@nomejodas101 .. Its called "Repeated Pattern" a globally accepted orchestral term/application, that is used as an undermining concept in "modern" music
@mjazzguitar ISN"T IT AMAZING that Hendrix had them open for him, about 20 yrs ahead of their time?? I saw Hendrix at 2nd Atlanta Pop on July 4th 1970, a couple of months before he died, awesome concert, and NOT available on dvd - what a crime.. Soft Machine will likely always sound fresh and innovative! true jazz
@WmJoseSinclair I believe it was the other way around--that they opened for Jimi when the 2 bands toured, tho I could be wrong. It's also possible they alternated headlining. Either way, it's actually somewhat less surpirising they toured together, as they were all under the the management of Mike Jeffries (who is said to have later absconded with the company funds and high-tailed it to the Carribbean). Anyway--along with the John Coltrane Quartet--these are my favorite bands--ever!
I did it again, I did it again, I did it again, I did it again, I did it again, I did it again, I did it again, I did it again, I did it again, I did it again, I did it again, I did it again, I did it again, I did it again, I did it again, I did it again, I did it again, I did it again, I did it again
if there had been techno music in the 60s, "We did it again" would have been the No. 1 on the list. the main difference is that this is high quality music from a super talented band, but todays techno or other bands are just crap, they have nothing to do to music.

It's amazing that they recorded the base tracks for this album live in the studio during their US tour. You can really feel a good vibe goin' on. The producer was, on the other hand, constantly on the phone talking to his girlfriends during the recording of the album. Ah well. Perhaps it was for the best? I read somewhere that "We did it Again" only worked for the band in a live setting in Southern France. The rest of Europe just didn't get it, haha. Their loss. :P I love the Softs. <3
A good one off volume one. I would also suggest putting up "So boot it all" or "Why are we sleeping?". Those are some other awesome tracks off the first album.
More cerebral in some respects, but it stays doggedly on the I-chord for almost all of its duration! Harmonically, it represents a great simplification (except for the chordal pyramid Mike Ratledge erects over the repeated riff).
This kind of I-bVII riff goes back at least to the late 50s, and "Sunshine Of Your Love" is another example.
too bad there's no recording of the 45 minute live version, I would love to hear that ;)

Cool tune. Who cares if they repeat the same thing over and over when the music rocks?

This is like a more cerebral, conceptual version of "You Really Got Me" by the Kinkies.
