Since watching this show I've always been curious, historically did Marcus Antonius "go native" when in Egypt as much as he did in this series? In my view in this he essentially became an opium addicted gigolo and I was wondering whether or not he remained more of his Roman culture and beliefs? I know it was a pretext for Octavian to go to war with him and he did want to divide the empire amongst his children after death but how true was the whole Egypt storyline of Antony's fall?
@Standuble Very likely. He was distrusted as a lecherous drunk with too little control over his temper and his brothers were worse. Even here, Octavian's seductress Cleopatra propaganda repeats. She was strong, intelligent and believed in her divine mandate as Pharoah to protect Egypt that none of her ancestors had given a damn about. As she saw, Antony was best Roman bet and once he defeated Octavian, either Egypt was a safe independent ally or Alexandria ruled the savages in Europe
@Saiaton I see thanks :) Before watching Rome I had perceived Antony as merely a bit of a fish out of water, a Roman soldier who got too close to a foreign queen. When watching Rome I was pleasantly surprised by the whole situation.
Cleopatra was extremely clever thats true. However even a short-sighted leader would think to be on good terms with a power which had enormously grown within only a few years, but only Cleo saw a way to make it so Rome would want her country to stay independent!
@Windspirit yep. it seems like no critics could see this, and all the other good performances. it went above their heads, the viewing public and mainstream critics are too shallow-minded
@jegspillerpiano : Rome was very critically acclaimed. The reason they had to shut it off was budget constraints. I guess whatever praise or financial success the series had could never make up for the budget and production losses. And when you take a look at how gorgeous the show looks and is, it's kind of understandable.
@Windspirit critically acclaimed where? Thge intellectual newspapers said some good things about it, but only in the details, their conclusion seemed to be 'it was trying to be too many things to too many people, and it did not add up to the sum of it parts'. As for the mainstream media - and i can give an example, the 'newsnight review' show in the UK - they simply hated it. For what it's worth, the Italians also said it "was not the Rome they recognize". Personally I think they're all wrong
Based on what I've seen from the images of old Roman coins with Mark Antony, I'm guessing the real Antony looked more rugged & masculine than James Purefoy. James Purefoy did a great job acting though. I love this series

@chirachi You mean the fall of Roman Republic and yes he is quite interesiting character I agree with you when in that and in series I would say he was better than Octavian XD
Marcus Antonius was ..not to be admired. But James Purefoy was at his best! Roman empire was not at its fall during those times-the transition from republic to dictatorship- it was just the beginning. Roman empire got its peak during the emperor Traianus (110 ad) A little history books will help beside the tv.. thanks
yeah the whole show was incredible...mark antony and lucius vorenus were my favorite characters...titus pullo also. Total badass the 3 of them.. 13!!!!
Antony was an outstanding Roman with a few flaws. Always remember that it was in Octavian's interest to rewrite history and make Antony the villarn. I think it does speak volumes that Caesar's other great nephews, one was Lucius Pinarius, fought with Antony until he went into a depression after Actium.
I loved "Rome" because of Pullo and Vorenus; at the end of the series I realized that I had to watch it all again because of ......J. Purefoy. His play is
In the golden oldie days of movies, James Purefoy would be movie star in the mold of Bill Holden, Greg Peck and others...handsome, rugged, he could do action, war, western, romance. Alas it is all scattershot these days. I liked him in Rome a lot. Very fine actor
Lucious such a stoic person while Antony falls in the life a debauchery at the end shame the battle of atium didn't turn out the other way but than again octavian made one of the best caesars.
Why would such an excellent commander on the field chose a naval battle to settle the question of dominance in the roman world? That one I will never understand.
The Ptolemaics had a powerful navy. Antony had but few legions loyal to him, and Cleopatra's Hellenistic mostly mercenary troops were exhausted after years of civil wars and were not a match for Octavian's legions. In fact, they could have won at Actium, if not for a series of disastrous decisions.
actually, it was mostly disease that doomed Antony at actium. He lost so many men to disease that he could not fully man his ships, which were of the much larger Deceres and quinquiereme class. Octavian had mostly smaller, faster triremes, which then out manuvered the larger, undermanned ships with ease.
This was great because he portrays Antony as both a good and bad kind of person. He's tough, honorable, passionate, but he's also a bit sick and sadistic, and at times even bloodthirsty. For me the best part about this series was the sets and costumes-about the closest I have ever seen anything come to what I picture Rome really looking like.

