  • So cool that you lived in Amsterdam. I could've walked in to you. THERE WAS AN Amsterdam nerdfighter gathering? O well. Maybe if some time in the future there is one, I'll be there.

John I've been a fan of your books for quite some time but strangely enough I only found out about these vlogs very shortly, but, you guys are thoroughly awesome. I feel like I'm part of the nerdfighteria already. These vlogs cheer up my day. Keep on the awesomeness.

  • My father was in Rwanda, he still has nightmares about it

  • I love deep-voiced John.

  • umm did john kind of lie about his age in this video?!

  • @jellostormcaller Read the description ;)

  • I get the feeling that John isn't a unicorn warrior...

  • but, john, YOU'RE opposed to unicorns.

  • I'm a "new" nerdfighter, but in the last few months I've started watching all of your videos without making a comment. It's not because the other videos haven't been amazing and funny and cute times a billion, but because I just don't comment on videos. Maybe I should start doing that?

Anyway, I had to say how awesome you guys are, how awesome what you do are, and how awesome you make me feel. Thank you

  • Wait, I thought that we were supposed to hate unicorns, because they killed Tonks.

  • love this so much

  • I have that remote control :)

  • oh god i sarted crying, damn hormons..

  • I read We Wish to Inform You in my class about Rwanda at school. It really is a moving and eye opening book.

  • "Hotel Rwanda" was so moving, devastating and tragic. It broke my heart but by the end I was left with hope.

  • I wish I could have participated in this :[

  • Holy cazoo! I'm the first to comment on this video since four months ago!

  • Awww. I wish I knew about this so I could have participated.... :(

  • "An alliance with an alliance." That's from Will Grayson!!!

  • Did you say you were 26 years old? I think you said that you were 26 years old. Considering that you're older than Hank, and I know (for sure) that Hank was older than 26 when you made this video, this does not correlate with my knowledge of you. I'm thoroughly confused by your age-lie.

  • @JujuJade he's tired so he forgot what numbers were lol

  • DFTBA stands for don't forget to be awesome. correct?

  • wow... ray williams way funnier...

  • @poiislifelifeispoi you actually got to show have some kind sign of intelligens

  • Comment removed

  • 26?????

What happened to being in your thirties???

  • This is when you guys came on Pottercast, right?

I'm ashamed to admit that I checked out this channel around then, and decided not to subscribe... **cringes with horror and shame**. Then in June I looked again and decided I loved it. All due to the Chewy/Solo campaign, which I saw on MyLeaky and thought was funny.

  • 26. that's cute.

also, a lot of people actually are for genocide, but their way of making it acceptable to themselves is by saying "that wasn't genocide". for example the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

  • Why must I be so far behind and just find out about this now!?

Well, I'm lighting a candle in my heart, regardless.

    Hehe, Amsterdamy.

  • lol i have that remote too...the 0 button doesn't work...

  • I have the exact same TV-Remote. But it's mostly acting as a dust collector.

  • ...i though you were 31

  • Yes. That'll work. I'll get a tea candle and light it, but I haven't got a video, so I rely on you to tell those people with whom we quite literally almost stand side-by-side in Rwanda that I did that.

I will light one tea candle every day until Rwanda is sorted out, and I won't stop lighting them. I mean it! So I hope they take that a warning. A warning that humanity is listening and sometimes remembering stuff; and you can't extinguish my candle of humanity! Especially since I'm in London.

  • there's also a [very] good film about what happened in Rwanda called Hotel Rwanda. I had the opportunity to watch this film in my freshman World Studies class three years ago and I was extremely moved by it.

  • LOL oh man LOL

  • you can have a BG (battle group) within an alliance

  • The reason I love your channel is because you and Hank can believe in and address topics that matter to you in such a moving way. It always makes me tear up when you talk about "us," being one with each other and all. :) Thank you.

  • I don't get how a candle solves or helps any cause. That is unless some place needs light to see. This action thing of lighting a candle is more harmful than good because it ignores all the other genocide going on in other places and ignores all the past genocide as if rwanda is the only place this has ever happened to or in. So I don't see how lighting a candle does anything to help the situation.

  • i want some one to do a nerdfighter meeting in england but i live in beverley (still in england) whih is far away from london and manchester

  • Always nice to see you get serious. Rock on!

  • This guy is more funny than his brother (if he is his real brother).

  • When you said that part about US UN and everyone else ignoring the people of Rwanda.. I almost cried.

