The only external hard drive I've ever had that failed was a seagate, and it was newer than my Maxtor ext. harddrive which keeps working years later.. I would not buy another seagate.

@MrTpengineer Hmmm... all I know is the Maxtor One Touch 4 (500GB)I bought like four to five years ago is still going strong and the Seagate (500Gb) external drive I bought like about two years ago crapped out after only a year or so, locked up, and had to be thrown out. I guess it all just depends on if you get a good one or not. I don't trust any of them and I back up my back up just to be safe.

@MrTpengineer when I say it "locked up" more precisiely it made the clicking noise but wouldn't work. I've had it happen in a couple of desktops in the past, too, once after having it shipped to me, maybe the rough handling damaged it. But the desktop failures were not Maxtor, they were either Western digital or seagate, i just don't remember which one at this time.

@videobserver22 if its making that sound. or a clicking sound every few second that means the Head that reads the disc inside the HD is about to fail. All hard drives have a life span, depends on how much you use. in the end they all die. even a new HD can fail on you. I would back up that hard drive ASAP... coz it can die on you any time... One more thing the bigger the HD the more chances that it can fail on you for no reason avoid buying anything over 1tb
