People who support you all know that no matter how many candles it takes, no matter how much we sacrifice to make asinine videos, or how they try to stop us by ignoring all of the hollow, suburban, pretentious things we do, we will win this moral war against the slaughter in Rwanda; not with a gun or a helicopter or a battleship, but with our souls and our remote presence sitting in Northern Europe of North America saying we are standing beside them. We just need a candle, a camera, and an ego.
there's also a [very] good film about what happened in Rwanda called Hotel Rwanda. I had the opportunity to watch this film in my freshman World Studies class three years ago and I was extremely moved by it.

I don't get how a candle solves or helps any cause. That is unless some place needs light to see. This action thing of lighting a candle is more harmful than good because it ignores all the other genocide going on in other places and ignores all the past genocide as if rwanda is the only place this has ever happened to or in. There is a rather famous saying: those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I know it's not easy to remember these things, it's not easy to learn about, and you don't want to know that things like this can happen. But they can happen. The people in this video are trying to do a good thing and remember these people and give hope, and there is nothing wrong with that. How about doing something that is actually beneficial to these people. Does anyone know of groups that send supplies of seeds, medical supplies, or volunteers to these impoverished people. Is it safe for western volunteers to even enter Ruwanda? I seriously doubt the Ruwandans who were the victim's of a genocidal campaign are going to be looking at Youtube's streaming video. But it is a nice gesture and it does raise awareness. We could make some lasting friends in that part of the world.
Directfire, let us know if you can identify an honest organization that does good work in these third world countries that are going through so much of hardship.. You know, we in the west can easily afford to send $5 from each weeks paycheck. . Most people will contribute as long as the money is spent well.

I don't get why people are ragging on this so much. If it matters to you so much, why are you on youtube when you could be doing something way more useful? Also, I think that if people can't afford to donate or aren't old enough to volunteer or whatever, this is something simple that people can do to show that we care. I know it's not easy to remember these things, it's not easy to learn about, and you don't want to know that things like this can happen. But they can happen. The people in this video are trying to do a good thing and remember these people and give hope, and there is nothing wrong with that. How about doing something that is actually beneficial to these people. Does anyone know of groups that send supplies of seeds, medical supplies, or volunteers to these impoverished people. Is it safe for western volunteers to even enter Ruwanda? I seriously doubt the Ruwandans who were the victim's of a genocidal campaign are going to be looking at Youtube's streaming video. But it is a nice gesture and it does raise awareness. We could make some lasting friends in that part of the world.

For people against the candles: it's an act to show people that we care and are going to help - that they have support, and that it's not their problem, it's the world's problem.
There's a great value in a small thing - or when a community collectively responds - that has a great effect on people. It may not be objective or scientifically provable, but it's there. People in Rwanda will actually see us showing our support. Of course we have to take political action, but it starts somewhere small

I'm sorry sir but you have an empty analogy. Nature is the life force of the people. I've spent decades watching the trials and tribulations of the peoples in Africa. Most of these countries just can not get it together. To make a long story short I believe they can't get it together because they have no long term abilities. They don't cooperate with long term thinking anywhere near the extent you see in most other cultures. This is an innate missing component, don't ask me why. I wish I knew.

Just because we left them with technology doesn't mean we helped them. We have to educate them about the technology so that they can help themselves. All the wars we have are instigated and supported by the same people. Poverty, corruption, pain and suffering, and death. Who has not had an injustice done to them?
