Lots of plastic in this setup - any thought to a metal or wood container and hotplate with pan of wood chips on it? Has the added benefit of more heat options and greater smoke generation for the same degree of heat.
yes. it can set things on fire. type "bellingham, wa garage fire home-made cold smoker" into google (won't let me type link) mos def, NOT SAFE. Don't be fooled by the british accent- NOT A LEGIT IDEA.
@spudmanke what crap I made mine about 2 weeks (works brilliant thanks @ShrinkingDogma ) and I have left bacon smoking in there for about two hours and it was fine and as for the bit I quote Don't be fooled by the british accent I am British and take offence and only reason the garage burnt down is she used card board
@spudmanke highly unlikely i'd have thought if the chips are in a ceramic container at the kind of depth mine are at - even if it caught alight the flames wouldn't reach the lid! however almost no chance of that - sawdust doesn't sustain a flame unless packed fairly tightly and you keep blowing on it, even if you light it with a torch. Plus bottom of a ceramic pot the CO2 will extinguish it.
Gotta say I like the idea but I think you would have got better results from using new wood chips, it seems a bit silly not to use fresh chips every time when they are so cheap, still good work that man.
Listen - It's a cold smoker - so any food grade plastic (ie also dishwashr and MW proof) will not deteriorate in even hot smoke enviroments (typically about 100C or 212F) soo you could pipe smoke from a hotplate intot his box perfectly safely.
This is actually very clever but I would not recommend using the soldering iron for those kinds of periods - Its designed for short time usage and leavign it on for 12 hours insulated by wood chips to smoke some bacon is just asking for trouble imo.
Great idea, thanks for this! Perfectly safe for people with a bit of common sense
