Accent or not, her speech pattern is what really betrays her formative language influence. You can modify your vowels and change your pronunciation but it is very difficult to fake cadence and inflection, and her speech pattern is genuinely British WHEN she's with other Brits.

I love her British accent. I think she should have kept the accent after she moved here, but what kid doesn't want to fit in? Anyone who only remembers growing up in one place and then all of a sudden moving across an entire ocean to a place that is so different than what you're used to, I wouldn't be happy about it either. And of all places she had to land here in Michigan, poor kid. I was born and raised in MI, about 35 minutes south of Grand Rapids, and I can't wait to leave.

I can relate, living in france for a year, when I came back I pronounced words with a french accent completely unintentionally. it does seem weird that you watch her on an american show and shes speaking with an american accent, and shes on british shows speaking with a british accent. It seems like she might be faking it, but it is possible that being around people of a certain accent causes her to speak that way. I know that living in another country, my speaking dialect became greatly changed

My grandmother had a strong accent for her whole life. Once you've got it you've got it. Jillian actually sounds like an American trying to do a British accent.

As for Madonna, that was just pathetic. She was from Detroit were they have the worlds worst accent, and she kept trying to sound british. Was like the 'wrong side of the tracks' trying to sound upper crust. Fail!

As she says in the interview, she lived here, she grew up in Crouch End from 2 to 11 so the first "accent" she learnt was RP. Now, when she's talking with British people, she talks with the RP, when she talks with an American, she speak with an American accent, she can't controle it. And I think that's what makes her so special and talented as an actress. :)
