  • isn't it horrible how there's virtually nothing with lisbeth balslev?

  • Simob at his very best and Lisbeth simply wonderful

  • My very favorite Dutchman--Simon and Lisbeth are simply wonderful!!

  • First of all I do not like the work of Wagner very much. But more than that this re-staging his opera's to make ist look fresh or whatever does not do a good job. These are people on a boat for god's sake. It's not a grand gala at a palace.

  • i live in germany since im 5 years old but i dont understand a word he says.

  • Ich auch nich :)

  • bellissimo questo finale..davvero impressionante...x non parlare delle voci bravissimi tutti senta in particolare bella voce di lirico spinto

  • Does anyone, upload "Wie aus der ferne..."

    please!

    kupfer's stage directions are good.

  • No redemption for you at Bayreuth.

  • See also the one with Nina Stemme. :DDD

    Simon Estes is so hot...

  • Yes he is. What a body and a voice

  • Completely against what Wagner wrote! Senta sacrifices herself to save him and.... she just dies, and he remains cursed and alone! No hope, no salvation through love! Stupid new Baureuth trash!!!

  • According to the original stage directions,

    translated into English,

"She leaps into the sea; at once the Dutch ship sinks with all her crew. The sea heaves and falls in a whirlpool. In the glow of the rising sun, the transfigured forms of the Dutchman and Senta, clasped in each other's arms, are seen rising over the wreck and soaring into the sky."

So yes, they really do gain salvation.

  • Of course they gain salvation, that's what Wagner wrote. But where is all that in THIS staging from Wagner's own theatre?

  • Oh! I see what you mean... yes, it's never shown in this version is it? Ugh.

  • That's the point! Senta is imagining eveything in this version and killing herself for nothing but her way out of the narrowness of her society.

  • @Dinarrra84 I think you're dumbing things down. To me, there's more negative capability than that. Senta's dream might be the gateway to a parallel universe or just be a figment of her imagination. At the end, we don't know whether she killed herself for nothing or not. The only thing we can be sure of is her ecstasy in dying for something infinitely beautiful and greater than herself. Might not be what Kupfer intended, but who cares? Art can yield more meaning than the artist intends.

  • At first: Wagner himself said: "Kinder, macht Neues" - meaning: "Children, make something new". He himself said after the Ring in 1876: "If I get the chance again, I´ll do everything in different ways." Stop arguing about how close the interpretation is to the original score of staging. Every time has to deal with opera and theatre in its own way. Otherwise you´ll just get a museum.

  • But then you get those eurotrash productions like the Barber of Seville were everyone kills each other. I just didn't like it. The end looked like it switched sets with Peter Grimes. You can't change a classic piece of art without ruining it. I think stage directors have taken modernization a bit too far.

  • There is as much AmericoTrash as there is EuroTrash. Some AmericoTrash is good, some isnt. Samething for the Eurotrash. Kupfer is way to passe to be trendy Eurotrash. If you call him Eurotrash, might as well call Wagner that too :) But watching this has made me remember how awesome (excuse the Americotrash expression) this production was in Bayreuth. It was so exciting both musically and visually - no wonder it was such a hit with the audience. Eurotrash or not, it was great opera!
