I put a dimmer switch inline to a step-down transformer allowing me to control the wire "temperature". Using stainless steel fishing wire, strung it across the board, shimming it for thickness as required. Turn on the transformer, wire gets hot, slide the foam down across the wire. Putting baby powder on the board helps the foam slide evenly, not skipping. Use a weight of sort on the foam, just enough to slide it at the right speed thru practice.
Very good. You got my subscription! Very interesting of having the table on an angle, therefore the pressure on the wire is constant. Please explain the process.
It was actually just a bit of trial and error, making do with what I had on hand. Just laid an old bi-fold door panel against my bench, took a piece of plywood to use as a weight, etc. Ended up being too light, glued some bolts onto it to add more weight. Just adjusted the wire temp with the dimmer switch to what I felt was a good cutting speed that also gave good results.
Very clever and simple. thanks

what type of foam are u using?

good video, thanks, i was wondering if you cut foam from the top or bottom, now i know. i like the tilted table also.

Works pretty slick, I use it quite often making skins for panels on some of my models.

You could just use an AC train transformer and it would eliminate the need for the dimmer and you might alrady have one lying around the house.

The dimmer works great, no problems.

Its a stainless steel fishing leader wire, (uncoated). The power source is a 120v to 12 volt transformer, homemade.
Xan2k 3 years ago
how much voltage you send to it? ( could you tell whats the thickness of the wire you use also?) thanks for all the help :)
go0dkat 3 years ago
12 volts only. A car battery charger works well too.
The wire is .036 I believe, or .020 for thinner cuts.

i would be a great help to know the specs of the wire and the current needed to do it :)

Great! can you show us how to build the machine you used to cut the foam?