  • Comment removed

  • Have a guess at how many people hate you for wishing that everyone somwbody knew died. Did you guess every non insane, and probably most insane, people in the world then well done. You were right. Learn to spell and get off our screens and comment sections you horrific excuse for... I don't even think i can bring myself to call you a human being.

  • You are for genocide? That. is. not. okay.

  • shave off the bottom billion or so stupid people?

    ok, yer first in line

  • I completely agree. I was scared I was the only one who thought that.

  • This is a fairly weighty subject, but I am glad y'all called attention to it. I think a lot of us, whom have lived long enough to remember when this happened, still think about and remember this deplorable event.

I know that I still do. Thanks again.

  • Is it too late for this?

Man, I wish I could have seen you guys in Amsterdam. xD

  • I dont have a camera but I'll think of Rwanda every time I light a Candle

  • i did a project on this and i learned alot. and i also saw the movie hotel rwanda. and i learned that 800,000 people (innocent) were killed in the time span of 100 days. and much more.

  • wow man, even if your life isnt so great, you dont have to be an asshole about it.

  • UNICORNS ROCK!

  • I wish I could send a video, but I don't have any way to record and upload it. :(

  • my sister just read a book about the genocide in Rwanda for her Africa Class.

  • 220 video responses so far! that makes me happy... keep it up, guys.

  • Opposed to genocide? HA! I'm FOR it! lol jkjkjk that's horrible

  • you shouldn't joke about genocide.

    its like joking about rape.

  • Yup that's what they all say; yet everyone seems to joke about horrible things anyway. Hm

  • I think it's better to joke about these things, then to ignore them, or always take them seriously, then things just get depressing.

Obviously they are serious issues, but if I hear a good joke about rape or genocide, I'm going to laugh. Because it is only a joke after all.

  • Aot of people are in the Dark. They don't have a clue about what going on in the world. God has given men alot of powers within themselve to fight Evil unfortunately alot of people choose not to destroy Evil tendencies within themselve as a result Evil grow and infect them all. We must learn not to become like them. The Evil alway start from within and then spread and consequently all their people suffer because they allow Evil to Grow. Get out the Dark.

  • Man creates both 'god' and 'satan' in his own image.

  • I don't get why people are ragging on this so much. If it matters to you so much, why are you on youtube when you could be doing something way more useful? Also, I think that if people can't afford to donate or aren't old enough to volunteer or whatever, this is something simple that people can do to show that we care. I really don't see the use in complaining here when, even if we're can't teleport to Rwanda and help out immediately, this simple little thing is showing that we give a crap.

  • When's the deadline for this?

  • The 22nd at midnight, I believe.

  • rwanda is best forgotten because if you don't remember it, it happens because of misunderstandings and jealousy and selfishness inherent in humans and if you do remember, the same damn thing happens. life is shit city. oh i wish the courage to self terminate!!!!!!!!!

  • There is a rather famous saying: those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I know it's not easy to remember these things, it's not easy to learn about, and you don't want to know that things like this can happen. But they can happen. The people in this video are trying to do a good thing and remember these people and give hope, and there is nothing wrong with that. It's fine for you to have your opinions, and I mean no offense, but there is no need to be so negative.

  • I just learned about Rwanda in my Global Perspective class

  • lighten up, fucker

  • Nope. They are us.

  • whos heard of invisible children?

  • I have. This speaker from there came to my school.

  • stop drunk commenting, MOM. geez!

  • "Don't use a television remote control, use an actual candle". Yeah, because the candle is going to have SO MUCH more of an impact on problems in Rwande.

  • How about doing something that is actually beneficial to these people. Does anyone know of groups that send supplies of seeds, medical supplies, or volunteers to these impoverished people. Is it safe for western volunteers to even enter Ruwanda? I seriously doubt the Ruwandans who were the victim's of a genocidal campaign are going to be looking at Youtube's streaming video. But it is a nice gesture and it does raise awareness. We could make some lasting friends in that part of the world.

  • Directfire, let us know if you can identify an honest organization that does good work in these third world countries that are going through so much of hardship.. You know, we in the west can easily afford to send $5 from each weeks paycheck. . Most people will contribute as long as the money is spent well.

  • That's just it, most of what people donate goes in some fat cat's pocket, as the people who work for or run charieties want paid also.

As for these guys, seems funny Rwanada has been going on for a long timr & they are just now getting around to mentioning it ? Pathetic to use the grief of others for publicity, low even.

  • mars in mortii ma-tii

  • I heard the maker of this video is a convicted pedophile. Is that true?

  • you're just saying that because he looks like your daddy

  • For people against the candles: it's an act to show people that we care and are going to help - that they have support, and that it's not their problem, it's the world's problem.