But To follow history , all must be considered! Stay away lad just yet from ROMANUS EMPORIUS . Seek the greeks 1st ,then all will follow.......
What I mean is, I didn't believe him for a second. He over baked every line and gesture. The rest of the cast particularly Polly Walker (Atia), Lindsay Duncan (Servila), Ciarán Hinds (Julius Caeser) and Tobias Menzies (Brutus) were awesome.
Who Antony?! No. Marc Antony was known as this passionate man, with passionate expression, emotion and love in his voice. That's why the director wanted him to deliver his apperance like that.
i notice as a student of roman history that when commanders lost a conflict they would better take their lives than to surrender but as the centuries move on they no longer use the practice of suicide and either flee or are taken.
I suppose it would have been better to die a commander than have an uncertain future death as maybe something less, and then there is honor, to die with your men, because maybe you feel responsible. The same way a captain goes down with his ship.
anthony great leader and general but he had really close mind. Why Caesar put him into Rome becous Anthony was iritated man and simply he made caesar angry. But Augustus best candidat for imperator of Rome he pushed Rome into new better era
Poor Antony. Just another great Roman. Forced into the vile game of politics. And he never made a good one either. He was meant to keep killing Gauls. To one of Rome's greatest generals.
Cleopatra was dysfunctional scum. Antony he was big, he was physical, good looking, he was fearless, a superb general and had the potential to do so much and he did. And now in the eyes of the Post Mortal Antony he wasn't remembered for all of his military campaigns in Gaul or helping Octavian rise to power (although he tried to stiffle him too) he was remembered as this fool who abandoned his troops and lost everything at Actium because he choose to follow his heart. That coward Cleopatra.
I disagree. The traditional story of Cleopatra was just Roman propaganda. We must not forget that she was an intellectual who spoke 9 languages; studied astronomy, mathematics, philosophy, etc. She elevated her bankrupt and decaying kingdom into a world superpower. She was a brilliant stateswomen and politician. The old myth that she fled Actium was just more Roman propaganda. Unfortunately as great a general Antony was, he did have shortcomings and became addicted to luxury and self indulgence.
She was intelligent and a great politician. But no, no! She was a dysfunctional woman. She had sex with her brother. And a superpower I would say not. The only way her country survived was by the assistance and generosity of Caesar and Rome. And if you watch the show and see these historians talk on the commentaries of the DVD they acknowledge that she did indeed flee Actium. Antony was the better general and probably could've won if it hadn't been for her.
Well, we can certainly agree Cleopatra came from a dysfunctional family ... perhaps the most dysfunctional family in recorded history! Did she have sex with her brother - royal incest was the norm in Egypt - probably not. I have extrapolated what I know from reading a dozen biographies, those by Lucy Hughes-Hallett and Michael Grant come to mind. Was Cleopatra ambitious, ruthless, scheming ... yes! But she was attempting to elevate her kingdom and dynasty - via a high stakes gamble.
And Antony was always self indulgent. From the beginning. But that's not what brought him down. He was just being destroyed by the life and culture of Egypt and Cleopatra. He lost because he choose his heart over his men and you see that in the last episode that he was really regretting it. And how great was Cleopatra if she abandoned Antony to live and then it was all for nothing? At least Antony died by his own sword, and didn't have some slave do it.
Cleopatra wasn't as much of the problem as Antony. He had a reputation as a drunken womanizer who liked to dress up as Hercules. When Octavian busted into the Temple of Vesta and read Antony's will that left the unconquered Persian Empire to he and Cleopatra's kids and bestowed great honors upon Egypt and Cleopatra, the Roman people were furious
Yes I'll admit Antony was notorious for having this reckless streak. But that's the point. A guy like him was never meant to govern Egypt or be any kind of politician for that matter. He was meant to be cracking Gallic heads with a sword, and quelling riots and revolts with his soldiers. Because that's how he acted like a rowdy, drunken, adulterating soldier. That's where he should've been. Not meet some crazy woman, fall in love, and die for it.
Marc Antony has been unfairly vilified by historians who form opinions based on Augustan propaganda--of course Antony is going to come off as an incompetent drunkard and lunk-head!
Very true. Just like the Roman propaganda that made Cleopatra out to be some kind of whore, when really she seems to have had only two lovers in her whole life: Caesar and Antony.
To me, Mark Antony should of won the final civil war of the Republic... He was far greater than Octavian who was a coward, always had his Agrippa do everything for him. Agrippa should of been first Emperor not Octavian.
"Augustus' reign laid the foundations of a regime that lasted hundreds of years until the ultimate decline of the Roman Empire. Both his borrowed surname, Caesar, and his title Augustus became the permanent titles of the rulers of Roman Empire for fourteen centuries after his death, in use both at Old Rome and New Rome. In many languages, caesar became the word for emperor, as in the German Kaiser and in the Bulgarian and subsequently Russian Tsar."
This show portrayed Augustus as a coward. In realisty he was ruthless as Octavius, but once he became Augustus he changed the Roman Empire into something far greater than it had ever been before and his legacy lasted until the very end of the Roman Empire itself. We will never know what Mark Anthony would have done, but I think it VERY VERY unlikely he would have done better. But both as well as Ceaser are all inspirational!
True that. But Antony did many great things for Rome. Caesar could have never successfully conquered Gaul with out Antony. And Octavian could've never defeated Brutus with out Antony's help. Caesar and Augustus were the better men, but Antony did some great things for all it was worth.
james purefoy is incredibly sexy, but that is not why i loved him as antony.
he just captured everything so perfectly, specifically antony's behaviour towards the end of his life. the frustration and the sorrow... this video really made me cry, i'm not even lying. his performance was just amazing.
i applaud he and lyndsey marshall for being everything i hoped for in antony and cleopatra.
ya james was perfect as mark antony it sucks that he had to die personally i would have rather had octavian die since he was such a dick and antony win in the end
They ruined Agustus completely, made him out to be a coward when he was actually an amazing part of history. Whether people like it or not, all great men are ruthless, otherswise they wouldn't have had that drive to succeed would they?
Augustus was the more cerebral--not much of a man of action. He let Agrippa and later Gemanicus, do the physical side of maintaining and expanding the empire. Augustus was a wily politician, unlike Antony, who embraced the Dionysus cult of excess and was a supremely competent general who happened to place his trust in fey allies (e.g. Titus and Dallius). Who knows what would have happened had Antony never met Cleopatra? Or even if he and Cleopatra had triumphed at Actium?
He had in his veins the blood of the juliis, but that of the Antoniis was prevailing. All the Antoniis were impetuos, superficials and lustfuls, for this Cesar did not choose him as his heir but the young Octavian. His fate was signed.
Yes Caesar knew from the moment he asked Octavian for advice in his empire that he would be the one to carry out his work once he died. Caesar did not choose him as heir on a whim.
Well they did make him seem evil. But truth be told. Augustus was more of a thinker, than a general. And Antony a general than a thinker. Antony could have won, if that Gypo Cunt hadn't cost him everything at Actium. But you're right Augustus was made to be this heartless monster and every great leader before and after him mustn't let their own feelings get in the way but use good judgment which is what he did, and which eventually lead to Antony destruction.
Addendum ... I wish I could find a video of the entire scene of him getting bathed in the courtyard! This was a reminder and a tease! Thanks again! He is just beautiful. Yum! ;)
This man is amazingly hot. He was the ONLY reason I watched EVERY episode of Rome!! Toby Stephens, Rupert Penry-Jones, James Purefoy... I say again.. What do they put in the water over there to make men this AMAZING??

