I thought that was considered cruel and unusual punishment and horrible that her parents lost a fight to keep their daughter alive. Terri and her parents were personal friends of a relative of mine that lives in Pinellas county. She showed me what was going on. She stated she knew her creepy husband and Yes!! he got paid!!! He is the devil incarnate.The Schaivo's were very decent, nice, religious people. For God's sake, can't any of you see what it must have been like living through this? It was a horrible nightmare. They attended my mothers funeral 1 year before Terri passed away in the most horrific way there was...

I just really hope everyone realizes that when her autopsy was done, Schiavo's brained weighed half that of a normal woman her height/weight/age. She had sustained massive brain damage and lost neurons in the cerebral cortex, the thalami, the basal ganglia, the hippocampus, the cerebellum, and the midbrain. She was in a Persistent Vegetative State. The autopsy found the damage was "irreversible, and no amount of therapy or treatment would have regenerated the massive loss of neurons."
I will never foreget this case. The husband was a bad men and I think that she should have been returned to her loving parents. I'm happy the government got involved. It was all very sad regardless of what you think. Her story was AMAZING!
I am one and I would NEVER let something this awful happen to anyone. This was up to her parents and siblings, not her ex husband who moved on with his life with another woman years earlier. Where does he get off making the decision to do this to her? This was not his place to do EVER!
This woman was in this condition because her brain didn't recieve enough oxygen for a brief amount of time. There have been no cases of a patient with an anoxic brain injury recovering after three years. The last 12 years of this woman's life were a wasted attempt trying to bring her back to normal functioning.
i feel i generally wouldn't want to be kept that way, and this should be more of an investigation to see how this happened to her. their are also many different opinions on her mental state, from various doctors. Agreed. Even though I agree there was no hope for Terri's recovery, her husband planned it out perfectly. Once he one the $1million settlement against the doctor the only way he could keep that money is if he was T's legal guardian & nurse. He never divorced her even after fathering a child w/ someone else, became a nurse & a couple of months after getting his certificate he ordered a do not ressusitate for her & stuck her in a hospice. Jerk played the system well.
The settlement of which most of it he couldn't even touch. He had a right to the loss of consortium the rest went to Terri's care which dried up over a 15 year period to the point that she was on medicaid the last years of her life. Schiavo could have walked away anytime he wanted. In fact he could have pulled the plug years ago but instead decided to have a court decide what to do.
@lauraleesmithagain sorry, but you're wrong. He was awarded for LOSS OF CONSORTIUM, which means the phusical loss of his WIFE; he did not have to remain her guardian in order to keep the money. The vast majority of the settlement went to pay for her medical care. His training as a nurse was what finally helped him realize there was no hope.

Her parents were too, but they were unable to let her go when they needed to. She was almost 100% brain dead. The autopsy revealed she was only getting worse. She had not responded to anything in over 13 years. All she had was her reflexes which are stored in the brain stem. Any movement was an electrical impulse.
i've actually been studying this case. and i believe the husband and judges were right. the autopsy showed irreversible damage. no amount of therapy could help it. and as for him getting married, it's been 15 years!! there was no coming back, he even planned on being her nurse until he realized something that her parents never did. she's in a better place and much better now. euthanasia was the right thing in this case

I agree with euthanasia. Working in the medical system, I witness many people suffer. Most times it's the family that want fedding tubes or artificial respiration. WHY? Most people if they are not incapacitated, would not want that. Think about this; do we allow our pets to suffer? We are allowed to euthanise. The problem with the Schiavo case is that no one knew if she wanted to be on life support or not (There was no evidence). I have a nephew who survived drowning and has been in a persistent comatose state for 13 years... he is not suffering by being alive.

I just really hope everyone realizes that when her autopsy was done, Schiavo's brained weighed half that of a normal woman her height/weight/age. She had sustained massive brain damage and lost neurons in the cerebral cortex, the thalami, the basal ganglia, the hippocampus, the cerebellum, and the midbrain. She was in a Persistent Vegetative State. The autopsy found the damage was "irreversible, and no amount of therapy or treatment would have regenerated the massive loss of neurons."

