  • The WCBS flip was only half of the shocker: the other half was the fact that its Chicago counterpart was also flipped to Jack at exactly the same time... fortunately, however, that station also returned to "normal," relaunched as "104.3 K-Hits."

  • Great!. I found out about the flip between 4 & 5 AM the next day, while working. I called JACK to say that I was unhappy with the change, & asked who I could write to. At first the guy on the phone was polite, but he turned into a wise guy, saying "You can write the station, you can write the Governor, you can even pray, but you'll never hear oldies on this station again." As I listened to Bob Shannon's show when the station returned, I wondered what the moron I had spoken to at JACK was doing

  • @ragamuffin92 What a lack of respect to the person who signs his paycheck: THE LISTENER !

  • Comment removed

  • JACK FM was the unofficial station of NAMBLA.

  • I remember the moment they switched. Never been so pissed in my life. And Bill Brown's intro to Rescue Me, classic. The man who was pretty much there the whole original oldies ride. Rest In Peace, Bill. You were the voice of my youth. Godspeed.

  • RIP Bill Brown. 10/9/11.

  • @pedrock1952 Have a good trip, Mr. Brown. Thanks for having had the guts to mention on air that something was happening !...

  • Three years ago today ( June 3 rd ) that dark day came over us.......

  • @101Wcbsfm Thanks for posting and reminding !....

  • @Pookatube Fresh 102.7 is iightm but i'll defnitley agree with the sucking up of 92.3 NOW

  • I remember banning 101.1 FM from my car radio when it became JACK. It stayed that way until it CBS-FM truly returned.

As for the person who wished for a return of the "Doo-Wop Shop," I agree that those listeners should be thrown some kind of lifeline.

  • @Buccanadien Agreed as well. Being a DJ myself in Québec, Doo-wop songs are always popular !

  • It's about time they start destroying the racist ass stations. they only hired white dj that tried to sound black. and the funny part is that they played 80% black music. I love watching all these chr, oldies and top 40 stations turn into rap stations. and now they continue hiring fake dj's

  • 9 minutes and 47 seconds of buildup and we didn't get Jack.

  • @reverendflash Sorry.

  • @musicguy550 exactly

  • It took over one thousand days, but we are now the NUMBER ONE radio station in NYC! Thankyou to everyone for making it possible!!!

  • Yes, I am the one you referred to. I was taping at home on 6/5 as it was a special show and I wanted to have a recording of it. When I came home from the city that day I had to go out again and continued to record not for any particular reason. Everyone at BBKings that morning had a fantastic time. Chad Brown was there.

  • On behalf of all true WCBS-FM lovers, a sincere THANK YOU to have kept history ...and loving 101,1 !!!

  • Not in a million years did I know I would be recording radio history (bad history). And Micky Dolenz did get to do show #101 when he hosted the Sunday night CBS-FM Radio Greats show on Superbowl Sunday about 2 years ago.

I'm just very glad the station came back.

  • Vive le vrai WCBS-FM !!! LOLLL

  • I can easily imagine how Dolenz was happy to continue what's been bluntly broken ! The atmosphere must have been terrific !

  • I was at BBKings for Micky Dolenz's 100th show celebration and recording CBS-FM at home on 6/3/05 - never knowing what would take place later on that day.

  • Yeah, they were definitely expecting show 101 !... The atmosphere was just electric ! Why was it ?

  • ...and why were you taping CBS-FM ?

  • Are you the Linda Cohen my presentation text is refering to ?

  • the great harry harrison

  • The Morning Mayor !!!

  • JACK? Off.

  • And every station that CBS and ClearChannel have touched, has turned into bland, boring, dull crap. The same songs in every town on every station they own. SiriusXM is the only radio left worth a damn. Shame.

