the dam wasnt necessarily build poorly to the standards back then, but one main issue that caused the dam to fail was that they filled up the reservoir behind it too fast. earthen dams need time to settle and build strength, but the almost full reservoir behind it plus not allowing time to settle caused the dam to fail. it was a few simple mistakes that lead to one of the greatest disasters of eastern idaho. a total of 11 people died, including a man fishing below the dam

the dam was build to help irrigation in the area. the whole area surrounding the dam is dry farms, also, besides the river valley, the general area around the dam was untouched by the flood, that is until the land flattened out. the city i went to school at, Sugar city in Madison county was completely submerged, as well as the city of Teton and part of Rexburg.

The Teton Dam collapsed in June 1976. It was part of a huge spate a dams built int he middle part of the century by Bureau of Rec, many of which had almost no purpose, and made no sense economically. The dam itself was built on unstable, highly permeable ground. I don't know how global warming causes dam collapses?