There's a great value in a small thing - or when a community collectively responds - that has a great effect on people. It may not be objective or scientifically provable, but it's there. People in Rwanda will actually see us showing our support. Of course we have to take political action, but it starts somewhere small

  • Wow... the comments here are horrible, save a few. I would have thought people - especially on a Nerdfighter/vlogbrother video - would be more concerned and intelligent, and caring for the world which we all live on.... It's hard to believe people can be so selfish and animalistic, caring only for themselves ans seeing the world with such warped values. I'm all for diversity of opinions, which is essential to social (and any) progress, but people have to think complexly about these problems...

  • instead of everyone light stupid ass candles why dont you get out and do something about whats going on there

  • Why is this liberal, left-wing freak so concerned about saving Africa when Africa refuses to save itself?

  • These comments....wow.

  • BUT IF I CARE REALIE RALIE HARD JESUS AND HIS SUPER FRIENDS WILL SAVE ALL THE AFRACANS RITE?

Really, all you're doing is lighting a stick made of wax. You want to do something that might actually help? Go out there and actually do something

  • i'm pissing on a daisy for rwanda. oh wait, that didn't do shit neither.

  • Nice vid

  • you're a bamf dude; props.

  • here is Africa defined in Webster's Dictionary: the most cursed continent in the world.

  • Fuck Rwanda

  • DFTBaL

  • YEESSSS, that's the solution for this political problem -> LIGHTING A CANDLE!!!! Honestly, what kind of ignorant person are you?

  • Yeah lighting candles will solve all the world's problems, especially past ones. How the fuck didn't I think of this?

Let's drive around the block for global warming next.

  • ne diyo bu adam yavvv

  • what about the genocide in Kijuju?

  • do u have your name sketched in ur underwears?

  • he's trying to raise awareness you dumb fuck!!! Seriously you are so fucking stupid do you care about those people who died!!! You dumb peice of shit you should go and die!!!

  • It's because of people like you that atrocities like the one in Rwanda occur on the scale they do - complete and utter apathy and concern in human life. We're not stopping a problem - we're becoming aware of it and making others aware of it. And that's the first step to solving any problem.

However, it is quiet clear that the comment I am responding to was written by a troll, so, in troll terms, "Urgh, largh, ugh, urgh, guuh?"

  • good point, you are very wise

  • You're not 26.

  • Thanks for posting!

  • Wooow.

We just started studying Rwanda in my geography class and then there's a video on it.

    Cool.

  • hey, i'm from rwanda and i do appreciate wat ur doing, i was there during the genocide and its nice to see someone cares,

    lukn forward to your video's

    God bless!!!!

  • No, the world has not forgotten and I should also mention that shows such as, "The Long Way Down" still try to shed light on what happened in Rwanda. The genocide is still taught about in schools as well.

  • americans IDIOTS STUPID SUCKER AQUI E BRASIL

  • Scrubberrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • Promoted video....Time for subscriptions to go up up up

  • No worthless candle.

But I do mourn and speak againsthe genocide.

  • congrats for reaching the promoted vids!

  • Great, vid, and its funny to me how blissfully unaware and denying people are of the concept of Genocide, thank-you.

  • Rock on, John. Thanks for helping to putt his together. I have always been amazed (since it came to my attention after the fact) how we in the US had virtually NO idea the genocide was going on.

    Thanks,

    ~Trav

  • If i light a candle and burn my house down i can't help anyone. Wtf man. You're encouraging candle related suicides!

I'm respectfully going to align with the smokey the bear alliance to thwart your plan if only purely for safety reasons sir.

  • Candle related suicides, lol, my gut burst...

  • how is this gonna stop genocide

  • The idea is not to stop genocide. The idea is to tell the survivors watching the video that we in the developed world have not forgotten what happened in Rwanda. (We asked Rwandans how we could help; this is what they suggested.) -John

  • o fuk

  • I would light a candle if i was allowed to put videos up.

I have a question, what dod you do when your boyfriend wants to break-up with you, then doesn't when you convince him not to and then says its hard being with you a month later?

Oh and is it ok if I get a used copy of paper towns?

  • Btw we are both nerds, I'm a book nerd and he's a music nerd. our six month anniversary is in a week.

  • It's so easy to offer a view on Facebook, reduced so eloquently by most to an insult. And in a world where "reality" has been limited to "tv viewing" and "cyber-anything", I'm amused that there are so many opinionated people out there.

Sorry folks, but if you've never had a passport or traveled outside your country of origin, and you're not educated, before posting anything, ask yourself: "Why does my opinion matter?

