@SKPvideo Maybe not specifically in Blender, however, particle system software technology goes back to the 1980s. Softimage definitely had particle systems in their creative environment V2.6, which was available in 1993.
@Spoif ... Well - if you read the description - these were made with BLENDER... and as I said - no particle system back then. And yes - I'm aware of softimage - my exposure to animation goes all the way back to the ORIGINAL lightwave that was distributed with the Amiga Video Toaster system... and before that - D-Paint and it's 2D animation... and before that - during the early 80s - when I was a small child - it was using refresh rates on the Adam to create "2D Animations" in BASIC...
@2001urchm I have no idea what you're talking about... a minute to introduce myself??? If you're referring to the length of the piece - you obviously didn't read the notes that went with this. This video is NOT my demo reel for the purpose of getting a job. I have a job doing this sort of thing and have been doing it for many years. This video was merely a love letter to the 10 year progress of Blender software. I don't find it boring...;)
@2001urchm - not to mention... that whole first minute - IT'S MY ANIMATIONS... Kinda like a movie - they play the credits over the opening sequence oftentimes... ;)
@TheFXGuy Actually it does... they don't number them like you'd think they would have. we had 1.8, 2.0, 2.1, 2.14, 2.31, 2.32, 2.34, and on and on... I have dozens and dozens and dozens of diffferent versions over the years...
As the text description says...most of these were done over ten years ago. When I uploaded the files a while back to youtube -I uploaded in what was then their highest allowable resolution. The originals were done at standard NTSC resolution. As far as "ruining" my reel - this is NOT a demo reel for a job - I already have a job doing this...
This was merely a personal video showing the different things I was able to achieve many years ago with the software blender... Thanks for the interest tho. ;)
@daltonmills Thank you. it was a very simple effect. I did a quick "painting" of a galaxy in Gimp - then used it as a texture on a simple circle mesh in Blender. by using a few circle meshes in staggered and rotated positions I got the multi-layered star galaxy effect. I found the rendering times lightening fast as opposed to using particles or other methods. (additionally - I had each circle mesh doing a slight rotation to get the "whirlpool" effect)
Most defintely. Video is simply a series of stills... ;) You can also do fairly large resolution renders - so the amount of detail it is possible to add to a piece is simply scary phenomenal.

In response to Bleenderhead; I have seen Elephant's Dream. But what I meant was Blender isn't exactly the best program to make photorealistic CG to integrate into Live Action Film. I've seen examples and they're not good.
Blender is good to create CG for a CG cartoon. I believe Maya is wasted on cartoons like Jimmy Neutron. But Maya has magnificent shaders that they need, which Blender can't come close to.
im not saying other programs dont have some sweet features, but the program is only as good as the user whether its maya, zbrush, or blender. theres going to be a flood of amateur content from blender for the simple fact its completely free.
Did anyone read the text description of this video - most of this work was done several YEARS ago with a version of blender that had no raytracing, no ao, no gi, no shaders - everything was smoke and mirrors.
As far as saying that blender cant do this or that - bull**it. It's just a tool. A carpenter uses more than his hammer anyway. in the end - the talent of the artist is what makes a good picture. And as a fan of blender from the very BEGINNING - I'm amazed and impressed with how far it's come.
Amazed enough that after a few years using blender - when the company faced abkruptcy and it looked like blender would be lost forever - I - like thousands of other dedicated users - donated money to "buy" back the rights to blender so it could be open-sourced. It was the best money I ever spent! ;)
Back in the early 90s I cut my chops on lightwave which was just a small part of the Amiga Video toaster platform. When I think of what we had to do back then as opposed to the simplicity of now - WOW... ;)
Man, have you seen Elephant's dream? Or Big Buck Bunny? They're right here on youtube, search them. Photorealism can be achieved in blender. Look at the blenderartists forum gallery for instance.
Blender isn't exactly the best software to use if you want Photorealistic scenery. Im not downing his work here. He did a good job.
Notice how a lot of his shots had to use a form of distraction like bright lights or very dark nights almost to the point where they look like a silhouette or hazing afternoon outside shots to where they almost look foggy.
These are distraction you have to use in order for people not to notice that Blender can not output good photorealistic or detailed textures.
He just didn't have any GI or ambient occlusion turned on, though it is a feature. It takes longer to render, but you can achieve all of that in blender. Seriously have a look at Elephant's Dream or Creature Factory.
this is amazing. How did you get it to work - my blender often crashes or fails to work - i installed python but it is still being fussy. What was the book called that you used - i would like to find it ^^

five stars brother. Very cool, nice work. I've been learning Blender for 6 months now and it is awesome. Once you get past the learning curve in the beginning it is unlimited what can be done.
In most cases they were just layered images of clouds and skies... individual groups of clouds saved with an alpha channel and layered in on a sky mesh. Old school blender...
i'm a pro Softimage|xsi user! and i have total respect for what blender has can offer! its just the UI and shortct keys need to get used to! its very unuseuall from the other platforms i worked with be4
I hope I can be constructive in my criticism. It appears that you know how to use Terragen and PlantStudio, but wizard-generated content will be ignored by studios. The castle and living room interiors look promising, but the lighting is too monotone (use AO and a few more shadow-casting lightsources). Detailed modeling, texturing, ighting and camera work are what they look at. Avoid using stock models like the statue of liberty. Create points of focus in each scene, not just landscapes.
Didn't use PlantStudio - Terragen was only used for one shot - and in the end I didn't even use the landscape - I used the atmosphere. This "demo" was not done for the purpose of "getting a job." I already have a job. The sequences in these videos are shots that were done many years ago. I put the videos up mainly to show what the blender software was capable of doing back when it was first developed (no raytrace, no nodes, etc). Thanks for the comments tho.
google Softimage and then go to the first one- go products then go Mod free download, that allows u to put models from Hl, Hl2 and valve games into it, edit them like blender or create ur own, maps models and games practicaly, U can even export 3ds or blender files into it and use them in the game!
Yes blender can make games, but it's complicated and requires learning the python scripting language to make anything more advanced than a Super Mario Bros ripoff in 3d. if you haver the patience, by all means give it a try. i'm currently trying to learn python myself, for the blender game engine.
Texturing on this software seems harzardous... Shaders are weak, but of course, to start with, it is more than enough... 3d studio max, has way too many things that takes years to learn, and some you will never use.
