it's too bad most of the people who say federer is better than sampras haven't watched the 90's thru 2000, probably because they are still kids in that era.but i am not saying that federer is not the greatest. the era of thes two is very competitive, sampras on his way to his very 1st grandslam defeated the games greats.sampras a true class tenis player, no fancy outfits no bad temper. for me sampras will always be the best!!!
he hadnt won a slam in two years, dropping his ranking abit, sum ppl assumed it was from him getting married but he said he wanted to prove them wrong, which is when he won the 02 USO
amazing match the way sampras play this he most win the us open 2001, but in this tournament Lleyton hewiit destroy sampras in the final and kafelnikov in the semis playing his best tennis until now
Wait a minute, you're saying that the only reason Pete beat Andre (in the 2000s) is because of his amazing serve? I beg to differ. Andre had the greatest return ever. Contrary to the 90s, when he was able to outplay Andre from the baseline, in the 2000s he had to come into the net alot more often and finish the point quickly because Serve and Volley (which is what he did in his prime) is MUCH more taxing on the body than the agressive baseline style of play. Both are great players.
Of course it is, you will see people come to the net to finish the point quicker in fatigued situations. Look at some S&V players, they weren't the fittest and most mobile.
serve and volley is more taxing in terms of stress/injury to the body because of the extreme angles you have to cover. Baseline game is more taxing in terms of endurance, but lateral movement is much easier on the body.
I disagree, coming in to the net on almost every service point as well as chipping and charging is pretty damn grueling. Next time you're on the tennis court try coming into the net on every point and then tell me which type of play is more taxing.
Loved the Sampras/Agassi rivalry--but Agassi was CLEARLY the better player in the 2000's...the ONLY reason Pete beat Andre at the Open in 2001 and 2002 was b/c he won alot of cheap points on that massive serve of his...If not for that, Andre would've beaten him both times
Gosh I just realised Sampras had to battle so hard mentally to be where he was. The scoreboard popped up and Agassi was the no.2 seed and Sampras 11th. That was so unusual. It was normally the opposite.
Sampras WAS over the hill by 2001. On most of these serves he doesn't even get into the service box by the time the return is to him- he had pretty severe back problems post 1999 and his game changed quite a bit. Watch him in 1995 and compare. Very different player, physically declined but mentally strong as ever.
I agree. In my opinion he missed out on an opportunity to be no.1 again in 1999 otherwise he would have held on to the no.1 ranking for 7 consecutive years. He was on a hot streak in 1999 until he had a disc problem on his back.
Ever since he relied heavily on his serve especially those second serves. Alot of players just have no say and Sampras either wins it or loses it on his own terms. His mental concentration is also a big part of his game. He does so well under pressure.
I was going to say that Agassi makes anyone look slow because he takes the ball so early. But starting in 2000 he won only 3 titles (two being Grand Slams) and had a losing record on clay. He couldn't train properly.
One of the best matches ever played between two of the best players to play the sport.
When people say Sampras was washed up when he lost to Roger at the 2001 Wimbledon, they need to watch this match. Pete went downhill in 2002 (before the Open) but could still play at the highest level in 01 like he showed at this tournament...beating Rafter, Agassi and Safin in a row to make the finals.
Yep especially because uve got the big serving net rusher and u got the big returning agressive baseliner so its the only true hard court match that showed both types of great hard court players. It had all the shots
damn!!!2 best players!! classis rivalry.

great match, although Agassi is my favorite player, i'm glad that Sampras took it and not anyone else.

@4.32 Sampras Volley winner. this is the best Rally ever! Only Federer can compete with this.1,2,3 right here Agassi Sampras Federer.
jonnybgood88 3 years ago
Even though this match took place in 2001, it was by far the best match of the 90's generation. 2000's would have to be Safin Federer AO 2005.

a 4-sets match with no breaks? 4 tie-breakers? if tennis could make an exception for one match this should have been a draw!
what a match

I think many would agree that "agressive baseline" play is much more taxing than serving and volleying (considering that pete was exceptional at it)

Its a pity that this was 2001. Sampras would have gone on to win this had this been earlier; the title i mean.

LoL, how is that cheap? Thats pretty much always been his edge on agassi, though his ground and volley game did diminish a little by 2000.

Best game may have been Safin-Federer Semifinal game of 05. This was without a question the best game between these two!
