Well, we know for a fact that they've known about it since at least series 3, cos in The Last Day, Lister's like "Don't give me the Star Trek crap, it's too early in the morning." So this isn't the first reference to that show. Plus, it's not like this is in some alternate reality where Star Trek didn't exist - it's just the same universe but a couple centuries into the future! So they'd most likely have seen Star Trek, or at least have heard about it :P

@SorokChyetirye that's because lister was in stasis for 3 million years but the actual characters themselves: lister, rimmer and the rest of the crew are from the 23rd century
