Actually the school was made for indigent Hawaiian kids excluding specifically excluding Catholics and Anglican and was supposed to be a trade school. Kamehameha Schools does not teach its true history like how the school admin forced all of its students to take the Oath to the Republic of Hawai`i in order to enroll, how Bishop created the school as a tax break, or how even Queen Lili`uokalani disliked how Kamehameha Schools was set up and called it "scarcely a national benefit" in her book.

I personally am against the Akaka Bill but I agree with you. Alot of people are making it out as if making Hawaiians into a tribe is a novelty under American law. As far back as 1775, there were offices that dealt with Indian tribes and there's 562 recognized Indian tribes. Indian tribes do not get subsidies from their State governments and their education, etc comes out of the tribal and Federal budgets. If the whites never came to Hawaii this place would have thrived reguardless. The Hawaiian nation was fine before anyone came here. The native Hawaiians (according to archeologists) had the least negative impact on the land, then any other native peoples..EVER. Their system was top notch. They knew what they were doing.

Wrong. There was no Hawaiian nation before 1810 - nothing but warring tribes, human sacrifice, slavery of the kauwa, and a radical religious tradition that was both mysogynistic and feudalistic. The native Hawaiians killed hundreds of species before 1778, and the only reason why they didn't have "rubbish" is because they were a stone age society with nothing that wasn't biodegradable.

You seem to forget that John Young was not like the missionaries and others who came later. Young did not impose his religion, his language, and his way of life. He adopted the Hawaiian culture and even participated at heiau services. That was one of the reasons why Young etc were trusted--they Hawaiianized themselves even sporting tattoos.

And no, Young was not the one that "armed" Kamehameha. It was Kana'ina who was the main arms broker. Young was a political and technical advisor. Kamehameha unified the islands because he treated the newcomers as fellow humans, rather than exhibiting the xenophobic tendencies common in other pacific islands. His embrace of the "technical advisor" into both his government as well as his family was an example to follow, and celebrate.
To pretend that the contributions of people post-1778 should be minimized simply because of their race is wrong.

The Convention Army and the Colonial Militias defeated the British not the French. The French only backed the Americans after the Battle of Saratoga--a year after the Declaration of Independence. Furthermore, Kamehameha I won the unification wars because he had superior military tactics. all of the ali`i had guns and canons and you can't deny that before Capt. Cook, 3/4 of Hawai`i was already united under the family of Kahekili--and without foreign advisors. But since you bring up Young, etc it should be noted they ALL adopted the Hawaiian language and culture. They did not impose their own culture on even their own children. They integrated themselves into Hawai`i.

Henry Oobookiah begged the Connecticut missionaries to come to Hawaii, they lived there for a year under probation, then Queen Kaahumanu converted and made Christianity the official religion of Hawaii. Nobody came with swords and guns blazing to force anything on Hawaii except for King Kamehameha in his war of conquest and unification.

Besides you're making Young, etc into heroes. They did not "serve Hawai`i" because of the love of Hawai`i. They saw an opportunity and they seized it. They came from England at a time when slavery was still legal, debtors were jailed, had no voting rights, and these men (who were all low class men impressed into naval service) said "hey I can live in Hawai`i, marry a lot of women or go back to England where I could die of poverty". It was an easy choice for Young and the others.

Actually the school was made for indigent Hawaiian kids excluding specifically excluding Catholics and Anglican and was supposed to be a trade school. Kamehameha Schools does not teach its true history like how the school admin forced all of its students to take the Oath to the Republic of Hawai`i in order to enroll, how Bishop created the school as a tax break, or how even Queen Lili`uokalani disliked how Kamehameha Schools was set up and called it "scarcely a national benefit" in her book.

I personally am against the Akaka Bill but I agree with you. Alot of people are making it out as if making Hawaiians into a tribe is a novelty under American law. As far back as 1775, there were offices that dealt with Indian tribes and there's 562 recognized Indian tribes. Indian tribes do not get subsidies from their State governments and their education, etc comes out of the tribal and Federal budgets. So kauinoapono etc arguments are moot that this would be a burden to state taxpayers.

It would be a novelty, since the Hawaiian Kingdom was not a race-based nation -> anyone, of any race, could be a citizen, and people of all races helped unify the Hawaiian islands under Kingdom rule. The 1840 Constitution of the Hawaiian Kingdom declared that all people were "of one blood". Kau inoa disrespects our kupuna and the ideals of equality.

There were two Home Rule parties. Home Rule Republicans and Home Rule Independents.
Wilcox and Kuhio advocated Statehood because they wanted to have the governors to be elected--which they were not. The governors and the entire judiciary were appointed by the US president and mostly drawn from US military and former Republic of Hawai`i officials. Look what happened later with the Massie Case. Also, Wilcox also brought up Statehood as a way to question to legality of annexation.
