Churchill: Have you not got a single General that can wine battles?
Most of Britons army's could not wine any battles in the beginning of the war. They soldiers fought brave but most British generals were stupid and almost made Britten lose the war. Thanks that the Royal Navy and the Royal Air force had smarter leaders and brave staff. It were the Royal Navy and the Royal Air force that saved Britten.
People were well-read back in the 1940s and earlier, and the average Briton may have realized that the loss of Singapore meant Japs could overrun the Dutch East Indies south of Singapore and Malaya and also advance eastward toward Ceylon, India and Burma. The loss of the Dutch Indies opened a route for the Japs to invade and conquer Australia. The loss of Singapore would have been seen as a vital blow by the average Briton.
Do you know, I'm not altogether convinced that the proverbial 'man-in-the-street' knew or cared where Singapore was or what happened to it while Britain was being bombed flat by Germany. Churchill was an Imperialist to the core, but to the people sheltering down the Tubes in London, the "fall" of Singapore probably didn't seem so important.
@nmlt5398 The fall of Singapore was a DEVASTATING loss that everyone thought appalling. It was the worst British surrender EVER. It also came during the nadir of the Allied effort -- Russia still looked like it was going to lose, the US fleet was mostly lying at the bottom of Pearl Harbor, the Philippines were quickly being conquered, Rommel was pushing forward in North Africa, and the U-Boats were having a second "happy time" sinking allied vessels.
Ô England, past beauty and deep green hills, Combes and hedges, from the beaches to the feilds. Crumpets and butter, tea'd down December nights, Amidst family warmth and fireplace lights. England, how i miss your soul's delight, land she once was, but where now we must fight the enemies within, wherever they may blight In the shadows of Churchill's darkest night. Old England... The old, the never ending memory... Pastures, fluffy clouds, blue skies... bright and free !
@meanmopar426: Hi there freind. Please feel free to pass the poem on to others. This was the England of my childhood, the England i used to know. I wrote the poem. Thank you for your comment and reply. I left England at the age of ten. She's been in the back of my mind ever since, even though that England does'nt exist any more.
@RasMajnouni: I don't believe destroying the cities in Germany made a difference. Harris thought so but instead the German people became just more obstinate and the regime even harsher.
@RasMajnouni Since I do differentiate between all Germans in WW2 and the Nazis, what I wrote was very stupid.I am sorry & apologize. Besides, your opinion might be correct since the army made the decsions & not a Democratic Parliment of the German people.

You gotta love this time period.
"Oh, don't worry. Just a minor heart attack. Pass me a cigar and a double brandy."
And the tough son of a bitch lived until he was 90 years old, too. Fueled only by cigars and booze. And bacon strips. lol.

@odracirllab That's like saying "When you can't have your woman, bugger a man & keep buggering on".
"Bomber Harris" fed the Nazis saukraut & then then stuck em with a large thick liverwurst! Turned the tide of the war in Europe.
