I've never really understood why we Indians in general, believe that fairer people are more attractive. It's implied in almost everything. It's like there's a desire to be Western / Caucasian, as evidenced in nascent Bollywood films. I think as long as someone is attractive, it doesn't matter that much what colour someone is, unless they're too white / dark

Unfortunately, that's how it is. But you have to realize that the "fair-skinned" races - Europeans/Americans - also spent immense amounts of time and money trying to become darker - by going to tanning saloons or beaches. It's just how people are - the dark try to get fair and the fair try to get dark. The only difference is that the "dark-skinned" races make it more obvious - at least Indians - think British colonization. But I don't enough space for psychological effects of that here. :)
