Hi Dave! I've been trying to get in touch with you about them P13's you make (now I'm also interested in the cc90...) but with no luck. Is the e-mail on your home page correct?
Why not use alnico 3? The early 50s P90s were alnico 3 and I never understood why everyone uses alnico 2 when trying to reproduce them. Alnico 3 has a very different midrange and attack. Also, why not use Casino pickup covers if you want the metal-cover sound?
should have known Dave -thank you -we actually play a Goree song"rock awhile"-any thoughts on the harmony reissue h62 p13s-also who is the music at the beginning of the zephyr blues pickup video? thanks
I've not seen the new Harmony P13 reissues but I'd bet money they just ordinary P90s, they have to be. Why? P13's are not factory production friendly and would be horribly expensive to reproduce in modern times. They use paper bobbins and a steel machined core. I'm sure the Harmony's are made in Korea, so all they did was make a look alike cover and put a P90 in it. If the cover is the same size as vintage I can build real P13's into it.
Hi Dave- Can you tell me who the music is at the end of this video?-old T-Bone? Freddy? Lowell fuson?-also, have one of the harmony H62 reissues-have you played one of these and what do you think of the reissue P13's?
Hi Dave-can you please tell me who the music is at the end of this video-Early t-bone? Freddy? Lowell fulson? i would like to find it -Also i have one of the Harmony H62 reissues-I wondered if you have played one of them and what do you think of those reissue P13's?
Goree Carter. He was an early follower of TBoneWalker's and was kind of a "TBone clone." I dont think you can buy his albums in the US, I had to buy from a French company. Google his name and you'll probably find where you can get his albums, I think there are only two collections of his stuff.
I may be wrong here, but isn't that the 'Bump' p-13 you're playing on? If so, weren't those constructed with an alnico 'rail' design versus the steel pole of the adjustable pole-piece p-13?
Also, I do think your pickups sound very good. I've just begun winding my own (mostly for financial reasons) and I appreciate the information you've provided through your videos and designs.
Yes you're wrong. That IS a pole piece P13, same as my own version, both are constructed with a solid steel core which the coil is wound upon. Yes the "bump" version has an alnico bar magnet as the pole, I have one of those too :-) They sound completely different...
thanks, well yes I do a similar pickup to the Stratotone pickup you're talking about, but mine is built into a humbucker cover and is wound hotter, visit my website and find the Dirty Harry pickups in my Specialty Pickups section.
I was lucky enough to find one of these and man they are awsome. I never thought anybody could replicate that sound, but your reissue sounds as good and to me even better since mine is a little weak. Do you make reissues of the dearmond "hershey bar" pickup? I got one of those, but somebody buthcered it and stuck it in a teisco!
Great sound,Dave! The P-13 sounds really cool The point here is I think that I have owned several Silvertone and Harmony archtops with P-13 pickups in the past. And none of them had circuits or tonepots that let me dial in as much treble and punch as I hear in your demo. They were all on the bassy side with thick velvet highs very much like Charlie Christian. I think the old P-13 sound had also a lot to do with the old style circuits and pots. And the wood of the guitar ofcourse to some extend.
Sounds fine, but what i really dig is the sound on the goree carter recording heard at the end of this video. (I think i emailed you before about the difference of old recordings and how to get that sound and this is a perfect example of what i meant)
i have a silvertone 1385 with no pickups and a harmony 1311 someone put humbuckers in and a h60 which has not been messed up sooo im needing 4 p13,s but i want those metal covers ,theres got to be someone out there who can stamp them out for ya ,well im a hopeing ive been waiting for those new harmony to come out just to see if i can get some of theres
Getting custom covers made costs thousands of dollars, sorry. The reissue Harmony's have fake pickups in them, but if you get one most likely I can build one of mine into their covers if they copied the dimensions correctly. I may be doing the P13 with the "knuckle buster" blade in it, this will fit in a humbucker cover...
Thanks, I was really trying to get across that the guitar you put pickups in makes a big difference. I wish I could find nickel silver P90 covers to fit but the only ones out there are dog ear and they are brass, which REALLY dulls a pickup down...
Yes, my website is listed at the end of all my videos.

Man that pickup sounds awesome.
gretscher 3 years ago
Very nice tone indeed.
mightyatomics 3 years ago
Hi Dave, what pickups would you recommend that have the gretsch white/black falcon or black/white penguin tone??
buffelkie 3 years ago
Well those are Filtertons or earlier Dynasonics, I don't make either type as those require more specialized type parts that I can't find.....
SDPickups 3 years ago
Nice sounding pickups. Do you make a Gibson Alnico V Staple Magnet pickup as well?
gretscher 3 years ago
No, it would take thousands of dollars to reproduce the staple pickup, they are a complex design, complex bobbin....

Hearing both pickups in the same guitar, I'd have to retract my earlier comment and say they sound VERY similar.
