The depiction of science as a mechanism of power, control, oppression and destruction is an all too familiar one in popular movies. Any new tech. discovered inevitably becomes the desire of some psychopath who wishes to use it for ultimately evil ends - although the tech is essentially benign or helpful if used in other ways. Scientific discovery and research is often depicted in this way. Mayhaps it is time for a movie that shows scientists trying to help - which reflects reality.

That 'equal opportunity' answer Tyson gave was unsatisfactory to me. In my country there certainly is equal opportunity for women to get a high quality science education - in fact, most university students are already women. Nevertheless, most scientists (and I mean hard, traditional science, not social science) are still men.
Listening up to 12:43 I think any scientist--be it a philosophical naturalist or one who believes in the divine Designer--would agree with that which has been said. Dr. Dawkins' statement about the safeguards built into science of requiring repeatable results tells me he is talking about observable science and not that which, by necessity, requires much more inference than observation, i.e. origins.
I think it may also prove helpful to some of the viewers here to try to evaluate many of the more strident claims of the anti-theist critique ("brights") from a ideological/ metaphysics perspective. Check out the recent article by Jackson Lears in the May 16, 2011 issue of the The Nation entitled "Same Old New Atheism" .The article offers a compelling analysis of Sam Harris' works. @TomVodkaCollins Agreed - there are movies that depict scientific knowledge and the power it can bring in a more positive light - but, unfortunately - with the proclivity for focusing on the negative that we humans possess - the general vibe is one leaning towards the negative. I only say this as a former theist who witnessed many a conversation revolving around the evils of science that would arise amongst fellow theists. Science=no soul no god therefore science=satan and evil.

We understand the goodie-goodies of the world, so it's the motivations of the doer of evil we find intriguing. Is there a more compelling figure in literature than Satan, for instance? How common is it for the villain in a story to have his birth in perceived betrayal by the hero of the tale? Lucifer might be the first instance of this paradigm in recorded history. I should look into that.

In my country there certainly is equal opportunity for women to get a high quality science education - in fact, most university students are already women. Nevertheless, most scientists (and I mean hard, traditional science, not social science) are still men.

Listening up to 12:43 I think any scientist--be it a philosophical naturalist or one who believes in the divine Designer--would agree with that which has been said. Dr. Dawkins' statement about the safeguards built into science of requiring repeatable results tells me he is talking about observable science and not that which, by necessity, requires much more inference than observation, i.e. origins.

Plus he's probably the most spot-on in his strategy. It's probably the most smart thing as a strategy for science to say that science is not out to replace religion--- if people need religion, find meaning in it, spirituality, or whatever, okay--- but the minute religion begins to posit "facts" about matters of a purely scientific nature--- e.g., the origin of the universe, the origin of species, etc.--- it needs to butt the hell out and let science do its thing.

I like science, because it does not prove or disprove God, people think this is the discussion but it's got nothing to do with it. When I look at the physics we discovered recently and look at scripture I think it leads to God, but what do I define as God, or is God ineffable? I know science is true, iI like darwin, evolution, I dont disagree with them at all, but I still see God as the scientist who molded the universe. You can't "prove" God , you can't disprove God either.

Can you reproduce the results of your experiment? Can you explain in great detail, everything you did to find this out, that doesn't involve text from primitive men?
All scripture are similar because they all come from the same species.

what if someone showed you that scripture says God prepared this for use over 6 periods of time, or 600,000,000 years? evolution is true, and so is the science of the scripture. Vedic scripture has been proved over and over with modern discoveries, the bible, the koran, all proven with science and discoveries of the 20th century.

Flat out blatant lies my friend. Scripture isn't Science. The entirety of your post can be easily fabricated by anyone with a high school to college level vocabulary. Darwin never made any statements with him supporting ID and rejecting his theory, in fact even if he did, words don't change reality. The evidence from Paleantology, Anthropology, Molecular Biology and Genetics prove Darwin's theory. The entirety of the Scientific Community (which includes the NAS) accept it.

@DanieltheSkeptic it is fully expected that you hate, call names, and insult my level of intelligence as someone who does not believe in God, but I agree with DArwin's theory, I agree with evolution, I agree with science, and I don't know what gave you the idea otherwise but yeah, we're on the same page on science, just not what that science leads us to believe. I don't recall saying you, specifically have poor vocabulary, other than that your arguments can be easily restated by people with the vocabulary at a high school level, meaning your argument is weak and weightless. Science doesn't lead us to believe anything. There is no such thing as a God, that has creator status anyway. A creator deity is a logically impossible idea that has no chance of existing, the idea is purely man made.

I decided to give everyone a chance and study all KNOWLEDGE which is the seperator of religion, religion is Submitting to God, religion is mans lies and traditions, and yet the word religion is ineffable. I have no religion in the terms that you know, but I have true religion in the terms of the religious, ONE LOVE

Calling me willfully ignorant only proves my point. It is a fact that Science doesn't come from Scripture. Which Scripture? Religion preceeds Science in trying to explain our world, but religion makes up answers and claims a form of knowledge that doesn't exist (revelation). There is no God, God is a self defeating, self refutting silly, absurd idea. When someone says that Science has found God, or that God exists, then they lose all credibility and reason.

I feel the heartbreak of the man that teaches physics, I am in school to become a teacher and people, My wife included, just don;t care to know, or learn, they only care if they pass or get a grade, is it on the test? and not actually knowing. there is sometimes 3 or 4 people who strive for knowledge in one class of 55 and it get's fun, wild debate's. I love it!

The women here just comes out and talk here bullshit, God prepared this for us in 6 periods of time, if that means God took 600,000,000 years to prepare earth for man, then that's what God did. I love the revelation of science, the proving that mans religions have lied and perverted some people's teachings, say Jesus maybe?, or when they disproved acupucture or "laying hands" scams from tv prechers, thats great, I just see everything I study as leading to God, and it baffels me to think people see the same thing I do as proof of not God.
