The other thing was that the remote detonator was destroyed. The one he had in his hand was directly connected to the explosives by a short wire.

At this point, they already lost a soldier or two, others were injured including a civilian. They were trying to repel them down the side of the bridge but they were closing too fast. The remote detonator was destroyed, their last chance. It would take too long to move you and you risk others to do so. Would you die to save several others, then?

Between this scene, the kids dad getting shot and dying are the sadest parts of the movie. My girlfriend started crying and it was emotional for me too because her brother was a Marine and he did the same thing to save his men. This movie was EPIC with the right kind of emotion in it.
