BTW...I use an identical tent/ tarp set-up. Using my 1 man tent drops enough weight from a larger to allow the addition of a tarp to my kit. The tarp keeps the sun from overhating the rain fly in the summer. It helps lessen the sound of rain beating on the tent in a storm. It gives me a large shelterd porch in wet/snowy weather and it allows me to use the tent without the fly in hot-humid conditions.

Have you ever seen a fire that's built upside down? It burns hotter and longer. I tried it once and it worked great...basically you put the biggest wood on the bottom and the smallest stuff and kindling on top and it burns down through.

I usually go camping in the Rocky Mtns, but Next weekend plan to take a neice and nephews first time camping in Virginia, but I am not sure of a good location. We want something somewhat secluded that we can drive our cars to, and still be away from other people. Do you have any recomendations?

Awesome campsite area and set-up man. I can tell you have been a backpacker for awhile. Although the site is fairly close to the water it wouldn't be a problem with the insects/mosquitos during late fall, early winter. How far did you have to hike in, to get to the area?

Awesome campsite area and set-up man. I can tell you have been a backpacker for awhile. Although the site is fairly close to the water it wouldn't be a problem with the insects/mosquitos during late fall, early winter. How far did you have to hike in, to get to the area?

Damn, I miss camping in Wash. Lived there for first 14 Yrs of my life dude in small city near Wanatchee. Now Im here in Southern California for the last 16 years and the Camping experience just isnt the same.

I know what DTM's saying with the energy of waterfall or even raing water. Does anyone know the answer to the question - Is there more oxygen in the air when it's humid?

@longslidenyc , Waterfalls, Rivers, Woods, Lightning and the beach all produce negative Ions in the air, and they do cause a sense of well being. Smog and pollution create positive ions which do make people grumpy and moody, some people believe..

Wow...looks like a good time! It's so refreshing to be in nature and really feel so self-reliant...able to survive off the land and build your own shelter. :) So on your camping excursions, do you ever come across some interesting wildlife? I live in South Dakota...so not much for wildlife, however I live near a river and see deer quite often...even here in the city. It's so peaceful and beautiful to watch animals in nature. Have fun on your excursions! I'm jealous to not be able to go with you!

Where is your girlfriend when you are gone like this? I hope she is not stuck in a trailer waiting for you. Seems not very regenerating for her. True spiritual enlightenment would be less of self and more of others.
You should visit some Indians to learn real oneness with nature as you can't bring Wholefoods fruit and call it one with nature. Just seems a bit artificial to me. Learn to live off the land then you will understand her better.

Krista the only people that judge.Are people who never get off their asses and do anything.Just look at people who watch professional sports how they sit in front of T.V.'S for hours cursing and judging people they never met.And pretending that they could do it better themselves.

I sure don't know much about the science of ions but negative ions increase the flow of oxygen in the body which increases a number of things including endurance. Lighting, waterfalls, surf & the forrest all create negative ions.

The water has life in it. At the source it has so much life, enough to be able to expand and feed all the plants and trees in the surrounding area. Whatshisface " greatest day" said a certain amount but i can't remember.
I always get weird dreams when i'm camping. Something aout being so close to the ground and nature. It has a grounding effect on me i suppose.

Dan, you mentioned a small propane stove that you have with you. I have a small tip for you. We always think about weight since everything is on our shoulders. Search youtube for "alcohol stove diy" you will get something like this.
