  • I love coming back and watching this video. Thank you for keeping it online. I was surprised to see a proceed with caution warning by YouTube. I don't remember seeing that warning before.

  • Good point John...and thanks for the words and support. Also thank you (and to those out in YouTube and ViralLand who don't know) for your wonderful work in getting glbtq voices and music out on the airwaves from the Gold Coast to every coast.

  • Considering what else is uncensored on YouTube I'm disappointed that they have responded to God-knows-who by slapping a "proceed with caution" page before we get to watch this affirmatively moral and virtuous video - the page says "The following content has been identified by the YouTube community as being potentially offensive or inappropriate. Viewer discretion is advised." Jon has done a great job with this video - and with the updated song (updatable now re DADT repeal etc). xx John

  • Although off by 15 months in the video (as a then prediction as March 2010), NY State legalizes same-sex marriage. Happy Pride 2011.

  • Happy 42nd Pride folks! I love this video and it still is the best at capturing some of our history.

  • Pride is BEEN AROUND forever so lets STOP the PREJUDICE man

  • Happy Pride To All!!! GLBT Rock on! We have come a long way thanks to all of the people who stood for our rights and to get equality in motion. I love being gay! Its feirce! I Love this song and I can hear it over and over. Its all about P-R-I-D-E!!!!

  • @babyninja09 You said it Babyninja09!! Thanks for the love and pride.

  • Not to say there won't be other songs that represent other LGBT heros

  • Hey Jon, I absolutely love the song! I am a little disappointed though that there was no mention of Alan Turing. He was one of the most important figures of the 20th century and his treatment at the hands of the British government is one of the most well-known and despicable cases of homophobia that I've ever heard.

Anyway, it's a pretty minor detail. This is still one of my favourite songs. Thanks!

  • Thanks Woofsie. True, Alan Turing was a major figure in our history, but sometimes you just can't have it all in a song.

  • Hey! With the coming of the new year this song is still very important. Pride at 40 would be 2010. I think the theme for Pride this year is revolution(?) So why not. This country is long over due for a social revolution.

  • Sounds good to me!

  • Great video! I am gay too! They have approved gay marriage here in Iowa and i am so proud to be living here! Let's hope the other states follow with the understanding that it is unconstitutional to prevent gays from getting married. There is still a chance it could be taken away so activism still counts, i will recommend this video to be shown from youtube at our meetings.

  • @retroiowagirl86 It's a shame we lost Maine though....We're gonna be fighting tooth and nail to take back California!

  • We (the USA) have a long way to go. Portugal just approved same-sex marriage...and Nepal will this coming year.

  • And thanks retroiowagirl86 for the support!!!

  • I love everything about this video. It fills me with pride. Love the lyrics. 5 stars from me!

  • Thank you onemantwodogs! That means a lot!!

  • I remember being chased by gangs in downtown El Paso who would prey on queers. The Lesbians and Drag queens would chase them away. Those bitches had more fuckin balls than the rest of us.

  • and they still do!

  • Wonderful video, thanks!!!

  • Thanks jefgain!

  • I find this music video does a good job marking points in our history. If this doesn't get picked up, I'll make it my mission to pass it around to the community. IDK, change the label, it's still the same content and message.

  • Thanks Jpoid!

  • what a great choose of images .

  • This has nothing to do with Toronto Pride 2009. The video was never approved nor released to media folks (like me) and would never have been carried.

The Official video was shown at the Toronto Pride Gala Awards show at the Carlu, downtown Toronto.

    It's MUCH better....

    Don't fall for the hype...

  • This was amazing!

  • Thanks Aestus!

  • this gives me goosebumps.....its not always easy bein gay even today.......but i think about my older brothers n sisters and how hard it must have been for them.....gives me the strength to fight even harder......salut to U for postin this.....ur bro Pauly.....))

  • Pauly, thanks! That means a lot to hear.

  • I need to get an I pod and blare this in my car while I drive. It is that f-ing awsome.

  • Thanks Jpoid....blare it out for the world!

  • I like seeing all the military stuff in here. I wanna get that pic of the guys putting up the pride flag.

  • This video made me all teary. Will definitely listen to the song again and again.

  • Thanks. I still do too.

  • Yeah, even after all these months I still keep listening to it over and over and over. It's fantastic. Being only eighteen and living in the bastion of liberalness that is New York City, I sometimes feel like life's too easy for me as a queerperson... videos like this remind me WHY life is so good to me--all the people who came and suffered before me would be THRILLED to know that I think life is relatively easy.

