I think these are pretty good visual representations of defeats. The villain is at some height or level of strength and power and must be brought down or debased. Thus, you get a lot of falling, changing levels, and shrinking. When they don't die they are in some way humiliated and thus metaphorically "lowered". There are, of course, a few exceptions.

That's from Fantasia 2000, Stravinsky's Firebird Suite specifically. And it's kind of out of place here as the spirit of the forest/spirit of Spring or whatever, is not a villain, nor is it defeated. If anything, the firebird/volcano is the villain (which, why is it a villain in the first place?) and IT is defeated sort of, once we get back from the sudden black-screen to find that the firebird has retreated.
