Last I heard, Francis was having some SLIGHT CONSIDERATIONS about pulling out the script for The Godfather 4...however, to be very frank, I think I saw the book as complete within the first two films. The third one was good, but not that good. I think another film (especially so long after) would do extreme damage to both Coppola's repuation and the series. I don't see how a fourth installment could work. I really don't.
damn hollywood! lol! I mean nowdays they come out with all these crappy remakes but here you had mario wanting to write yet another epic that would have made hollywood millions! And yet they didn't do it smh..
@g6686not i agree completely! i'm not saying the 3rd movie was horrible, it was good, but that's it. when i saw the 1st & 2nd one, i LITERALLY stood silent after the credit was over, thinking "wow wtf? wow that was... wow.. wow wow" and then i saw the 3rd one and i didn't get struck. i was more like, "what?!! oh no he didn't!" well so yea anyway, i think it would've been more awesome if they'd gone with mario's version with the background stories of each character :)
@g6686not The Godfather 4 was originally supposed to go right into early stages of production in early 1999, however there were some set backs. Unfortunately Mario Puzo passed away before any negotiations could be shared. Francis Ford Coppola still retains the FILM RIGHTS...so IF he wanted to adapt a fourth installment, he could easily do so as Hollywood nor any studio in Hollywood doesn't own the rights and can't do it, Hollywood's been trying to get the rights, but FFC is smart, luckily.
One of the early plots had Michael's son as a young Army counter-ops officer who repudiated his father. Tony was recruited by the CIA to organize a coup against an unfriendly South American country. Michael's enemies learn of this and conspire to have Tony killed as their revenge against Michael. But Michael is able to have Tony rescued and the conspirators killed. The end was to have been Michael and Tony reunited with Tony part of the "family" and his father's successor.
For years Coppola swore he'd never do a third GF movie. But some flop films that his company (American Zoetrope) financed put him hugely in debt by the late 80's. So he finally accepted Paramount's offer.
i tink the 3rd godfather is as good as the first 2. i would love to see a new 1 as mario puzo described although i tink its far to late 2 do it, and that it should never b done
Im so sad that Mr. Mario Puzo died, and this tragic event kinda stopped the production of another Great movie from the great series. It would be great to see how the Corleones made their way to what they were in The Godfather 1,2 and 3. From what Ive heard it would also tell the story of how Michael's son Anthony became a Don, and turned the Corelone family into more of a Drug Cartel. RESPECT to Mario Puzo for making that story of lust, love, betrayal and the movie and book that is my favourite
I have the utmost respect for Mario Puzo's writing skills. I read The Godfather I was amazed. I read The Last Don and was just taken by the vision of this man and when I read Omerta which in my opinion is the best of the Mafia triology of Puzo's i was flat out enthralled. Great writer and everybody should read his work
Easily in my top ten books of all time. You will not be able to put it down. I just read it for the second time last week and I did it in 3 days. An American masterpiece, very well written.
i think when he said to his father i saw you killing don finoci and after robing a bank so his father told him be a lawyer, a lawyer wit a brief case can steal more money than a 100 men with guns. so he told his father that he want's to get into family bussines (mafia)
it would be cool to have a Godfather 4 of flasbacks of Vincent (Andy Garcia) being the Boss, and how, like Mario said, the rise of Sonny and the Corleone Empire.
you mean flashbacks of sonny and the rise and micheal going into the army and how luca brasi got to be so feared and in regular time show the demise of the corleone family in vincents hands
don't mean the other way around the rise of the corleone family their stregths luca brasi and offer he can't refuse part shown and the demise of the corleone family where vincent gets the family mixed up in drugs and gets killed without any offspring leaving no chance for the corleone family to survive for a part 5
thats true. In the case of the godfather it was succesfull. But hollywood tends to ruin some of the greatest books. Look at some of the stephen king books who have been turned in to movies.
NBC-TV did the same to Anne Rice by dropping her Vampire miniseries after she already signed the contract. And what they did to Battlestar Galactica and Knight Rider.
Puzo at least had some humility when he spoke of his writing opposed to someone like John Milius who is a total egomaniac. Has anyone else heard the talk about Coppola and underage girls - Francis doesn't seem like that kind of a guy but maybe his hero is the fellow-italian Davinci who liked them young.
No, III is HORRIBLE. Sofia Coppola is a black mark on the film, as is the very poorly conceived dialog. The entrance of Joe Mantegna is the jump-the-shark moment of the trilogy.
@kolatian I Agree! is really good, not a masterpiece but end well the trilogy, I dont like the action of pacino, like the 2 first, change a lot... I cry a lot at the end of the 3, the end of an era
The last godfather is horrible. It should have been about Connie's attempt to restore the crime family by attempting to place her son in the position of being the new don. They could have contrasted this with Puzo's desire to show the rise of Vito's family just as FFC contrasted Michael and Vito in GF2.
Mario Puzo is just a genius.

gunner23 2 years ago
@gunner23 Maybe it was because when he was a child, he saw his father killing another man
and the godfather believe that every man have his own destiny, and the destiny of sonny is to become a killer