  • Just remember, we may live in coast states, a lot of boys and girls in the middle of the country still need help. Good example is Fort Worth, Texas. Police think it's still a pass time to go attack the gay bar.

  • Excellent lyrics! Well done to all who worked on this. It's truly great.

  • Thanks djstonedog! That was me :)

  • Oh! Maybe a remix with Melissa Ethridge singing during the Stonewall part of the song. IDK I thought it might sound cool.

  • Thank you so much for this GREAT video. What a wonderful tribute to all the people who fought and survived to see history being made. Lets never forget!

  • Thanks so much Richie! Happy Pride.

  • Little troubling to hear that. Knowing our history is very important. I'm gonna smack the next twink teen that doesn't know what Stonewall is.

  • ...and give him another smack for me too

  • This video is so incredibly amazing and it pains me to think that LOGO did not accept this. Sorry LOGO...this DOES speak to me.

  • thanks Stashbib! I think so too.

  • ...in fact, LOGO also said they'd at least post it on their website for Pride. Of course, typical b.s. LOGO, they didn't. I never thought of them as a good and professional network anyway, but when they were the only trick in town...and a lot of their videos they air ad nauseum are very amateurish and horrible, I figured they'd at least be somewhat community minded...at least for one month.

  • Actually, this is all healthy dialogue in our community. Not to be a sore badmouth, LOGO TV (US) said this video didn't speak to its viewers, and they would actually find it too boring as a music video. LOGO also said people aren't interested in footage and history like that.

So to some "GLBT" companies and services, the gay community only cares about club music, bikini underwear, RuPaul and lesbian nighttime dramas. Too bad since much of the adverts are straight oriented (male enhancement!).

  • WTF? A video like this doesn't speak to the GAY community? Really? Do they realize what they are saying? Are they even gay? LOL

This is a work of paramount significance for gays and straights alike and should get a lot of airplay on LOGO and other venues.

Thanks for making this important media presentation. It's inspiring and fills me with Pride!

  • interesting

  • Hi MSMillerNYC my comment was a reply to Esterandcdlm whosays he/she kissed 3 people on the video. By being in tune I meant in tune with our history. Jglsongs has elaborated on that in his/her reply to you. Of course you are entatle to your opinion!Friends?

  • his...(as in Jon)...thanks!

  • I come from the old guard respecting others rights to their opinions freedom of speech beliefs. Doing so may bond and empower us bringing all to a better understanding and acceptance of others. While we may not always agree with each other we should agree that it's OK to disagree. Two Nazis holding hands eroticizing fascism? It was SS propaganda. Done to determine who was gay in the ranks. See the film THE DAMNED. Some leathermen still do Nazi drag. Insensitive and offensive.

  • Great song, but you forgot LaReina DelBarrio!

  • Maybe...but I did mention another "Reina," ... Silvia Rivera!

  • OK but consider me for next year. I do this 24 hours a day and am ignored by ggay mainstream for being a drag queen who actually writes, edits, and produces television. Perhaps it screws with the LGBTQ status quo. I hope we add another ten letters to that...

  • Absolutely fantastic!Thank you for giving me back my pride!I know you are on our side and any negative comments about who you have included on the video, are not in tune...And if they are not gay, what are they doing watching It!!!!

  • Thank you soleemare1!!

  • I'm as gay as anyone on this page. And I've been gay longer than most of you. Does that mean that I can't make "any negative comments about" the contents of this video? What does "not in tune" mean? Does it mean less gay? Or less proud? What kind of ideological fascism is that?

  • Gays have always been fascistic when it comes to beauty. Interesting that Log Cabiners won't include drag queens. ALL LGBTQICDO - lesbian gay bi trans queer intersexed crossdressers dragqueen older and how many more letters?

EQUALITY FOR ALL LAVENDER PEOPLE, NOT JUST WASP LOG CABINERS.

  • Thank you.

  • and thank you too

  • and thank you too!

  • I'm not sure what Leopold and Loeb have to do with the history of gay and lesbian civil rights. They kidnapped and murdered a 14 year old child. Why not include a clip of Jeffrey Dahmer while your at it? And a propaganda poster of two Nazis holding hands? Your emphasis in that period of history should be on the thousands of gay and lesbian lives lost in concentration camps, not on eroticizing fascism. This is an "official" pride video? Who's side are you all on?

  • I'm on the good side...there is a reference to Hitler and the Nazis. Leopold and Loeb were despicable but their crime did reflect on gay history and the way it was looked at by society at the time. The video is a history lesson...there's (hopefully mostly) good but there is also bad (Roy Cohn, Ahmadinejad, Anita Bryant, Reagan...) If we only talk about the good, we'll never learn from the bad and evil.

