A French writer's book put on sale recently has disclosed another side, including opportunism and tricks, of the Dalai Lama deified by some Western politicians and armchair pundits.
Maxime Vivas's new book "Not So 'Zen': The Hidden Side Of The Dalai Lama" hit the shelves of bookstores and online retailers Thursday, days after the Dalai Lama himself held a three-day public conference in the southern French city Toulouse.
Facts and views in the 130-page French-language book refute the long-time self-beatification of the Dalai Lama.
"Based on the word of the Dalai Lama in his transcribed memoirs and also in his speeches during his trips abroad, Maxime Vivas highlights opportunism, omissions, tricks, and lies of a man and his kingdom," the publisher Max Milo Editions said in a press kit.
"In a plea for secularism, the author raises the question of what would be a 'Free Tibet' led by a recalcitrant prophet in front of science and freedom of worship," the publisher said, while presenting a briefing of a feudal system decades ago under the Dalai Lama and the free primary education system in today's Tibet that is significantly bringing down the illiteracy rate.
"The trend in France is mostly to edit mass books praising the Dalai Lama. Writing against the Dalai Lama or breaking his image is akin to smearing the portraits of Nelson Mandela or Mahatma Gandhi, the idols which we can't touch," Vivas told Xinhua.
Confusion-and-curiosity-driven, Vivas conducted a truth-seeking trip to Tibet in the summer of 2010 with several other French journalists.
He found there is a modern Tibet prospering with free prayers in temples and monasteries and even on the streets, and Tibetan-written signs are everywhere.
"What I saw in Tibet is not like what I read from the French press and books," he said.
To clarify the contradiction of the real Tibet he witnessed and the one in the Dalai Lama's propaganda and most Western reports, Vivas read numerous documents, including studies of French parliamentarians, and researched opinions from various angles.
"This book is not based on documentation of the opponents of the Dalai Lama, not documentation of the Chinese authorities," he said. "But the information I have drawn from speeches, lectures, interviews and memoirs of the Dalai Lama, and also with his followers ..."
The book with the Dalai Lama's photo on the cover is now on the bookshelves of Fnac, the largest retailer of cultural and electronic products in France, and in the book category of U.S.-based Amazon.com, the world's largest online retailer.
There have been many comments about the book on the Internet.
Some pointed out the double status of the Dalai Lama mixing political with religious faces.
"However the truth is, he is not actually the person he appears to be. His actions have not always been in accordance with his message of peace, tolerance and compassion..." a netizen named "Caz Namyaw" commented.
The book also has drawn attention from the French media including TV5, bfm radio and France info, among others.
Showing footage of a regional TV channel's interview on the book, Vivas pointed out several illogical arguments posed by some French media, which he said questioned him on the basis of prejudgment rather than the content of his book.
Vivas also said he didn't believe in the Dalai Lama's March announcement of handing over political power because he since met U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House in July.
@hjkl12313 I'm honestly no expert on this subject, but I was under the impression that it was a feudal society, with the lamas as land owners. I realise the flaws of feudalism such as vastly uneven distribution of wealth, but with the lack of free speech and the poor standard of living for Tibetans, wouldn't a feudal society be better than chinese rule? There was historically alot of violence in Tibet, much like the religious wars in Europe, but isn't freedom is to high a price to pay for peace?
@TibetRox aka Gavin Life in Tibet is very good for Tibetans because His Holy Less the Da Lie Lama's sorry old ass has been kicked out by the Tibetans who were fed up by his brutal serfdom
The ignorant and idiot westerners do not want to know or do not want to acknowledge the fact that before 1949, all people living in Tibet are slaves of Dalai Lama.
if tibetans want independence give them! chinese have no right to occupy and force onto them sth that they advocate as doing for good - such as modernization. Tibet was and still should be regarded as sovereign nation. if that's their mission, it is better to lend it to UK, which can obviously handle both the people and the economy of tibet better than chinese empire bent on world dominance. recall how UK did to hong kong. chinese mission statement is total boolsh*t.
@1081617 yes, then native indians in America claims that America once belong to them, and they want it back, then why not give it to them, and all the white move back to where u came from, if so we can ask China to give independence to Tibet.....
I rem there is an old chinese saying, don't ask other ppl to do something u also don't want.
@XIVDALAILAMA my problem is with China and it's policy to annex every piece of land it possibly can and destroy it's native culture. Be is Tibet or Xinxiang or southern part of Mongalia. It claims Taiwan, entire South China sea and Arunanchal Pradesh... all this destroys the peace in it's neighbourhood and world. China is the most immature and irresponsible nation I can see. Luckily, India has got strong enough to contain china and it's illegitimate dreams.
LIES!!!!! and if you show footage of tibetans getting beatup be an man and show the full footage where you first see those (fake) monks cuts up han chinese ppl with machetties and roll over an chinese coverment truck and burn the driver alive why dont you american coverment puppept show that
why dont you show the temples with FAT monks insite living from donation of the villigers
Before 1949 Tibet was a feudalistic theocracy with harsh social disparities. Compare the GDP per capita, life expectancy, literacy rate, and level of infrastructure as well as foreign investment with modern Tibet and 1949 Tibet. If Tibet were ever to become an independent state it would be a landlocked country, Tibet may have lost elements of its spirituality but to view this solely is a very shallow analysis. Its not like Tibetan Buddhism is forbidden, monks are free to practice their religion.
No one I know of, including HHDL, denies that Tibet was a feudal society before the Chinese civil war. HHDL was a teenager at that time, one could hardly blame him, and he has been extraordinarily democratic and pluralist since (unlike the CCP). I have NEVER heard a negative word about him from Tibetan acquaintances or anyone who has known him, and Tibetans in their homeland obviously love him and their religious tradition, but racist Han Chinese prefer to agree with the CCP party propaganda.
I've known quite a few college educated Chinese doing graduate work or research at Yale university. It's utterly dismaying to hear a Chinese say that s/he's afraid of the Communist government and other Chinese in America who might report on them, that the government lies -- and then in the next breath they repeat the very propaganda on Tibet put out by their government! I had one Chinese friend who turned down an offer to go to a Tibetan Festival, because he was afraid he could get in trouble.
if you are american, look what you did to indians and aferican americans. look what you did to iraq and iran. you still think you have the right to judge Chinese? if you are not american, why dont you correct the US first. ppl are the same.
and dont buy Chinese? good, cuz your country will fall down first. do you know that when Chinese made 1 dime from crafting, your country sell it to earn 10? there is a reason that most of the goods says made in China.
Good lie! So moving! You should add something, like how many slave does Dalai , his monk, his government and old Tibetan nobles keep? Compared with normal Tibetan's live, what kind of live is he living. Do forget to mention that from a long long long long long time ago, to become a Dalai Lama need the recognition of central government. Communism took over the central government and wanted to end this inequality so you ran away! I love Tibet but I do not love Dalai Lama.
@newbornaspro I do not say monks are slaves... Dalai and old Tibetan nobles kept slaves. If people born in slave families, they are slaves. I did not see anything wrong with ending this unfair system. I do not blame him for his past because he was chosen to be Dalai Lama. But he lied about under his rule, what was Tibet was like. He describes it as a heaven! Yes, maybe a heaven to him and all these privileged class.
@msckitten Are u saying that King of china never had a slave. Dalai Lama got slave, but they r realy happy to work for him. It would be the happiest thing for me to work for him!!!!!!!!!!¨¨ PEACE
@newbornaspro No, I did not say that. But China has not been a slavery society since 255 BC. Ancient Chinese society had many problems but slave holding is not included. I just simply cannot understand a slavery society in 20th century. But if the slaves are happy to work for him and so are you, then I have no problem. If all Tibetan and people live in Tibet want their old life back, they deserve it.
@newbornaspro And they should fight back, at least do as Indian did in the past. Refuse to use Chinese government's fund and supply. Refuse to use Chinese-built transportation system. Refuse to use Chinese education system. Refuse everything Chinese. After they leave, Chinese should also take away everything they put in Tibet. That is fair. WOW, it is such a brilliant idea!
@newbornaspro By the way, if he still remembered how he was chosen to be Dalai Lama, he should remember the system of choosing to be Dalai was made by Emperor Qianlong (who is also from another race of all Chinese races) long time before communism was 'invented'. To say Tibet is a country before 1949 is a lie and Dalai knows. If he is going to live like a religious leader, please abusing peoples' belief in him and spreading lies. Moreover as a Buddhist I do not have religious problem!

