I finished watching this series this morning and I loved it so much! Loved the ending, it really surprised me! I also just read your review on a forum and then I realised that you're also the person who made this video. Watching this video without spoilers and hearing the music was great! I would probably have watched this series anyway because I'm a huge Kimura Takuya fan, but I'm so glad I watched it now. I recommend this series to everyone!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the feedback. I always worry that this video is too boring (given the exciting nature of the drama!), but I can't show the best parts or else I'd spoil half the magic for people watching it for their very first time. And my primary goal remains spreading the word about this wonderful television program and getting more people to watch it. I still hope that one day we might see it available for purchase in our home countries with domestic subtitles.
@SuiginChou It would be great to be able to buy series like this outside of Asia. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know! I've been telling all my friends about this series, but no one seems to be interested.. I guess it would be more popular if more countries would broadcast it and I really hope that will happen someday.
I just watched the first episode and can't wait to watch the rest! I also love the music :) I agree with you, J-dramas should be available to purchase around the world. I live in the Netherlands and there are so many people here who don't even know about these amazing J-dramas..
Just listening to this music brings so many conflicting emotions in me. It was an incredible experience watching this drama. Got to admit by the end of the last episode my family couldn't recognize me cos of how much my eyes puffed up due to tears. Thanks for the video.
Definitely one of the best dramas I've ever watched. The actors, the sets used, and the music made the whole series seem like one long movie instead of separate episodes.
You did an excellent job here. I showed it to my mom who does not speak Japanese and never saw the show before but she was drawn to the drama by your video. I loved the drama myself and thought it was very powerful. I wondered if we can purchase this in the US. Regardless, great selection of photos along wth the music! Thanks for taking the effort to make this! :)
Takuya is exceptionally talented. And this series is one of his best. I'd love to see him in more major productions. What ever happened to "I Come with the Rain" - I was hoping for a theatrical release in the US. But, I think it's out in Blu-Ray in January 2010.
The movie was ,,,I want to say "Only Takuya was great! when he was an innocent boy,he was totally an innocent boy, but with so many maggots. When he was the savior, ,,, you can imagine how he became the savior,,. The director's intention, that I'm not sure. But I say Takuya was the perfect . " I hope he appears major movie productions a lot. English,,, just need practice,,. Hope you still like "Takuya".
@ susan: Yes, I have! You're right, Takuya was the best. His performance was heart breaking. I hope he moves away from all of the pop stuff and focuses more on drama - or even horror. I always enjoy watching Kimutaku, and I think the west would embrace him if he had just a bit more exposure.
Though Kimura hasn't appeared for TV dramas produced in countries of the Asian area, but huge number of people in Asia areas know him. When I watch TV news, magazines of the Asian area, I think he has huge cultural influence in Asia zone. I don't understand why people in major movie productions overlooks it. At first they should get Kimura if they want to catch an Asian market.
Cable TV packages have an 'Asia Network' with popular dramas. etc. But they're only Korean and Chinese - there's no Japanese programming! We only get the occasional Anime on Cartoon Network, and those are ruined with bad English dubbing. If we had the Japanese Networks on board with Time Warner, Kimura would become an instant hit, along with all of the other great Japanese actors. Such a shame - Americans crave Japanese culture, and yet these markets are virtually ignored. Take Care! :)
I've been a bit over excited to know a person with the opinion similar to me. So, I don't bother you any more. Don't even reply me. Just wanted say "Thanks a lot!"
Takuya Kimura , performing amazing acting skill in this TV drama. If someone talks about the best drama he ever played, the one must be "Karei Naru Ichizoku "(華麗なる一族)!
For English speakers, the previous three comments (in <5 min translation for meaning over literalness):
motoya00cream: I think that this drama is amazing!
maikof provided the name of the composer of the song. I don't know why, but it's welcome information as I'm 100% for giving credit where credit is due! :)
mapp2tube: The song's even better when listening to it along with these pictures. I'm grateful [to you] for uploading this!
I just watched the last ep. again today. I cried like I have never cried before. It is a tryly master piece. I think this drama is definitely on the top of my list. Highly recommend.
I'm currently at episode 9, have just watched the 8th episode and I must say... wow. This is definitely one of the top 3 jdramas I have ever seen! I have watched around 25 full jdramas so far from all ages, but this one... It's so powerful... The acting, the music, the attention to detail, the story... everything. Some scenes are just jaw dropping. I can't WAIT to see how this fantastic series ends!!! I recommend everyone to try this series out, it's worth it! And thanks for posting this video.
