I love this game and my old Game boy! It still works even after 23 years... testament to Japanese ingenuity. This was advanced technology back then. First Game boy was introduced in 1989 and already it had polyphonic stereo sound (I think 8 voices simultaneously were possible). Not all of the games were that good but some like Zelda were brilliant and gameplay was superior to most games nowadays. Too much violence in the games today... I miss Super Mario.
can someone help me when i try to play on the legend of zelda links awakening it breaks, i can see the people but not the background or floor if someone can give me an easy fix that would be great.
I forgot how beautiful this game's music was, considering that it was barely a couple steps above MIDI tracks, that just makes it all the better. A real testament to the artists and masterminds who were in this stuff and their insane long-lost powers of mood-story-gameplay alchemy
I became the Ultimate Master Overlord of the universe when, after the 4th playthrough, I finally managed to beat this game (DX) with no game overs, fairies, or resets.
i feel bad for kids these days. magic like this isn't found in games today. for some reason playing this as a kid in the summer just filled me with so much hope, so much wonder. this game really is so inspiring, and i think the soundtrack and storyline is largely because of that, among others. take me back to the good ol' chiptune days...
@sonicmario64 I don't know so much about that. This will always be the first and best Legend of Zelda game I ever played. I've enjoyed others, but not even Ocarina of Time comes quite close enough to this game to beat it in my mind.
Out of everyone I know, I'm probably the only Legend of Zelda fan, people know what it is but they think Zelda is the main character. -_- Trying to correct them would be a waste of my time and breath.
I remember being about 12 years old and DYING to get my hands on this beauty. Shortly after finishing Zelda for the SNES in 1993, my parents bought the almighty Game Boy (came with Tetris I think?) and then this game, Link's Awakening. I still to this day get all fuzzy inside just at the thought of scaling Tal Tal Moutain. This game had incredible atmostphere despite the fact that it wasn't in color. I could not believe how on par this game was with A Link to the Past. Greatest Gameboy Game EVER
To this day, I can still remember what my brother said when we barged into the local shop to buy this game: "Do you have Zelda - Link's A-WELL-KING?!"
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Don't you think that the NES zelda game is piece of crap compared to this? Game boy rocks!!! I mean in the NES game nobody even talks to you and there's no story or anything!
The original version is by far the hardest. The story was explained in the manual, as well as the title screen. But anyway, anyone who's been to the 9th Dungeon knows the meaning of pain
I played almost every Zelda but the atmosphere of this one is so f*** great...its the best one of all -naaa..maybe ocarina of time is better ^^ when i helped the ghost find his home was the first time a tear runs down cause of a video game...and great wonderful music.
I'm of a mind that they're both pretty near each other in the timeline as well, It'll be proven if we find link with a crashed ship in the new Train game
I love that music. Companies nowadays want to make their games more realistic, better graphics, better sound etc etc. But i love that crappy sound, its beautiful. It takes me back to a simpler time.....[drifts away]......
This game will take you 3 months to finish if it's your first time playing and you don't have friends or the internet to help you... TRUST me... took me about half a year when i was a kid
@microblan Seriously I never finished this game til I got the internet. I got it way back when it first came out and I couldn't solve the last puzzle in the last dungeon where you need to go a certain direction in the crossroads.
@kinneas The directions in the crossroads in the last dungeon are given in the small house next to the 2 kids throwing a ball to each other. in the bottom right corner ( i think ) is a book called something like "dark secrets of this island" and you need the magnifying glass to read it.
you get the class by completing the trade routes through-out the whole game and then that book gives you the way you need in the last dungeon
@microblan same here.. probably longer. I remember it took me TOO long to figure out I needed to push those urchins with my shield to get to the sword at the very beginning.. heh.
@microblan Yeah back in those days it was frustrating to be stuck on a game. No internet, no strategy guide, no one to help you. But at the same time when you did finally beat it, you felt more satisfied and fulfilled. Unlike today's games where the walkthrough/strategy guide/ cheats are already out before the game even goes on sale.
@Aphexwolf Or you could call Nintendo's 900 number and talk to a game counselor. xD
They had an automated line too. It was really stupid, though, because usually you'd have really specific questions about a game that the recording never answered.
I remember one time I wanted to figure out how to get hadouken on Mega Man X but my mom wouldn't let me call the 900 number. I called the 800 customer service line instead and suckered the rep into reading me the explanation from Nintendo Power. xD
@Aphexwolf I 100% agree. Lol, I played this game when I could barely read, which made it like 40x harder. They never really told you what you had to do..
@microblan for some reason I was able to get all the instruments but the 6th until I found out you needed to put a bomb on the wall with no cracks lol... talk about a major secret. BUT I BEAT IT AFTER 8 MONTHS OF HARD WORK!!!
The only way to fix this problem is to open the gam cartridge and replace the battery. It will require a special screw driver bit, a same type battery, solder (and iron), wire, and a file. The original batteries are electricly spot welded to the metal brace, so you have to remove the whole brace, rough up the new battery a little, solder wires to it, and solder them back to the cartridge board. Just make sure you get the polarity right!
Nintendo games are like Lps, you have to listen to their music carefully to hear its great quality. I still trying to complete my collection of NES but not close. 125 games own out of 1,700 I think, Not sure how many came out
Yea it's over 10 years old. I actually have the original copy of the game. In fact I never even beat it. I always thought it was just a half-assed game.

