin FAQ) There were actually more of those manufactured than there were consoles. In 1996 they announced the Pippin and 28.8 modem bundle.
L1Games 2 years ago
But in that bundle, the modem was still external.
L1Games 2 years ago
So the DC was still the first console with a built in Modem
Also, I also point out in my video that prior home game consoles could go online (as far back as the 80's)

I was never able to get my hands on a Dreamcast, but I always played it at my friend's and it kicked major ass! Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, Soul Calibur, all great titles. I need to get a Dreamcast, if only for the nostalgia.
yazoo300 2 years ago
wow just considering how the dreamcast is WAY OBSOLETE by now, how does sony expect the PS3 to last 10 years!?!? im not dissing on the dreamcast but sony has to be realistic. imagine an xbox 720 or something like that in mehbe five years to blow the ps3 out of the water.... sony would definitely have to step up again right?

We failed the Dreamcast."

well you should get into the whole online thing, or else you're going to be screwed. That's where this whole generation is going online. Amazon is probably the most reliable site you can find, I'd recommend that one.

well first of all, the reason i dont like ordering online is that its kind of a hassle, and second, (message will continue in a PM)

Well they tried to add a dvd drive but it just kept on failing and so they decided not to add it.
sorwdofcho 2 years ago
i thought it was the fact that sega just couldnt afford to add a dvd player...they got a deal with yamaha to get the discount on the gd rom drives.. as one of the heads of sega would play gold with one of the heads of yamaha..
strictlysega 2 years ago
Is that the case? I had never heard that.
Either way, I think the DVD would have saved them. But, not as an add on. the last thing sega needed was another add on. LOL.
