@dunsacc Good question. For about 90 years the rule was the you are out not out if the bat breaks and hit the wicket. The "whole bat" should hit the wicket. But in October 2010 a new rule was introduced according to which a player would be given "hit wicket" if a broken part of bat, even a splinter hits the wicket.