We must not forget that she was an intellectual who spoke 9 languages; studied astronomy, mathematics, philosophy, etc. She elevated her bankrupt and decaying kingdom into a world superpower. She was a brilliant stateswomen and politician. The old myth that she fled Actium was just more Roman propaganda. Unfortunately as great a general Antony was, he did have shortcomings and became addicted to luxury and self indulgence.
buddmar 3 years ago 5
She was intelligent and a great politician. But no, no! She was a dysfunctional woman. She had sex with her brother. And a superpower I would say not. The only way her country survived was by the assistance and generosity of Caesar and Rome. And if you watch the show and see these historians talk on the commentaries of the DVD they acknowledge that she did indeed flee Actium. Antony was the better general and probably could've won if it hadn't been for her.
Dillestman 3 years ago

Dillestman 3 years ago
Cleopatra wasn't as much of the problem as Antony. He had a reputation as a drunken womanizer who liked to dress up as Hercules. When Octavian busted into the Temple of Vesta and read Antony's will that left the unconquered Persian Empire to he and Cleopatra's kids and bestowed great honors upon Egypt and Cleopatra, the Roman people were furious
tachikoma747 3 years ago
Yes I'll admit Antony was notorious for having this reckless streak. But that's the point. A guy like him was never meant to govern Egypt or be any kind of politician for that matter. He was meant to be cracking Gallic heads with a sword, and quelling riots and revolts with his soldiers. Because that's how he acted like a rowdy, drunken, adulterating soldier. That's where he should've been. Not meet some crazy woman, fall in love, and die for it.

