I suppose it's the next best thing to ending up not getting to actually go to Japan over this past spring break... wow... I should be in Japan right now... wtf... DX
I have been considering traveling to Japan but I get some conflicting views about Japan and the Japanese culture. Japan seems to be very hostel towards foreigners as what friends have told me who have visited there. Many people refuse service and always give you funny looks. Even when you try to be friendly. Yet at these festivals the Japanese seem friendly and outgoing? It appears to be a double standard and are they putting up a front? Am I just misinformed or is there some truth to this?
No idea. But all the friends I have who went there have been welcomed. It might depend on where you go, and what sort of gestures you present towards the Japanese.
everyone i met in japan was very kind. some people are shy though. it helps to have a japanese friend with you to help with purchases, but you get the gist of the language eventually. like on trains, say sumimasen or gomenasai when you bump into someone.look around and do what they do. dont be loud or obnoxious. you can look up japanese etiquette. its mostly places where they arent used to tourists they MAY look at you strangly.
I have a question. I always get some conflicting issues regarding Japan and Japanese culture. I had been considering going to Japan but have heard Japan is not very welcoming of foreigners. I of coarse have great respect and interest but the atmosphere does seem very hostel towards outsiders. Although it confuses me by these festivals as it seems Japanese are very friendly and outgoing. Is this something unique to Japan and would I better off staying stateside? Would I be welcom at this event?
This festival isn't made for japanese, kit is made for us. They know this stuff becuase it is their culture...they are trying to share it ith us. Japan, is known to be very polite to foriegners and looks are mostly becuase of curiousty. Japan is a homegenous country. There is 98% japanese and 2% is mostly koreans. If you are respectful and open-minded there should be nothing to worry about..
Can't wait to finally go again after 7 years! I couldn't make it last year because of a competition, but I definitely can't wait for this upcoming festival. Hope the weather will be good.
