We where all products of our time, and the quality of the scratching was "up2date" in 1987. furthermore, many Europeen dj's at that time still did "runin" mixes, and just non hip hop records. But when looking back, it was great experience, and we had to start some where. Not that I had any chances of winning in 87, but my mix was interupted by a "mistake" from the soundengineer, suddenly leaking some music from the soundbooth, and forced me to stop mixing and start over again.
Great to see this again, I was in the crowd that night. CJ started a new craze of Transforming between the decks, which for budding DJ's across the country was a great new way to express their art. I got a good look at sue pollard too!! Has anyone got footage of Chad Jackson on this nite?
@DjGaryMillar01 i went to the madison on that night and cj was in a different league blew everyone away was walking round the decks on the stage while still scratching....excellent!!!
@djalvind totally agree with you man, this guy was one of the pioneers of the cut in the uk, his scratching was ahead of its time then, he had his own clean style and scratched on some brilliant records in the 80s..
he influenced people and is a legend regardless of some of these comments.. every man and his dog have a set of decks now and think there gods gift cos they can crab or somet cos theve watched some cheesy utube tutorial..
back in the days u learned yourself & ure own style
@martynpank Yes it won because back then this was a new concept and if you were around at the same time I bet CJ would have kicked your ass too as you wouldn't have had access to the internet or had the headstart that every dj has today with non skip needles, mixer faders that are effortless etc. Back then it was a LOT harder and you couldn't hide behind a crab scratch all night.
@maccagrabme ".....and if you were around at the same time..." Mac? I'm 45! I am comparing this to 1986! Dj Cheese was a far better mix! As Dj Cheese 'set the bar' For the next year. I thought it would have been a little better! .........esp. when you consider what was to come in the DMC chanpionships!
@martynpank You have to cast your mind back to what things were like then. The transformer scratch was brand new and he had good control over it pretty early on, much better than most if not all Uk djs at that time. That would have sounded awesome at the time as it still sounds pretty clean even though he was using a switch. Of course DJ Cheese was a much better overall scratcher but I'm not even sure that he was even transforming at the time if at all. The crab today is the equivalent.
@maccagrabme Thanks Mac! I have a had another listen! I think the sound quality is very poor & if it wasn't overtaken by the F*****g row of the crowd, I could make a better judgement! Respect & regards! Pank.
@maccagrabme PS. I too, think that alot of DJ's hide behind the 'Crab Scratch' & seen a DMC mix where a guy 'Crab-Scratched' for the whole mix! That ain't talent! A Baboon could do that! LOL!
@martynpank THIS GUY WAS FIVE YEAR IN FRONT OF EVERYONE ELSE IN THE UK AT THE TIME, THIS GUY WAS THE FIRST GUY TO PERFORM THE TRANSFORM SCRATCH. I WATCHED THIS LIVE AND THEN I WATCH DJ CHESSE AND THEN I NEW HE WAS IN A DIFFERENT LEAGUE AT THE TIME. SO TO ALL YOU BEDROOM DJ'S WHO THINK THIS IS NOT WORLD CLASS, THATS WHY YOU ARE BEDROOM DJ'S.
@67fordie If you are only going to speak to me in capital letters, ie. SHOUTING! Then, do one! If you want to talk as an adult, then I will continue! I will not accept a person who is forthright! .....................Actually, I can't be bothered! There are more important thngs in life than arguing about mixing! Just enjoy it!
this is a dodgey set he did but i know how good this guy was in the late 80s,, his scratching ability for the day was outstanding, i still love his style even now and have much respect for the guy..
and how into his set is that women passin him the tunes..
haha, its su pollard! i really wanted to slate it but it was suprisingly tight, well done CJ 'leaves a nasty taste in your mouth like chad jackson, dave pearce and simon harris' jackson

Cj appeared at my then residency.. The Madison nightclub in Middlesbrough.
he did a "Live" remix/cut of his MARRS classic "Pump Up The Volume" & Hashim's "Al Naa Fishe" & brought the house down!
Even today he's still one of my all time favourite dj's & still a force to be reckoned with.
Oh, those halcyon days!
Fabulous.. but they'll never be back - pure magic.
Thank you so much for this rare dmc treat.
Kind regards, Gary.

i remember those dj megamix battle albums on champion records.
The compilations had
chad jackson v dj cheese
whiz kid v jazzy jeff
cj mackintosh v streets ahead
cj also mixed on some upfront compilations on serious records
cj had some nice transformer scratches but you can tell his style was influenced by
rock the go go by robbie b & jazzy jay
tygaelement 2 years ago
i defo remember them, about 1987 they released two albums in the series as i recall.. it was defo champion records..
one mix was streets ahead and i think dj cheese did one, chad jackson might have joined in one of the earlier ones..
i have em somewhere, they got like an album and then a seperate disc with the mixes on
