Love seeing these old broadcasts, especially Mr. C, but am always amazed at how dominate the tobacco industry was in early television, only to be banned from it by the 1970s. The sixties for better or for worse, mostly better I think, transformed the world for all time. Who says liberals have never done any good for this country?
Perry originally appeared on "THE CHESTERFIELD SUPPER CLUB" on NBC radio every weeknight between 1944 and 1950- and his first TV broadcasts were simulcasts of the Friday night radio show heard on the West Coast). Martin Block and Durward Kirby (cigarette in hand) were the announcers....Arthur "Santa" Godfrey was also sponsored by Chesterfield on CBS radio at the time. By 1950, Perry was on CBS-TV three nights a week in a 15 minute show for Chesterfield...
WOW! Amazing! Rare footage from Perry's very first Television broadcast on Christmas Eve, 1948 and another rarity - clips from a 1950 episode of the Perry Como Show. Perry, you're the greatest!
Santa "Smoke 'em by the carton" Godfrey. Thank God that Chesterfields took that old troll from us!

Oh I get it, you're saying that cigarettes are unhealthy and advertised in a cynical manner.
It was so subtle I almost missed it.

Smoking rates started going downward in the 60s. The 50s (Republicans!) were the peak years of smoking
