why is a new born on shavings? Mares should always foal on straw not shavings as they can cause a lot of problems. It is cute, but mom should have the right to be there for the bonding period.

@cetrojans519 I agree with the shaveings causeing problems. But the mom was there the whole time infact you can see her tail hairs for alot of the move and her head comes around at the end. Not all mares stick to thier babies when they are born. Some of them get up and walk away right away and make the baby stand faster and folllow.

Mom was right there. They do not actually help, the baby has to do this on his own. Sometimes, it may take longer than a human wants it, but every baby is different, they know what to do. Hey, those long legs take a bit to get used to!

@CryingMoonShade They are more flexible when they are just born than an adult horse so it does not hurt them when they do the splits like that. Their ligaments and tendons can be pretty loose for the first few days. It would help this baby to have more bedding, notice how you can see the floor in places, but even then they do fall in ways that can be shocking the first time you see it. I bet this guy was just fine.