What the people remembered of Marcus Antonius Cretus?
He was a skilled general, a brave warrior, an elegant orator, but all the people remember him only as a handsome viril man.
xilpix 3 years ago 2
In every way, Gaius Cesar Octavianus was a genius, nobody would have been able to stop him to realize his plans.
he was also was very beautiful with blond hairs and clear eyes, he seemed an angel and he also used his look to fascinate the people.

Marc Antony has been unfairly vilified by historians who form opinions based on Augustan propaganda--of course Antony is going to come off as an incompetent drunkard and lunk-head!
cleogurl12 3 years ago 3
Very true. Just like the Roman propaganda that made Cleopatra out to be some kind of whore, when really she seems to have had only two lovers in her whole life: Caesar and Antony.

when u have a lover as Caeser and a son from him you do not want to have another lover.. she was a whore

To me, Mark Antony should of won the final civil war of the Republic... He was far greater than Octavian who was a coward, always had his Agrippa do everything for him. Agrippa should of been first Emperor not Octavian.
mafiabrett 3 years ago
Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus was a greates.
AlexanderDiArmani 3 years ago
This show portrayed Augustus as a coward. In realisty he was ruthless as Octavius, but once he became Augustus he changed the Roman Empire into something far greater than it had ever been before and his legacy lasted until the very end of the Roman Empire itself. We will never know what Mark Anthony would have done, but I think it VERY VERY unlikely he would have done better. But both as well as Ceaser are all inspirational!
d89gr 3 years ago
True that. But Antony did many great things for Rome. Caesar could have never successfully conquered Gaul with out Antony. And Octavian could've never defeated Brutus with out Antony's help. Caesar and Augustus were the better men, but Antony did some great things for all it was worth.

james purefoy is incredibly sexy, but that is not why i loved him as antony.
he just captured everything so perfectly, specifically antony's behaviour towards the end of his life. the frustration and the sorrow... this video really made me cry, i'm not even lying. his performance was just amazing.
i applaud he and lyndsey marshall for being everything i hoped for in antony and cleopatra.

damn great actor he was perfect for mark antoni can't say the same for the guys they got for augustus
histatimaniples 3 years ago
They ruined Agustus completely, made him out to be a coward when he was actually an amazing part of history. Whether people like it or not, all great men are ruthless, otherswise they wouldn't have had that drive to succeed would they?
d89gr 3 years ago 2
Augustus was the more cerebral--not much of a man of action. He let Agrippa and later Gemanicus, do the physical side of maintaining and expanding the empire. Augustus was a wily politician, unlike Antony, who embraced the Dionysus cult of excess and was a supremely competent general who happened to place his trust in fey allies (e.g. Titus and Dallius). Who knows what would have happened had Antony never met Cleopatra? Or even if he and Cleopatra had triumphed at Actium?
cleogurl12 3 years ago
He had in his veins the blood of the juliis, but that of the Antoniis was prevailing. All the Antoniis were impetuos, superficials and lustfuls, for this Cesar did not choose him as his heir but the young Octavian. His fate was signed.
xilpix 3 years ago
Yes Caesar knew from the moment he asked Octavian for advice in his empire that he would be the one to carry out his work once he died. Caesar did not choose him as heir on a whim.

I suppose "great" is a matter of negligible opinion, eh? Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Ludwig von Mises--- these were great men.
seanettlesoup 3 years ago
Well they did make him seem evil. But truth be told. Augustus was more of a thinker, than a general. And Antony a general than a thinker. Antony could have won, if that Gypo Cunt hadn't cost him everything at Actium. But you're right Augustus was made to be this heartless monster and every great leader before and after him mustn't let their own feelings get in the way but use good judgment which is what he did, and which eventually lead to Antony destruction.
