This song, along with Jar Of Flies in general, holds dear to me such sentimental value...beyond what words could express. Just beautiful and awe-inspiring.
"ROTTEN APPLE" IS SYMBOLIC FOR AMERICAN SOCIETY/AMERICAN PEOPLE, THE FUCKED-UP ONES THAT ARE EVIL, THE FUCKED-UP ONES THAT ARE GOOD, IT'S ABOUT EVERYTHING & EVERYONE.
KEEP IN MIND THAT LIFE IS SUFFERING, AND WITHOUT SUFFERING, THERE WOULD NO COMPASSION.
@Supaduck0: There's still tons of good music out now. It's just not hugely in the mainstream (unless you talk about Adele, then yes). I was born in October of 93, during the Grunge era, and while I love 90's music, I also love 2000's and 2010's music, the good kind. Just search a little deeper for that treasure.
I was a teeenager when this shit came out and I was on rock and crank and we all loved Layne for telling these punks how it really was...our generation was hardcore compared to these cats! We were kids when we did this shit. Can u imagine kids in a garage slammin dope(14 & 15 )listening to this band? Well it happened. We did it every day...AIC is too hardcore!
@RHCPwoot o yeah your an expert, sorry. figure of speech dumbfuck! hardcore,bad,cool,tight,etc...i meant they were too cool. Good enough for you fuckface?
Used to always listen to this one, Room a Thousand Years Wide/Mailman (Soundgarden) and Rearviewmirror to pull me out of a funk. This was my most-played song.
I was born in their prime, but I wish I was born before their prime to experience the music as they released it. But still, fucking Alice in Chains, man!
I heard this song when I was 13 and it still gives me the same feeling listening to it. layne staley was a brilliant mind who's delve into the darkness ended his life way to short love ya brother
@ghostwhiskey I was30, when I first saw a "Dirt" poster in a neighbor kid's window, I was 40 when I first heard them....and still listen to them at least weekly.
This new lead singer gives Alice In Chains back it's sound..... this song is epic, this song is beautiful, this song is heart and soul, this song is Alice In Chains.
Grunge is just a blanket term for early 90s Seattle music, used by people who don't understand music and can't classify this properly. I believe the word they are looking for is "art", but what would they know about that?
@MisterSkillet100 well said. i always refer to this genre as the seattle 90's shit, ya know, real music hehe =) i hate all these names for shit like "grunge" or "goth". it just gives ppl who would otherwise agree that the music is awesome something to argue about lol.
as an ex-dug addict for years myself trying to kill my demons, heroin, crack, cocaine, meth, xtasy, mushrooms, weed, and pain killers up the ass,,im surprised im not partying with layne in heaven right now
This album is such a masterpiece. If you listen to it from start to finish, it is an emotional journey like no other. A different emotion for every track. Truly genius and guess what? It was written in about a week. One of the best bands ever ladies and gentlemen.
I remember catching flies in a jar, when I was a child in the Bronx, many years ago. Listening to this song, and looking at this album art, makes me think sometimes children grow up so fast...eat of the apple so young.
kids these days are into dubstep and lil wayne. they have no clue what it takes to make actual music like this. its pathetic and im ashmed. im 21 and my generation might be the only hope to save rock n roll, or music period
i don't care about subgenre's (my opinion), and i was merely bringing up a question as to why you we're expressing your opinion by saying that you care about subgenre's and that AIS isn't the "best band" (in your opinion), when you ultimately stated that wouldn't preach such things. Regardless of the FACT that opinions are subjective, why do we still express our opinions (like you and I are currently doing)?
This song is so dark and mysterious, a complete work of art. I know it's inspired by drugs (like a lot of Layne's stuff), but it's almost like a drug in itself, such is its magnetism.
Alice In Chains and Nirvana I think while completely different, were the best of the 4, I personally prefer Pearl Jam over Soundgarden, but I dont think eithet have the same impact on me as Nirvana and Alice In Chains.
Whats the fucking point of this whole "THIS IS BETTER THAN THAT!" Rave that's going on? I love Nirvana way more but I never come to an Alice in Chains video just to say that. I'm all for voicing opinions but it really is just a tirade of choking other people with your own opinion. Just take it down a notch. We can all be friends can't we?
