I think they're fairly good at organizing already written compositions, but neither of the two guitarists have any actual skill. They play with very little passion, and often settle for a sloppy tone and performance.
But that's not to say they aren't good. I think they're great at adding structure to the songs, I just think that their execution could be a lot better.
The Black Mages emulate video game music. As does Powerglove and many other successful bands. Just because you're covering video game compositions, doesn't mean you should sacrifice the effort you put into your tone and performance. That's what ultimately defines you as a musician.
im pretty sure that Nobuo Uematsu is in the Black Mages, and if i'm not mistaken, emulating would mean he covering the compositions, so Black Mages aren't really emulating video game music considering Nobuo Uematsu is a very talented composer and arranger, give the guy a lot more credit close to twenty years of composing piece after piece merits more than emulation.
No, The Black Mages compositions are not ENTIRELY the same as the original works... NONE of them are. Nobuo plays the Organ, and works with the rest of the band when arranging the songs, thus they are DIFFERENT RENDITIONS.

I've said it before, I think they're great at ARRANGING compositions. But they are SERIOUSLY playing at grade-school level. They need to practice, period.
And I've noticed that you have vertexguy as one of your favorites. See, HE'S talented. He has a the perfect combination of video-game songs AND emotion. The Minibosses are very mechanical in their playing, and never make an attempt at building up ferocity in their pieces, making them weak, and not as engaging as most bands.