Save Tibet? I will. Not only I but also You. How? I make myself a good cup of Tibetan tea and I will drink it. Mniam, mniaaammm, mnniam, very good taste. You do the same, okay. Just relax and do nothing. Get into harmony with the Way ( Tao ) and your troubles will abandon you, all difficulties go away. Others will not interfere in your business and you can change your life. You cannot change others karma. Only your own. And this sounds good. Your illness will go away. Now is night and I see moon.
These fucking bastards Chinese have border issues with all of his neighboring country (except 17th century muzzie land Pakistan). Why they keep taking somebody's land (like Tibet) even though they have a huge nation with large land area? Fucking bastards. China is also encouraging and supporting nuclear programs for Iran, North Korea, plus they have anti-US policy all the time. UN and western allies should attack such country who create / supports WW III like scenario.
Please someone explain to me how boycotting products from China will free Tibet. I would think it would do more harm in general. If you want to make an impact, I would suggest mass emails and telephone calls to political leaders who we can trust and who can further spread the word amongst government ranks to make some sort of movement toward freeing Tibet.
If you buy made in China you are feeding the machinery of oppression. If you know anyone who buys soft plastic toys for their children from china tell them to read about Phthalates on
en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Phthalate (remove spaces)
.
Tests done in Europe showed that 100% of 1700 children tested had toxic substances in their system.
US and rest of west are very short-sighted indeed. In search of quick cheap profits, the western companies have invested heavily in china, to manufacture cheap goods, at the expense of jobs at home! These lying capitalist/shits, who are the last people to have any patriotic feelings, are out selling the future of our children for quick money. So, what do you make of that?
Western companies and chinese manufacturers hide the made in china logos, sometimes its not displayed at all. If not, then ask the seller where the goods are made. Boycot chinese made goods, it's only filling pockets of Top Honchos of Communist/captialist party.
So your genius plan to saving Tibetan culture is to not buy Chinese? It would be one thing if Tibetans were slaves producing goods, which China sold, but to not buy Chinese goods will in no way revive Tibetan culture(essentially Buddhism).Even if you could convince the entire country to stop buying Chinese-made goods,China would only have to exploit Tibet's resources even more.So what is your plan? Not buy Chinese goods, thus make the Chinese government so poor they have to withdraw fromTibet
The Whole WORLD needs to help Tibetens, who are suffering such brutal suppression, near enough a genocide, in their own country!
Just think, if that was happening to us? Our neighbouring country, having invaded us, wanted to change our very culture, make us slaves, and kill anyone who opposed it?
Think of days of Hitler and the Nazies, that is exactly what they were trying to do in Europe!
Stop buying chinese goods now. Next time check where a product is made b4 buying.
China ll fall with their own errors. Tibet were part of former India before 1700 century. free Tibet.

