I always find (and by your facial expression I assume you feel the same way) once you do get better, particularly at soloing, you barely notice it and just think, "oh ya, that was neat" until you listen to yourself from before and realized how much you've improved. Playing fast is cool but try doing some swingy or punctuated notes as well. Just my two cents.