Free speech might be a right, but it isn't absolute. Try listening.

  • I did try to listen. The style, framing and topic are hackneyed. This is not the voice of callousness. This is the voice of 'enough is enough'. Leave those people be to sort their own affairs. Western do good'ers have spent decades trying to help these failed nations and honestly we just make it consistently worse and prolong the agony. It's time for us to stop thinking that we have to fix everything when it is apparently that nature is a stronger force and it needs to find it's own path.

  • Nature is a stronger force? Imagine if we'd allowed "Nature is a stronger force" to keep us from entering a war with Germany in 1941!

  • I'm sorry sir but you have an empty analogy. Nature is the life force of the people. I've spent decades watching the trials and tribulations of the peoples in Africa. Most of these countries just can not get it together. To make a long story short I believe they can't get it together because they have no long term abilities. They don't cooperate with long term thinking anywhere near the extent you see in most other cultures. This is an innate missing component, don't ask me why. I wish I knew.

  • That's because they're more likely to get killed before they turn twenty, either from disease or war, and they know it.

  • Sounds like you aren't very bright if you spent decades studying this and still have no solutions...

  • I'd like to see you on that case.

Try and cope with the brutal death of 800 000 people. You'd die before enduring 1/1000th of what General Dallaire went through.

  • What does that have to do with what KMG501 was talking about???

And Dallaire's not the hero you think he is...read McKenzie's analysis of his leadership...

  • I will say that nothing is that singular. Sorry kmg, but is just isn't as simple as you say.

  • yeah people want to help. but they are not willing to do what's necessary.

  • Listen, I feel before we go off and help any other country or its people, we should take care of ours. As long as there are people who sleep in the streets, homeless, hungry and hurt, fuck the world and worry about home first. I understand your video, everyone is equal and what happened was wrong. But we need help too.

  • Then US need help? gimme a break.

  • They have no long view. They don't have the same level of ability of cooperation that other people/cultures have. When you take a very long and hard look at Africans, these truths become undeniable. Africans just never reached the same plateau that most other humans have reached. Now I of course realize that most politically correct people will say that such sentiments are racist and other nasty things. But it's just the plain hard and sad truth. I wish it were not so but it is. Best wishes.

  • I'm sorry, but this stuttering video style that is so popular these days is lousy. I don't wish the people of Rwanda anything but the best but lets face reality please. Africa is full of failed and backward nations. Have you ever stopped to think about why that is? It's not because of foreigners, it's not because of imperialism, it's not because of racism. It's because in spite of Africa being the birth place of humanity. Africans never matured like most other people and cultures. CONTINUED

  • Africa is a fail state, we should still be ruling them and save them from them selfs

  • It's are fault for their poverty to begin with. If anything We should be giving back to them for how much they've given us.

  • Really? africa is living in the past, we give them technology and a bright future, then we leave(whites) and all hell breaks loose. because they returned to there old wars over relgion and tribal land.

  • What technology have we left them? Picks to dig mines for diamonds? What we left them were countries that divided tribes and families. That's why there are wars today. Just because we left them with technology doesn't mean we helped them. We have to educate them about the technology so that they can help themselves. If you went back in time and gave de vinci a modern plane and asked him to rebuild one just like that with out our help, do you really think he would be able to do it?

  • And what bright future are you talking about. We sucked them dry of every natural resource, and said, "Well we kinda figured we were wrong on the whole enslaving thing so we'll just leave you now." They have no way economic growth! thats why they returned to "the old wars" is because in order to get what was needed you went to war, just now they have better technology, which we left them with, instead of spears. How many more people do you think they were able to kill with guns instead of spears?

  • Not to be mean, but your glasses make your head look like it gets smaller around the lenses :D

  • All glasses do that and you only notice that after almost a quarter century?

To use your own words... not to be mean... but you are some major dumbass....sigh

  • man you speak to fast please put subtitles!!

  • I think at the stroke of midnigt Nov 5, 2009 worldwide we should all gather in front of our government offices and light a candle in memory of those dieing or dead because of the New World Order. All the wars we have are instigated and supported by the same people. Poverty, corruption, pain and suffering, and death. Who has not had an injustice done to them? We could end this suffering by coming together worldwide to mourn and be a beacon of hope so that good people everywhere will join as one.

  • Fuck you buddy, what have you ever done to ever change any thing? Support what? Unless you have pulled military duty, don´t hide behind your f attention whore hits on you tube. You disgust me and probably the rest of your country. I won´t call you poser because you stand for nothing. Spineless waste of a good trailer trash jackoff!