I whas forsed to learn english to play this game (my first rpg) i din't know how to get the sword, finally i found how (6 months later) use shield to push the spike creature XD, never less took me years to finish the game, i never quited, great game. I finished it like 10 time geting all hearths and like 28 seashells each time.
This was my favorite for many years, I remember getting stuck after the second level and not figuring out how to advance further for about 3 or 4 years after, I'd still come and explore the places I'd already been hehe, ace.
I thought he was gonna get nailed by that spinning sun thing at 8:17. sheesh, speed runs always amaze me. Not that this one is that difficult, but still.
yep, my favorite gameboy game...and it took quite long for me to finish it (the first time xD)...but maaaan, 1993...that many years have passed?? jeeez...like it was yesterday...unbelievable... :-)
lol its for trading items with other u start off with a boy then u swap like loooads of items around the whole game and get a secret gift at the end i dont wanna spoil ;) so beat the game again
The funny part is the whole argument is compounded by Miyamoto himself calling it "role-playing". He may have a different subjective definition of it, but doesn't he get first-say?
This man was one of my all-time favorites from when I was a boy! I played it for months mastering it and finding all the secrets. This game will always be one of my special favorites.
I have played and beaten every single Zelda game to date, but this game will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart as my personal favorite. I played both the original and color versions, and I loved the music from the first time I heard it.
And the addition of the Southern Face Shrine theme in this video is awesome. I especially LOVED that song.
I had this game, when it first came out, its really awesome . The music was not so bad either. its was one of the hardest Zelda games, for game boy that is. Thanks for uploading this, im gonna download this game right now lol : )

Unforgettable... I can still play it on the computer but the felling of a gameboy in your hands is irreplaceable. Wish I still had it.

I loved this music! This and Super Mario Land, the tunes are just incredible.
Beepboopboopboopybeepybeeeeeeep! HAAAH YAAAH HUUK HUKK HAAAH YYAAAKH!
This game was sweet.
SO glad I had the DX version though! That was in colour, AND Link got special tunics at the end if you ripped up some boss quest.
Um, also, YOU COULD STEAL THINGS FROM THE STORE! IS THAT NOT INCREDIBLE?

Granted, since it's a GB title, it's maybe not an aural delight, but hey, it's a Zelda game, so it gets a special pass.
Trust me, today's entry will make up for it. It does for me anyway.

Black and white Zelda goodness. Although the music is like nails on a chalkboard sometimes.