  • André Arthur, famous Québec radio & TV host, treated like pre-JACK DJ's: "On prive les animateurs de faire leur dernier show. J'aurais juste aimé avoir un p'tit 10 minutes la dernière journée". (Aug. 18, 2009)

  • @rigaudien What exactly is JACK? Like why was this such a controversy and whatnot?

  • Good question ! JACK is a "no-DJ" style of radio station. The switch made monster comments because it's been made 1- to a station very well-known in NYC and 2- bluntly, without any DJ having a minute to say goodbye to the listeners. Translation of André Arthur's statement: "They deprive DJs of doing their last show. I would just have liked to have a little 10 minutes on the last day". More info at w w w . w c b s . o r g. Merci for your comment !

  • I remember the day this happened. It was around 11 pm or so that evening and I put on 101.1 in my car. I heard them playing "Obsession" by Animotion and after it was over I heard this strange ID for a station that was obviously not CBS-FM. What's funny about this is that for next few days, Jack was still airing CBS-FM promo ads.

  • Thanks for the comment !

  • But I'm still wondering: what made Bill Brown guess what was happening ?

  • An emergency station meeting had been called for 4PM (the time Bill's show was ending), and that of course was the meeting where they were all fired. The meeting had only been announced two hours earlier, but Bill didn't know until a few minutes before. So Bill sensed trouble.

  • Thanks for letting us know ! His reaction proved he was probably aware that, in radio, switches can be very blunt and badly-mannered. As André Arthur said (cf my comment somewhere else here), DJ's sometimes can't even have 10 minutes to thank the people who make the station being alive: the listeners. I'd like to read other DJ's similar experiences if possible ?...

  • Chad Brown, the man who turned down WCBS-FM... like "Dick Rowe, the man who turned down the Beatles" !

  • Oh...BTW... I wonder what happened to the guy who mad the now infamous decision? I hear he is managing a Mickey D's on Long Island. So much for incompetency in the workplace!

  • What is a Mickey d's ?

  • Mickey D's is McDonald's

  • Oh boy !....

  • Do you know what's his name ?

  • The person involved in the indamous format switch was named Chad Brown.

  • @Pookatube

And now we hear that Chad Brown is a Manager of a McDonald's on Long Island!

  • "Good" for him !

  • @Pookatube chad brown is also working with justin gaurini at mcdonald's also LOL

  • Now let's hope CBS come to their senses and Bring Back BOTH 92.3 K-ROCK and 102.7 WNEW FM, the place where ROCK LIVES...AGAIN!!!

    Fresh 102.7 and 92.3 Now...SUCKS!!!

  • @Pookatube - Unfortunately, much as I'd also like to see that, it won't happen...both Fresh 102.7 and 92.3 Now are doing quite well in the ratings, so I don't see CBS Radio switching them back anytime soon.

  • All I can say is it's great to have the station back!!

  • Agreed !!!!!

  • Same here.

  • It was such a mistake to ever take this station off the air. I'm so happy it's back and hope it never goes away. If only they'd play doowop shop!!

  • Good point ! Let them know !

  • what did Bill Brown say?? I didnt hear anything

  • "Did you ever feel the urge of just kind of scream "RESCUE ME !!!" ? I'm beginning to get that feeling..." My question is still: what made him guess what was going to happen ? (Thanks for posting !)

  • sneaky bastard execs !!!!

  • The day when WCBS-FM started JACKing off for two years.

  • ...with an audience drop that probably spoke by itself !...

  • It's amazing how they didn't know about the upcoming switch. When Randy Davis signed off, he said, "Bill Brown is next. I'll see you Monday!"

  • Exactly ! But my question is still: What made Bill Brown guess what was about to happen ? (listen to his part). Thanks for posting anyways, nice of you ! (I'm a DJ myself)

  • That was probably when they announced it to everyone there, during Bill's show.

  • Possibly, yes. Too bad we cannot know exactly. Being a DJ myself, I admit I'm a bit curious about what made Mr. Bill react... Thanks for posting !

  • Good job on this!

  • Thanks !