This woman was in this condition because her brain didn't recieve enough oxygen for a brief amount of time. There have been no cases of a patient with an anoxic brain injury recovering after three years. The last 12 years of this woman's life were a wasted attempt trying to bring her back to normal functioning.

She was a casualty of a weight loss diet and she didn't get enough potassium, which is what destroyed her brain, leaving her a vegetable with no mental cognition of capacity whatsoever, which is why she was unable to respond to anything. She'd also requested that is such a thing happened to her, that she be unplugged.

Agreed. Even though I agree there was no hope for Terri's recovery, her husband planned it out perfectly. Once he one the $1million settlement against the doctor the only way he could keep that money is if he was T's legal guardian & nurse. He never divorced her even after fathering a child w/ someone else, became a nurse & a couple of months after getting his certificate he ordered a do not ressusitate for her & stuck her in a hospice. Jerk played the system well.

The settlement of which most of it he couldn't even touch. He had a right to the loss of consortium the rest went to Terri's care which dried up over a 15 year period to the point that she was on medicaid the last years of her life. Schiavo could have walked away anytime he wanted. In fact he could have pulled the plug years ago but instead decided to have a court decide what to do.

@lauraleesmithagain sorry, but you're wrong. He was awarded for LOSS OF CONSORTIUM, which means the phusical loss of his WIFE; he did not have to remain her guardian in order to keep the money. The vast majority of the settlement went to pay for her medical care. His training as a nurse was what finally helped him realize there was no hope.

splattergirl, he received less than 750k and most of that went to medical bills. He was offered MILLIONS to let her parents have guardianship. He was showing love and compassion. Her parents were too, but they were unable to let her go when they needed to. She was almost 100% brain dead. The autopsy revealed she was only getting worse. She had not responded to anything in over 13 years. All she had was her reflexes which are stored in the brain stem. Any movement was an electrical impulse.

i've actually been studying this case. and i believe the husband and judges were right. the autopsy showed irreversible damage. no amount of therapy could help it. and as for him getting married, it's been 15 years!! there was no coming back, he even planned on being her nurse until he realized something that her parents never did. she's in a better place and much better now. euthanasia was the right thing in this case

I was convinced by the brain scan neurologist reporting a "flat line" while she was alive for crying out loud. A lot of the brain had already turned to water so it was impossible for voluntary movements and for the brain to even see or do much other than be. Involuntary movements may look purposeful but where's the cerebral cortex which controls purpose? It's gone. I no longer see her husband as an evil creature.

Why? because he cares about her! Sure, he moved on and started a family, his wife was in a PVS for 15 years! It wasn't a smile. It was rigor in her face from neurological death. You need a cerebral cortex to do something even as simple as smile. She had no cerebral cortex by this time. The sad part ought to come when you consider that they let the shell of who she once was continue to go on like this for so many years. That is the inhumanity.

You're a maniac fool. Read the back ground of this case further. No signs of trauma or other force was found. Not even within the first hour she was taken to hospital (1990).

How can you be so insensitive? Disabled people are still people, and they have suffered more than you can imagine. I hope some day, you will have the smallest portion of the suffering they endure, then maybe you'll understant. Until then know that my neice is disabled and is the sweetest human being you could ever hope to met. She has enhanced the lives of those around her in ways you can't even imangine!! If her brain capacity was zero, she would not have been able to breathe or regulate her heart beat on her own. Those functions are controlled by the brain stem, she still had her brain stem. She was alive, that's what the big deal is. Perhaps you should educate yourself a little more on physiology before you make such a profound comment

moron.. in which way is "brain capacity" related to heart beats? capacity implies a container - contains what ? info. When you speak of brain capacity you speak of the ability to store memories and such.
in this context, all the heart has to do with the brain is that electric impulses are sent out from there to for example regulate the heart beat.

The problem with the Schiavo case is that no one knew if she wanted to be on life support or not (There was no evidence). I have a nephew who survived drowning and has been in a persistent comatose state for 13 years... he is not suffering by being alive.