  • Very well said! Thank you!

  • Edison's lab assistants dancing together in the first movie! Priceless!

  • Thanks Artwit69...I've always loved that myself.

  • OMG, I kissed two of the people shown in this video. Does that mean I am Gay too? NOOOOOOO.....tee hee, twiddle dee dee.

  • :) you never know

  • What a wonderful, wonderful video. The historical footage is simply heart warming!

  • Thank you!!

  • Prop 8 supporters said "a storm is coming"...They failed to mention there's a rainbow after the storm clears.

  • And I can't wait for that rainbow...it'll be the most beautiful and brightest rainbow we'll ever see.

  • THANK YOU This is really a great video and I am including it into my blogs to spread OUR PRIDE......

  • Thank you too Pawzbears!!

  • Breath-takingly beautiful and so professionally put together.

    An honour to be gay!

    Happy Pride.

    Jonathan.

  • Thank you Jonathan! All the best, Jon (technically Jonathan).

  • Just wanted to make clear that not everyone or everything in our history is something to be proud of - but it's still part of it. Hitler, Leopold&Loeb, Roy Cohn, Anita Bryant, Ahmadinejad...not proud of them but they did effect GLBTQ history

  • Brilliant. What a great job with both the song and the video. Very inspiring.

  • Thank you cjarvis! Sending lots of pride to Central CA! Go Fresno!!

  • I want to know where to buy the cd or download the song..... any help??

  • Basically from 4:30 on is win.

  • Thanks mattz1010!

  • True...and thanks edmacdaddy

  • This hate all boils down to religion. great video btw.

  • Wonderful video.

  • Thanks devedsmith!

  • Okay, I gotta ask, what was the still about Superman about? I miss something? He looked half-naked.

  • There was this whole thing a couple of years ago (also made a cover of Newsweek or Time?) about Superheroes being gay...either about hints in the recent comic books or people theorizing. In any case, Superman and Catwoman were two characters thought to be gay - guess it made it easier for Dumbeldore to come out. :)

  • Ah! okay, thanks for the answer.

  • Excellent video. I only have one complaint. Why did we get to see a still from The L Word at 3:51 but only heard Queer as Folk mentioned @3:41 without any image? Im sure between Millennium March and the Time magazine cover (re Dr. Laura's evil ways), you could slip in a still from QAF for just a second or 0.5 sec, considering QAF had more cultural impact and was a better show than The L Word.

  • Thanks spspww! True, QAF broke new ground way bfore the L Word, but it joined a group of a lot of images that were hard to fit in.

  • Today, I have decided to retire from gay activism and I pass on the torch to those hands that seem to be very capable of carrying forth from my generation. I'll always be proud of our people.

  • Thank you GingaSoulja!

  • I love my gay brothers and sisters, we are the magic within humanity, we bring true meaning to the words come celebrate life!!! Bravo and hats off to all those who have worked on this project. thank you. :)

  • Thank you aefranch! Thank you stogieman2! RaymondHng...good eyes :) Hope these headlines come true. The NY state marriage will probably take a little longer...now that our Governor has started the process, it'll probably happen more like 2012 or 2013.

  • wonderful....thanks so very much for this!

  • what an awesome beautiful video...very well done and great song....you will BE writing the 50 Anniversary song as well....LOL

  • Interesting headlines: 5:06 "Sweden legalizes gay marriage" 05/01/09 5:08 "Prop 8 overturned" 11/01/09 5:10 "NY court rules in gay marriage" 03/08/10 5:12 "Gay marriage legal in Belgium" 07/08/14 5:14 "AIDS vaccine approved" 10/22/15 5:15 "Lesbian elected mayor of NYC" 11/11/2015 5:18 "50th anniversary Stonewall" 07/01/19 5:19 "Federal same-sex marriage" 04/03/20 5:21 "Gay gene alterations illegal" 03/14/22 5:23 "Vatican apologizes to homosexuals" 07/25/22

  • thanks jesus666r! That means a lot.

  • amazing can even make a cynic like me choke up a bit.

  • Thank you justbtube!! Thank you sfpecs!!

  • made me proud!

  • 5 stars, Amazing.

  • Thanks RogerioLauper and Desisto2007! You're both right...Cyndi Lauper is amazing and a major friend to the community!

  • Beautiful video, beautiful music. Only missed the presence of Cyndi Lauper who is more than a great singer. It is a fighter for equal rights and an example of human being.

  • I just loved...i think is very reasonable remember of so many heroes, such as Boy George, one of the most important and brilliant poets of our times, but i think is missing one very important name, I'm talking about Cyndi Lauper, this great Diva is a fighter and is always there for the community...I think that a dance-remix would be very welcome and this time the name of our Diva must be there!!!

