Actually, SLANGIER is not a made-up word. It's in the Official Scrabble Players' Dictionary (which is based on Websters). So I would protest that. Don't know what dictionary they're using but it's a good word.
I think Tom was going for "slangier," as in an adjective form of slang. It's in the online dictionary at least so there's a chance it should have been accepted.
But I love the look Tom gives to the judges for his, "Van Dyke" clue thinking he got that in before the time buzzer.