ShigleySheila 1 month ago

There was historically alot of violence in Tibet, much like the religious wars in Europe, but isn't freedom is to high a price to pay for peace?

if tibetans want independence give them! chinese have no right to occupy and force onto them sth that they advocate as doing for good - such as modernization. Tibet was and still should be regarded as sovereign nation. if that's their mission, it is better to lend it to UK, which can obviously handle both the people and the economy of tibet better than chinese empire bent on world dominance. recall how UK did to hong kong. chinese mission statement is total boolsh*t.

XIVDALAILAMA 2 months ago
@XIVDALAILAMA my problem is with China and it's policy to annex every piece of land it possibly can and destroy it's native culture. Be is Tibet or Xinxiang or southern part of Mongalia. It claims Taiwan, entire South China sea and Arunanchal Pradesh... all this destroys the peace in it's neighbourhood and world. China is the most immature and irresponsible nation I can see. Luckily, India has got strong enough to contain china and it's illegitimate dreams.
rahulm1987 2 months ago
@rahulm1987
India came into possession of South Tibet by courtesy of England when it granted gandhi independence in 1951.
It was never a part of India. The 6th Dalai Lama, which was me, was born there.
Uighurs, Tibetans, Mongolians, Manchurians, Japanese, English, indians and French have all invaded China.
May China be your proplem for the rest of your dying days.

Good lie! I love Tibet but I do not love Dalai Lama.

newbornaspro 3 months ago
@newbornaspro I do not say monks are slaves... Dalai and old Tibetan nobles kept slaves. If people born in slave families, they are slaves. I did not see anything wrong with ending this unfair system. I do not blame him for his past because he was chosen to be Dalai Lama. But he lied about under his rule, what was Tibet was like. He describes it as a heaven! Yes, maybe a heaven to him and all these privileged class.
msckitten 3 months ago
@msckitten Are u saying that King of china never had a slave. Dalai Lama got slave, but they r realy happy to work for him. It would be the happiest thing for me to work for him!!!!!!!!!!¨¨ PEACE
newbornaspro 3 months ago
@newbornaspro No, I did not say that. But China has not been a slavery society since 255 BC. Ancient Chinese society had many problems but slave holding is not included. I just simply cannot understand a slavery society in 20th century. But if the slaves are happy to work for him and so are you, then I have no problem. If all Tibetan and people live in Tibet want their old life back, they deserve it.
msckitten 3 months ago
@newbornaspro And they should fight back, at least do as Indian did in the past. Refuse to use Chinese government's fund and supply. Refuse to use Chinese-built transportation system. Refuse to use Chinese education system. Refuse everything Chinese. After they leave, Chinese should also take away everything they put in Tibet. That is fair. WOW, it is such a brilliant idea!
msckitten 3 months ago
@newbornaspro By the way, if he still remembered how he was chosen to be Dalai Lama, he should remember the system of choosing to be Dalai was made by Emperor Qianlong (who is also from another race of all Chinese races) long time before communism was 'invented'. To say Tibet is a country before 1949 is a lie and Dalai knows. If he is going to live like a religious leader, please abusing peoples' belief in him and spreading lies. Moreover as a Buddhist I do not have religious problem!

So, what do you make of that?
markwessex 1 year ago
Western companies and chinese manufacturers hide the made in china logos, sometimes its not displayed at all. If not, then ask the seller where the goods are made. Boycot chinese made goods, it's only filling pockets of Top Honchos of Communist/captialist party.
markwessex 1 year ago