  • Same premise VeggieChick...but the music is different and the history is way different!

  • This sounds A LOT like We Didn't Start The Fire.

  • Good eyes Raymond! That was one of my predictions...that Gavin Newsom would someday be President, and help legalize the federal gay marriage act.

  • Thanks Maggy! I like being optimistic, but you might have a point about the Vatican! Still, it's better to send out the good energy and let the universe spread it around.

  • Great!! Loved the ending with the newspaper articles. But I'm afraid you are too optimistic: AIDS vaccine in 2015 - maybe, but Vatican Apologizes to Homosexuals?? Never! ... Unfortunately

  • thanks itsdman77

  • Look closely at the newspaper article dated 2029 at 5:30. The text mentions "Former president Newsom".

  • beautiful. thanks.

  • I'm so proud to know you Jon!! GREAT VIDEO!!! We played it at the new NY BEAR DEN today and it was a hit!!

  • I'm really glad it was a hit!! You're the best!!!

  • Wow! Great John! And I just noticed Freddy had a hand in this too! This is GREAT! _ Brian

  • Thanks Brian!!

  • I agree Gerry. The early years' vintage photos and film are pretty white...it's hard to find diversity - even up through the 70's. Thanks too dfwruffplay.

  • Still a GREAT piece. Kudos. I do feel like the audio of the final version lacks much of the haunting quality of some of the earlier versions that are still floating around out there. For some.. that may be a good thing.. for me.. not so much.

  • It's difficult but sometimes we must take the time to make sure there is representation. iHow about if we see a picture of James Baldwin instead of a still from the play. True, many african american's were fighting in the civil rights movement but many were part of the gay rights movement as well. Since the video is spanning our history and not just about 1959, it would be nice to see more faces of colour in the later years.

  • This is nice but....... as the lyrics say "it's time to celebrate ALL the colours of the rainbow", so where are they? I only see a few faces at the end of the video.

Where are the non-white faces of our history?- Audre Lorde, James Baldwin, Langston Hughes, and what about our trans sisters and brothers?? The movement is about much more that our white brothers contributions to the struggle, as much as those contributions are important and need to be celebrated.

  • It's difficult to get every one in a 5 minute song, but James Baldwin is in there ("..Giovanni's Room") as is the reference "..Harlem nights" (Gladys Bentley) and John Amaechi. Audre Lord is missing from the song, but not from our history...Gertrude Stein is missing too (not of color, but importance). The other issue is that African-Americans had to deal with the struggle of racism, which made it even more difficult to fight anything else. 2009 is a lot different than 1959...wait until 2029.

  • LOVE IT!!

  • Thanks Dabudsta, funguy and dannazion! Yes, it's like BJ's song...when you rattle off history in a song, it's all going to sound like "We Didn't Start the Fire." :)

  • wonderful

  • Kind of amusing when i was in school i had to do a report on "we didnt start the fire"-Billy Joel this is obviously taken from his song i like the way they tied it together tho

  • Bravo!

  • thanks myp410up and tvsbbs!

  • Awesome and yes pride instilling!

  • ROCKIN'!

  • Thanks Mike!

  • It's great revisiting the struggle in this video. The lyrics are also moving.

    Mike Andrews

    Sex

    I T U N E S

  • Thank you Sue!!

  • Fabulous. I watch it over and over and still see something new.

  • Thanks to my friend Shahar, there is now closed caption on the video with the lyrics.

  • does anybody have a fuul text of this song? It's sometimes difficult to understand for foreigners ;)

  • The lyrics appear when you click the CC (closed caption) button.

  • Thanks ElmwoodChi!

  • Fantastic!

  • Thank you everyone!

  • well done! informative, inspiring, and moving.

  • Wow. Lots of great gay history you riffed in those verses! I like the extended chorus too-- catchy! Thanks for asking to incorporate my Rainbow Flag Above Me photo near the end. I'm blogging this.

  • Thanks UWSDaddy!

  • This is great!

  • We love Harry Hay!

  • HARRY HAY!!! YAY!!

  • I am a radical faery, and I used to live at the Wolf Creek Sanctuary. Harry Hay and John Burnside would hold their sex magic seminars there. Even in his advanced age, he was still beyond most people. He is a gay icon, but more than that, he was a gay thinker. The stuff he would come up with, was just mind blowing and mesmerizing...lol I miss him.

  • The final and official release of the video...and song "Pride 2009." Hope it creates a lot of good and (more importantly) change.
