It doesn't necessarily have to be running, but it's a great example. And by reading he means to soak up as much information as possible and to never stop learning. This doesn't have to be done through just reading, there's many videos you can watch to get that information as well! There's deeper meaning to what he's saying.
Its funny how he said this in 2005 and to this day in 2011 I make damn sure to always get up and run at least 3 miles a day. in rain, snow,, on vacation, Hurricane whatever. this man truly inspired me :)

He is being concise. One could say that listening is part of his "reading" philosophy. Listening/reading is the same in that we should learn from others (who have been through the same). If you can imagine him having added in listening to this speech don't you think that his speech for reading and listening would be very very similar in essence, and therefore unnecessary (especially in a short speech to kids).

Friends, I Love Mr. Will Smith. I have watched this video over and over. "Running" could be an analogy for whatever we are "running" in our lives...a new business venture, home and family, developing friendships, overcoming illness and financial challenges.

Lol @ the people who interpret this as meaning if you run more you become successful. He's trying to tell you to never give up, not become a long distance runner or whatever.

Actually, I think he means to physically run. Speaking from a pro runner. I can tell you...that voice he speaks of...is very familiar to me. Constant effort to overcome. I believe you can take his statement quite literally.

He's trying to help you with a never give up attitude, wherever you find it through whatever exercise. Some people can't run due to joint problems etc. He means just keep working.

@PedoBearJr It's ignorant to assume that "everyone else" who puts their faith in Jesus is unhappy. Seems to me the unhappiest people in the world are those that think a "rich future" will create the happiness for them, therefore they feel they have the need to criticize someone's faith.