my favorite songs by Alice in Chains that I can play over and over; down in a hole, rooster, heroin, bleed the freak, sea of sorrow, nutshell, love hate love, and many more... but over the past few years this song has really stuck on me and I play it the most when I have to do homework for college or take a long drive somewhere. such a great song.
I was listening to other kinds of music (you know for the sake of knowing and not being ignorant) and amidst a sea of artist and styles, non will have near the impact on my heart and soul. This bands soul will transcend time and have brought me into a higher strata of life, a pinnacle where chaos and order thrive. For some this might be music, but for me...this feels like home.
sometimes i listen to nirvana...then i listen to soundgarden and realise how stupid i was..after that i listen pearl jam and i can't belive what is happening to me....after that i listen ALICE IN CHAINS and i come back to earth and i'm fuckin' glad that happened
(P.S. i'm sry if i spelled something wrong...english is not my mother language)
Man, that opening bass line just fucking cuts into you, and the rest of the song is just amazing. In fact this whole EP inspired me to pick up the bass. Thank you Jerry, Mike, Sean and Layne. For everything.
I don't see why it matters which Grunge band is "better", they all liked each other, they were all friends, they all got along, plus they shared one of the best genres in rock history, you can like whoever you want, and I'll do the same, but there is no sense in arguing who is "better" than who or who is "real grunge." Just stop arguing and listen to this amazing song by this amazing band.
@GreenGhost81 First off, grunge is just a label of the time period..it's not a actual musical genre. Secondly, who gives a fuck if they were all friends..some bands are better than others. AIC is the best and people need to acknowledge that.
@MrTufflong Ahem, First off, Grunge is a sub-genre of Alternative Rock Music, you don't believe me, look it up. Second, I'm pretty sure I give a fuck, because the point is that they were all friends and respected each other. No band is better than another, musical appreciation is completely subjective. AIC is the best band from your perspective, while I really like them, I don't believe there is a "best band" and I wouldn't preach that concept either because they are just my opinions.
@efooty09 I don't know which part you were referring to. Grunge is a sub-genre of music, that is a fact and the last person to reply to my comment was too ignorant to know that. All I am saying is I don't get why everyone has to argue over petty bullshit such as "who's better" when it's all opinionated and subjective. We all have one thing in common, we all like AIC, so talk about AIC instead of arguing, there's no reason for it.
@GreenGhost81 People have that "my dick is bigger than your dick" state of mind so when they say they listen to __ band they hope their friends, or lack thereof, cheer them on to make them feel validated rather than be part of the masses that enjoy all kinds of music and fade into obscurity. I fucking love Soundgarden and their former Temple of the Dog self among so many other bands, they can't accept the fact we love all kinds of music :D
@TheMarthamarble wrong, u mean fuck pearl jam is awesome and aic too................who is nirvana? exactly, an extinct band that never did anything great and never would.....
I bought this CD when it came out and listened to it for about two weeks straight starting the day I buried one of my best friend's. Today is the anniversary of his death. I'm listening to it again, because I'm burying another close friend this week. This album means so much to me.
@gamegurl67 Yeah, Mike Inez is still alive... Mike Inez has been AIC's bassist since 93'. Starr left after Facelift, Sap, And Dirt. Inez played bass for Jar Of Flies, Tri-Pod, and BGWTB. He is alive and well right this second.

Just stop arguing and listen to this amazing song by this amazing band.

@GreenGhost81 First off, grunge is just a label of the time period..it's not a actual musical genre. Secondly, who gives a fuck if they were all friends..some bands are better than others. AIC is the best and people need to acknowledge that.
MrTufflong 2 months ago
@MrTufflong Ahem, First off, Grunge is a sub-genre of Alternative Rock Music, you don't believe me, look it up. Second, I'm pretty sure I give a fuck, because the point is that they were all friends and respected each other. No band is better than another, musical appreciation is completely subjective. AIC is the best band from your perspective, while I really like them, I don't believe there is a "best band" and I wouldn't preach that concept either because they are just my opinions.

@GreenGhost81 Then if that rant was just your opinion too, why did you preach it?
