It is so sad, and a reflection of how messed up the U.S. has become that this young woman's simple lovely music causes hatred. The flag in the background is a symbol of pride. That's all. It isn't a KKK flag. Lot's of young southern boys fought and died for the south. They were defeated. Killed and maimed. Leave it alone... the Japanese are just trying to show their admiratioin for the U.S. I love this young woman... and I love the Japanese too.
I'm the bass player in this video and I've been in the band for a little over three years now. The flag was hung over the stage when we got to the gig and anyone who's been to Japan knows the Japanese are the kindest, most honest people you can meet. They definitely don't look at this flag from a racial perspective...they associate the flag with Southern History and Culture which has had a profound effect on not only Bluegrass and Old Time Music, but Blues, Jazz, and Country Music as well.
Love the music, and the brilliant young girl playing the mandolin. A pity she's put in front of the favorite flag of inbred bigots, cousin humping racists, and traitors.
@slownoman WOW you must be a yankee. It is pitiful that you're so sheltered and ignorant. Maybe if you come down South to God's country we can educate you on what real respect is and the real reason for the stars and bars!!!
HMM -- It's pretty possible that the flag is a decoration that the Japanese hosts put up without knowing about all the baggage that it carries, and just thinking that it would be appropriate for Southern / Country music. (And I'm not saying anything either way about the topic.)
I've traveled and played music in Japan and it's really amazing and heartening and sweet, how appreciate the Japanese are of music and of the artists who go there to play. & I'm glad that they got to experience Sierra!
I was born in the South in 1947. I remember how we treated Black people back then. Just like any tribe since the dawn of humanity, we treated Those Others with contempt. Most White people down here would still be doing so if they could get away with it.
We also have a mean frat-boy culture. It's the combination of wild celtic origins with too many generations of rural life. I see nothing to be proud of in the South except our tradition of good manners. Will the Confederate flag stand for that?
@trisoctehedron Your comment about the "wild celtic origins" of southern culture being responsible for the racist attitudes of its inhabitants is reminiscent of the very worst kind of w.a.s.p.ish anti Irish bigotry where the celts are portrayed as savages to be tamed by their "civilised" colonialist overlords. It may be just me but..having viewed your channel, I also find your pre-occupation with teenage girls youtube postings rather unsettling...
@BrianJacksonTrad You might find this book informative. It impressed me greatly when I read it. It was by an academic expert, and apparently had been thoroughly researched: "Cracker Culture: Celtic Ways in the Old South", by Grady McWhiney, (Univ. of Alabama Press 1988). This book told me much about the differences between the US North and South. Since I am from the South, and am of celtic origin, I found it particularly interesting.
And here's one that is a record of a journey in the South in the 1930s by a Northerner who later designed New York City's Central Park. Though he was continually amazed at the way the Southern folk lived (excluding slave owners, whom he didn't visit much), I sensed that he was trying honestly to understand them. The book left a profound impression on me:
" A Journey in the Seaboard Slave States", by Frederick Law Olmsted, (1856). ??? pgs. New York: ? (SC)
@trisoctehedron Your ability to list book titles and their authors does not qualify your (monumentally ignorant) remark attributing the racism inherent in dixie to the celtic origins of its inhabitants. Racism is and was a tool of the ruling classes, a necessary counterpart to slavery, nothing more or less. Your own ethnic origins are irrelevant. I suggest you limit your future commentaries to the bedroom antics of pubescent girls, a subject on which you appear to be disturbingly well versed.
@BrianJacksonTrad Reread my original comment. Paragraph one mentioned the historic racism of the South and how it is a manifestation of the xenophobia that history shows has been part of human nature always.
Paragraph 2 introduced a NEW subject , our "mean frat-boy culture". It was that which I attributed to celtic origins. There's no space here to go what I mean by "frat -boy culture", but I will do so upon request.
It's so important to read a post carefully before attempting to refute it!
@trisoctehedron Having reread, I am even more disgusted by your hypocrisy than by your ignorance. In paragraph 1. you are the champion of racial equality In 2. you are denigrating the celtic race as wild and uncivilised. Furthermore, your "good manners" are a thin veneer over your predatory obsession with juvenile females, who may be impressed by such hackneyed sophistries as your attempted rebuttals employ. I suggest you seek counselling .
@trisoctehedron If you don't like living in the land of cotton carry your hide up North. Furthermore, you probably are a yankee and not even born in the South. No one talks about their motherland with such malice.
@trisoctehedron I was born and raised here. I happened to have an immigrant mother, which allowed my to see Southern society from a bit of a distance. That puts it in perspective. I don't like what I see when I see Southern life whole.
It's people like the ones complaining about the confederate flag that made it mean something more than a confederate flag. It was not designed to represent anything more than the southern states. If it offends you, it's because you want it to. So shut the hell up about the flag. Everyone else has moved on since slavery and civil rights violations, I suggest you all do the same.
micmac...I am American, and let me say this...we have alot of ignorant dumbasses here...these are the same morons who voted george bush in twice..or shall I say let him steal it twice...BTW my wife is half French, I love you guys
@TheSteverino1 Yeah your not singing that tune now. All your Obama can do is point his little skinning ass finger. Putting blame on Bush. When the blame is his own. It was the C I A , Bush ,and our Navy Seals using Info. from Water boarding. That lead to Bin Laden's deaf. Your so call Obama, ruled the use of Water Boarding cruel, and against the law. Put the C I A, and the people who used it to get Info. up on charges. Then turned around and use that Info, and still as them charges against them
I don't care about the damn flag, I care about Sierra's talent and her good looks , I just hope she doesn't turn out to be a dime-a dozen( fake blond} like so many do.
I am a French Canadian ,I know about the American civil war but still don't understand how people of one country can turn against each other.
P.S- my English self taught so please ignore any spelling mistake....
@K31swiss You are absolutely right about defending your homeland ,but it's not because I'm French that I don't understand, it,s because I know nothing about the American civil war.
You are not very nice to imply that I,m stupid because I,m French.
I think that I will do some research on the American civil war just educate myself on that subject.
what in the world was going on in the background!?! Great job Sierra. Beautiful as ever! and I wouldn't have even paid attention to the flag if it hadnt been mentioned. Get over it already! It's been centuries! Jeeeeesh.
oh for goodness sakes, just get over the flag ,everybody dont feel any thing bad about the flag,I dont and I am from the south,I dont like it because of race.
Nice music, but playing underneath the dispicable confederate flag is a terrible mistake. People in the South need to accept that they fought for an unjust cause and that they were defeated. The North won the Civil war an we need to unite and move on.

Confederate Flag in this context is representing Southern Heritage not Slavery, the KKK, or any other things this flag has been mistreated for.