I had to remove somebody's very kind reply because unfortunately in his very last sentence he spoiled how the show ends.
Much of the tension in watching Karei Naru Ichizoku for the first time comes from not knowing how things will play out for the Manpyou family. For that very reason, I advise you to *NOT* reference this outcome in your replies. Vague things like "I liked the ending" or "I hated the ending" are fine, as are broad series-wide comments like "this show was so sad".
Btw, if you're reading this message, Mr. or Mrs. Person Whose Reply I Deleted, please do reply again! I appreciated your reply, it's just that I felt that your second-to-last line set the stage for a big spoiler and then your final line which began with the word "But" basically *did* spoil the ending: because when you say "I was hoping for A, but ..." people know that A must not be what happens in the end. And that's what I want to avoid: spoiling the mystery for first-time viewers. :)
one of the most powerful dramas there is. the effect watching this lingers even days after finishing the series. i can't pick between this and sora kara furu ichioku no hoshi as my #1. thank you for the vid ^__^
You are welcome. I hope that you will politely recommend the show to others. As more and more people see it, the odds of someone in a position of power seeing it go up, and that person may be inclined to bring the show over to the West, either subtitled or re-filmed with a Western cast. I know most of us would prefer the former, but even the latter would be a blessing if it allows J-dramas to finally penetrate the Western market. (For relevant examples, think of Meteor Garden or My Sassy Girl.)
No need to ask, it's always on top of my head whenever asked for a recommendation or my top favorites. The writing is brilliant, the acting is solid, and the production is amazing that it nurtured and maximized the potential of the story and of its cast. I love and adore Kimura, but this is the first drama that totally blew me away not because of his hotness but because of his talent in acting. Just remembering the story makes me teary-eyed already. As I said before, its impact lingers.
I have to confess bias: I didn't recognize Teppei's actor until *after* I'd already seen all of Karei Naru Ichizoku. Only then did I learn, "Omg! He's one of the members of SMAP!" The funny thing is, I learned this and it was so shocking to me because I had been telling people how the young man who plays Manpyou Teppei is one of the best young adult actors I've ever seen, and they didn't believe me. Now I know why! ^^; They see KimuTaka and not a bonafide actor. But good god: the man can act!!
May I ask you where you found the novel? and, if it was an internet retailer, do they accept Visa or MasterCard and do they ship to the continental United States for less than 40% of the cost of the book?
Thank you. ^_^ I did not realize that it was 3 volumes! o_o
Is it one volume for each of the Manpyous? (Keisuke, Daisuke, Teppei)? I have heard that the original book is all from Daisuke's point of view, but is it possible that Volume 1 is his childhood, Volume 2 is his early marriage years, and Volume 3 formed the bulk of the television drama?
i've only read up until the middle part of the second volume but so far the story has revolved mostly around daisuke. however characters like teppei, aiko, and mima also have major roles. keisuke has only appeared in flashback scenes. the book starts with the scene of new year's day at the shima kanko hotel. the book is heavy on discussions about banking and finance so it might seem to drag on if you don't have interest in such matters. personally i do find it interesting.
Please do not downvote somebody for writing "please buy DVD." In general, it is a good idea for fans of excellent dramas like this one to reimburse the men and women who made it. He never said "don't download fansubs," he just said "please buy the DVDs." There's a difference.
I do hear your frustration, though. There is still no North American or European release on DVD or Blu-Ray with English subtitles. Very unfortunate. :( But this is why I made this video!! To raise global awareness! :)
I did not intend to key in on the male stars but rather the MAIN stars. :) It is an accident of circumstance that there were only two main characters in this drama -- Daisuke and Teppei -- and that both were male. I agree that Takasu Aiko and Tsuruta Fusako are underrepresented given the importance of their roles, but that's because I had few suitable pictures of them at the time. Kimura Takuya and Kitaoji Kinya are both so expressive, I took many screen-captures of them while watching!
This drama is EPIC!

I re-re-re-re-re- watched all episodes. countress! Now, I can not wait Takuya's new drama. Nankyoku Tairiku {The Antarctic Continent}!
Check it in drama wiki wikipedia!
Takuya will play the geologist of Antarctic Continent Japan observation team in the 50s of the Showa era {1955-1965} .
